1809ref. Flo541Very good copy of the first edition of this classic of equestrian humour With 26 of 29 handcoloured copperplate engravings by Thomas Rowlandson after illustrations by George Moutard Woodward and Henry Bunbury unsigned The illustrations show Regency gents falling off horses ladies falling off horses gamblers pursued by officers of the debtors' prisons raggedy dogs yokel fashions and furniture famous beauties etc. The 26 plates include: portrait of Caleb Quizem Esq. title page vignette with courtier falling from Pegasus The Maid of Mim; Costume of Hogs Norton: Morning dress; Game Wigs 2 plates; Hounds 2 plates; Mathematical Horsemanship 6 plates; The True Method of Sitting on a Horse Mathematically Delineated; How to Vault from the Saddle; Fashionable Furniture at Hogs Norton 2 plates; and The Bailiffs Hunt 8 plates. Lacks the folding plate The Bucephalus Riding Academy for Grown Gentlemen and two other plates Costume of Hogs Norton: A Back Front View of Miss Dickinson's new Dress and How a Man may Shoot his own Wig. George Murgatroyd Woodward 1765–1809 more commonly known as George "Moutard" or "Mustard" Woodward was an English caricaturist and humourist. He was a friend collaborator and drinking companion of Thomas Rowlandson who engraved many of his prints. Thomas Rowlandson 1757-1827 was an English artist and caricaturist of the Georgian and Regency eras noted for his ribald satire and social observation. A prolific artist and printmaker his most famous works include The Miseries of Human Life 1808 The Tours of Dr. Syntax 1812-21 Microcosm of London 1810 The English Dance of Death 1815 Military Adventures of Johnny Newcome 1815 History of Johnny Quae Genus 1822 The English Spy 1826 etc. The pseudonym Caleb Quizem is often attributed to the artist George Moutard Woodward. The portrait however links the author to Geoffrey Gambado i.e. Francis Grose. In the picture a corpulent man sits in an armchair looking at the viewer through a monocle. Two books Gambado's Annals of Horsemanship a popular book attributed to Grose reissued with Rowlandson's engravings in 1809 and Laurence Sterne's Tristam Shandy are on the table next to him and a portrait of Gambado with gouty foot and crutch hangs on the wall. 1956ref. 9700New York: Hammer Creek Press 1956. Original Wrappers. Near Fine binding. 12mo. 24 4 blank1 pp. illus. Limited edition to approximately 100 copies. As issued in marbled paper wrappers of stiff covers with printed paper title label on the front cover. Quite a nice copy with little in the way of shelf-rubbing to the cover; Reynolds Stone-designed bookplate of noted collector Norman Sondheim inside the front cover. Short introduction by Fass about the history and aim of the press. Includes 43 described books announcements and ephemera from the press. As this present work is the 43rd item in Fass's list and only 35th in Cohen's checklist there are apparently inclusions here not noted in Cohen. Several examples of pressmarks by DePol Angelo and Carnes. Two by Valenti Angelo are done in multiple colors with gilding. The Hammer Creek Press began when in 1950 when Fass purchased from Valenti Angelo a small Hughes & Kimber cast iron press previously owned by Bruce Rogers who had sold it to Angelo the year before. It was on this press of significant provenance that the bulk of the Hammer Creek Press editions were printed including this present book. Opening this work is an engraving by John DePol of the storied press with a page of "Data" by Fass. One of the mores substantial works issued by the Press as well as one of the more uncommon titles despite the larger-than-usual limitation. As more than 30 institutions are reporting ownership according to OCLC it means this is increasingly rare in commerce. A lovely example of Fass's work. Cohen 35. Hammer Creek Press unknown

1826ref. ABE-90785021091826 Faust was Goethe's most celebrated creation with international editions in his lifetime and subsequently in films and books across the world with translations in most languages. This is a complete set of the 26 engravings Moritz Retzsh produced as an illustration of Goethe's text; the book has no words in it not even a publisher or date. What it does have is a fabulous set of the original plate pulls complete with plate marks. Friedrich August Moritz Retzsch was a German painter draughtsman and etcher; much celebrated in his day. This is in a way a fine example of what would now called a graphic novel. The 26 etched pictures tell the story and words are not needed. In Germany there were many such books without words and this one in particular influenced the English Pre Raphaelites. This volume is in its original binding with a very fragile leather spine which turns around to the original marbled cover boards which are also in a fragile state. There is no title page or date and no publishing house is mentioned. The corners are leather also and the spine has five subtly raised bands and no title. A much poorer copy of this was featured in the exhibition of Pre Raphaelites at Tate Britain. My copy is considerably better but it is by no means a fine one. It has been used and looked at probably a great deal over the last 200 years or so. The leather is very worn the marbled cover boards are patinated and there is a mixture of hand written names and an inscription on the front end paper. It is very rare in any state at all because it was easily broken up so the plates could be framed. This is I must stress a complete bound full set and as such it is very rare indeed. The earlier of the two dated inscriptions states 1826; but it cannot be viewed as an accurate issue date. An edition exists which has a German title page and text but this is not one of those. It's a bit of a mystery. The exhibited copy in the Tate exhibition was inspected by me I knew one of the curators and it was also without any text. International Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. hardcover

1971ref. —— ENGLISH DESCRIPTION : AQUATINT N° 1 OF THE SUITE "FÊTES", for a book of poems by Jacques Prévert. Maeght Éditeur, Paris 1971. AQUATINT WITH EMBOSSING PRINTED ON AUVERGNE DE RICHARD DE BAS AND PUBLISHED IN FIFTY COPIES ONLY. This print on Auvergne with double watermark is not signed. From the head edition of the book. (Sheet : 45 x 34,2 cm and composition : 32 x 23,3 cm). —— Note: For each of the seven engravings, Calder first made a precise color drawing. Then he cut the shapes thus drawn out of a metal plate. These shapes were then placed on the open press, in accordance with the original design. The colors, deliberately bright, were applied with a brush, the paper was placed on top, and the whole thing was put through the press. This unique engraving technique gave a subtle relief imprint in the paper of each plate. Bibliography: Bénézit 3-117; Johnson 152; Monod 9290;Prout-II-71-05; Lhermitte 487.
