1846rif. 371065New York: Harper & Brothers 1846. First American edition. 2 vols. Small 8vo. Publisher's cloth spine chipped with loss wityh blindstamps on title-page from GTS. First American edition. 2 vols. Small 8vo. First American edition of Darwin's important first published book containing the observations and field work that form the basis for On the Origin of Species. "The five years of the voyage were the most important event in Darwin's intellectual life and in the history of biological science. Darwin sailed with no formal scientific training. He returned a hard-headed man of science knowing the importance of evidence almost convinced that species had not always been as they were since the creation but had undergone change. The experiences of his five years in the Beagle how he dealt with them and what they led to built up into a process of epoch-making importance in the history of thought" DSB. Darwin's Journal "his first published book is undoubtedly the most often read" Freeman 31. It is "one of the most interesting records of natural history exploration ever written and is one of the most important for it was on this voyage that Darwin prepared for his lifework ultimately leading to The Origin of Species" Hill I 104-5. First published in 1839 as "the third volume of The Narrative of the Voyages of H.M. Ships Adventure and Beagle edited by Captain Robert Fitzroy. Since then it has changed its name four times so that today it is universally referred to as The Voyage of the Beagle. On its first appearance in its own right also in 1839 it was called Journal of Researches into the Geology and Natural History etc. The second edition of 1845 transposes 'Geology' and 'Natural History'. and the spine title is Naturalist's Voyage" Freeman 32. This first American edition is based on that 1845 second London edition. Issued as Harper's New Miscellany Volumes X and XI. Freeman 16; Sabin 18647 Harper & Brothers unknown

1862rif. 143986London: John Murray 1862. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. London John Murray 1862 first edition first issue. Octavo vi 366 32 publisher's advertisements pages with 34 wood-engraved illustrations some full-page one a folding plate additional to the pagination. Ribbon-embossed plum cloth blocked in gilt and blind; covers slightly worn at the corner-tips and unevenly sunned on the spine; old repair to a split at the head of the front joint; contemporary library stamps to a dozen pages but see our footnote; front hinge cracked but firm; a few other minor signs of age and handling; a very good copy. The scarce first issue of Darwin's first major work after 'On the Origin of Species' 1859. Its exploration of the mechanisms of pollination offered a persuasive observable demonstration of his theory of natural selection in operation in particular through the coevolution of insects and the sexual structures of the orchids that they fertilise. Although praised by botanists the book did not sell well and in later issues the sheets from the first printing were offered in a variant binding and with advertisements dated as late as 1871. This example is in the first-issue binding and has advertisements dated December 1861. The total edition likely comprised fewer than 2000 copies. This copy has the contemporary blindstamp of the Adelaide bookseller W.C. Rigby to the front free endpaper and flyleaf and the contemporary library stamps of the Gawler Institute attesting to the early importation of Darwin's works into colonial South Australia. The title page has an early manuscript shelf mark in ink the Gawler Institute red inkstamp with the inserted reference number 1947 and a much later blue inkstamp for the Salisbury North High School Library. That this book has survived at all is cause for celebration. Freeman 800 'variant a.'. John Murray hardcover
1881rif. 144232London: John Murray 1881. Hardcover. Very Good. London John Murray 1881 fourth thousand/ 1881. Octavo viii 326 2 list of Darwin's works colophon pages with 15 illustrations. Green cloth lettered and decorated in gilt on the spine and decorated in blind on the sides; all edges uncut; slight wear to the extremities; leaves adjacent to the endpapers foxed with scattered light foxing elsewhere; front hinge lightly stabilised; one preliminary leaf creased with a few short marginal tears expertly sealed; a few minor signs of age and use; a very good copy. 'This last book is outside the main stream of Darwin's work and reverts to his earlier geological interests. He had indeed published a paper on mould in 1838 in the "Proceedings of the Geological Society of London" Vol. ii pp. 5-74-76 which he had read to the Society in the previous year. The book was remarkably successful selling 6000 copies within a year and 13000 before the end of the century . Darwin comments that he corrected the sixth thousand of 1882' Freeman R.B.: 'The Works of Charles Darwin: An Annotated Bibliographical Handlist' page 33. Freeman 322. Darwin died on 19 April 1882 soon after the publication of this edition. Provenance: Dr Kenneth Ernest Lee 1927-2007 distinguished NZ-born Australian soil scientist with his signature and 1982 book purchase details at the head of the title page. Loosely inserted in the book is his obituary: not least it records that Lee's influential 1985 publication 'Earthworms: their Ecology and Relationships with Soils and Land Use' was the direct descendant of Darwin's pioneering work. Mounted on the front pastedown is the earlier armorial bookplate of James Rankin 'Prudentia et Virtute'. John Murray hardcover

rif. 47354by means of natural selection or the preservation of favoured races in the struggle for life. London : John Murray 1872. Sixth edition with additions and corrections eleventh thousand. Octavo modern full crushed blue Morocco with gilt ornamental edging spine in compartments with raised bands lettered and tooled in gilt gilt dentelles marbled endpapers pp xxi blank 458 folding lithographed plate; light scattered foxing a very presentable copy. The first printing of the sixth edition - the final authoritative edition of one of the most important texts in the history of science. The first edition of 1859 a great rarity is described in Freeman as "". the most important biological work ever written.""; Dibner "". the most important single work in science.""; Printing & the Mind of Man "". revolutionized our methods of thinking and our outlook on the natural order of things. The recognition that constant change is the order of the universe had been finally established and a vast step forward in the uniformity of nature had been taken"". The sixth edition extensively rewritten by Darwin removed the word 'On' from the title 'On the origin of species' and includes rebuttal of Roman Catholic biologist St. George Mivart's theological arguments in his 1871 text On the Genesis of Species. Printed in a run of 3000 copies it is significant for including the use of the word 'evolution' for the first time in furtherance of Darwin's argument for natural selection. It is the last edition published in Darwin's lifetime and includes extensive revisions and rewriting by the author. The sixth edition includes all Darwin's revisions since On the origin of species was first released in 1859 and is considered the definitive text for what many consider to be the most significant scientific book ever published. The first printing of the sixth edition ie: Eleventh thousand is bibliographically and scientifically significant and is notably scarce in the market. All later imprints are in essence reprints of this edition. Freeman 391 Â hardcover

In this work Darwin explores the biological aspects of emotional behaviour and the animal origins of human emotional expression. To illustrate human emotion Darwin used photographs by five different photographers most notably Oscar Gustave Rejlander 18131875 who contributed 19 of the 30 photographs. The heliotype plates are among the earliest commercially reproduced photographs in a scientific book.Freeman 1142. John Murray hardcover
