This 1860 printing is heavily prized by collectors as it represents the final definitive text layout. Darwin personally revised the volume contributing an updated preface and a new postscript dated Feb. 1st 1860 addressing minor textual corrections. Furthermore John Murray intentionally published this milestone edition in the exact same green blind-stamped diagonal-wave-grain cloth style used for On the Origin of Species completing the ultimate pairing for evolutionary biology collectors. Physical Description and Collation Octavo. pp. xv xvi 519 followed by 32 pages of Murray's General List of Works advertisements dated "January 1863" bound at the rear. Complete with the half-title page and 11 fine woodcuts/diagrams integrated within the text block. Publisher's original green diagonal-wave-grain cloth boards symmetrically stamped in blind spine lettered and decorated in bright gilt. Original dark chocolate-brown paper endpapers complete with the highly desirable intact paper binder's ticket of "Bound by Edmonds & Remnants London" cleanly affixed to the rear pastedown. An outstanding premium collector's copy in an exceptionally crisp state of preservation. Binding and Cloth: Exceptional. The cloth retains its rich deep original green color across the boards and spine entirely escaping the heavy sun-bleaching or uniform browning typical of mid-Victorian cloth. The gilt lettering is sharp and intensely bright. Sharp corners and firm spine ends showing only minuscule hints of shelf friction. Hinges and Joints: Structurally flawless. The internal hinges are completely sound uncracked and un-repaired. The text block remains tight square and solid. Interior and Text Block: Remarkably fresh. The leaves are crisp white and exceptionally clean showing far less age-toning or foxing than is normally expected of this vintage. Features an elegant contemporary ink signature on the upper margin of the title page "H. Dickson 1st George Oakridge Toronto" offering a brilliant clean piece of nineteenth-century provenance.
