1839rif. 189181London: Henry Colburn 1839. The Voyage of the Beagle First separate edition of this eyewitness account of one of the most influential expeditions in human history describing what Darwin judged "by far the most important event in my life" and recording the fieldwork that led to the Origin of Species Life and Letters I p. 61. These records are "famous as the genesis of Darwin's theory of evolutionary biology" Hill transforming his horizons from an intended career as a country parson and seeding a determination to establish himself as a gentleman scientist. The Journal known ever since as The Voyage of the Beagle is renowned among Darwin's books as "undoubtedly the most often read and standing second only to On the Origin of Species as the most often printed" p. 31. The Journal was first published early in 1839 as Volume III of the Narrative of the Surveying Voyages of His Majesty's Ships Adventure and Beagle. This separate edition was printed from the same sheets but with two preliminary leaves cancelled and one leaf discarded: the cancelled leaves now credit Darwin's election to the Royal Society which took place after the publication of the Narrative set. 1873rif. 90263New York: D. Appleton & Co 1873. First Edition. First printing. Octavo 20cm. Publisher's terra-cotta cloth with gilt titles on spine; decorative devices stamped in black on upper and lower covers; i-vii; 1-374pp 14pp ads; seven inserted leaves of plates three folding; text illus. Spine ends and board edges a bit rubbed with tiny bit of cloth flaking at base of spine; internally complete and quite fresh the endpapers and hinges clean and strong text firm and unmarked; in all a tight Very Good copy. A key work in Darwin's evolutionary canon originally intended as a section of The Descent of Man but published separately for cost considerations. Darwin's meticulously documented thesis that certain expressions of emotion are if not universal then at least highly correlated across human cultures as well as across animal species has never been seriously challenged. The heliotype plates most of which are printed from original negatives represented an important milestone in scientific book illustration; they were included at considerable expense despite the objections of Darwin's publishers who warned that their inclusion would "poke a terrible hole" in the book's profits. A quite nice copy of a book which while not strictly uncommon is typically found well-worn. D. Appleton & Co unknown

1868rif. 174003London: John Murray 1868. Darwin's earliest use of the phrase "survival of the fittest" First edition first issue of the first of Darwin's works to use the famous evolutionary phrase preceding its appearance in the fifth edition of the Origin of Species by a year. Variation provides a full statement of the facts on which the theories of Origin were based. "Survival of the fittest" was coined by the philosopher and sociologist Herbert Spencer on reading Origin. In the introduction to Variation Darwin notes: "This preservation during the battle for life of varieties which possess any advantage in structure constitution or instinct I have called Natural Selection; and Mr. Herbert Spencer has well expressed the same idea by the Survival of the Fittest" p. 6. Variation represents the first section of Darwin's projected 'big book' on the origin of species of which the Origin itself was an abstract. Ultimately Variation would be the only section of the 'big book' published during his lifetime. It was "intended to provide overwhelming evidence for the ubiquity of variation although it would also incidentally answer Lyell and Gray who maintained that variations had not occurred purely by chance but were providentially directed. Darwin showed that breeders indeed selected from a vast array of minute random variations" ODNB. "He gave numerous instances of the causes of variability including the direct effect of the conditions of life reversion the effects of use and disuse saltation prepotency and correlated growth. Variation also addressed a key criticism of Origin: that it lacked an adequate understanding of inheritance" ibid. This is the only Darwin title published by Murray to appear in the larger format of demy octavo. The first issue was published in a run of 1500 copies for which this copy has all the relevant points: five errata in Volume I nine errata on seven lines in Volume II and the spine imprint on one line. The second issue with substantial textual variations was published in a run of 1250 copies in February and is distinguished by a single erratum in Volume I no errata in Volume II and a two-line imprint on the spine. 2 vols demy octavo. With 43 woodcuts in text. Vol. I with 32 pp. of publisher's advertisements dated April 1867 Vol. II with 2 pp. of advertisements dated February 1868. rif. 76174Norwalk CT: The Easton Press 1976. Evolutionary science COLLECTOR'S EDITION. Octavo 27 x 20cm pp.8 xxx; 470. With a colour frontispiece and numerous wood engravings by Landacre throughout the text. Publisher's black full morocco with designs and titles tooled in gilt to boards and spine. All edges gilt and orange watered-silk endpapers. Light handling otherwise a fine copy. Charles Darwin's On the Origin of Species 1859 is a seminal work in naturalist literature and without doubt the pivotal work and foundation of evolutionary science. It introduced the theory that populations evolve over the course of generations through a process of natural selection. Darwin's book was the culmination of evidence he had accumulated on the voyage of the Beagle in the 1830s and expanded through continuing investigations and experiments since his return.
