1971ref. —— English description: FETES: suite of 7 aquatint engravings with embossing. Maeght Éditeur, Paris 1971. - PLATE N° 7 OF THE SUITE, PRINTED ON ARCHES PAPER AND PUBLISHED IN 175 COPIES (150 + 25 HC). The print on Arches paper is not signed. Bibliography: Bénézit 3-117; Johnson 152; Monod 9290;Prout-II-71-05; Lhermitte 487. Note: For each of the seven engravings, Calder first made a precise color drawing. Then he cut the shapes thus drawn out of a metal plate. These shapes were then placed on the open press, in accordance with the original design. The colors, deliberately bright, were applied with a brush, the paper was placed on top, and the whole thing was put through the press. This unique engraving technique gave a subtle relief imprint in the paper of each plate.

1809ref. Flo540Very good copy of this classic of equestrian humour First edition with the improved Thomas Rowlandson engravings of this popular book that went through many editions Complete copy with 29 handcoloured copperplates engraved by Rowlandson after designs by Henry Bunbury An Academy for Grown Horsemen; containing the Completest Instructions for Walking Trotting Cantering Galloping Strumbling and Tumbling with Annals of Horsemanship: Containing Accounts of Accidental Experiments and Experimental Accidents both Successful and Unsuccessful Communicated by Various Correspondents. The text has been attributed to the artist Henry Bunbury and Francis Grose the antiquarian and compiler of a Classical Dictionary of the Vulgar Tongue. In the 19th century the humorous text was ascribed to Grose in Catalogue of the library of the late Sir Francis Feeling 1836 John Bohn's Catalogue of English Books 1843 Samuel Halkett's Dictionary of the Anonymous and Pseudonymous Literature of Great Britain 1882 D.C. Sapp's The Honey Jar 1898 etc. John C. Riely however in The Age of Horace Walpole in Caricature 1973 claims that Grose only contributed the introduction. Henry William Bunbury 1750-1811 "drew chiefly in pencil or black and red chalk; but although he seems to have used the needle he was never successful as an etcher and his designs were generally reproduced by engravers mostly in stipple or dot. The three works by which he is best known belong to 1787: A Long Minuet The Propagation of a Lie and the volume of equestrian misadventures called An Academy for Grown Horsemen by Geoffrey Gambado. In 1791 appeared the Annals of Horsemanship a kind of sequel to the Academy for Grown Horseman." D.N.B. 1929ref. ARC93326The Cresset Press London 1929. Book. Very Good. Hardcover. 1st Edition. First edition printed at the Curwen Press and limited to 450 numbered copies on mould-made paper plus a further thirty deluxe copies this one of the 450 examples but un-numbered. Large 4to. 406pp. Bound in full brown buckram with two red leather spine labels lettered and bordered in gold this binding unusual as the 'correct' binding should be white vellum; the fact that this example is un-numbered may suggest that it was intended as a trial or proof copy or perhaps a file copy. Fore- and bottom edges untrimmed. A touch of very light spotting to the edges and endpapers and to very occasional leaf margins. Backstrip ends very gently rubbed. A very good copy of an uncommon and quite delightful production: a tour-de-force collaboration featuring some of the finest wood engravers of the post-Great War period each one tackling one of the fourteen books classified as apocryphal by the King James Bible. The Cresset Press, London Hardcover
First edition, large folio, [2], 2pp., without the list of subscribers, engraved frontispiece and 10 engraved plates with a total of 26 portraits of royalists, letter-press title and preface, some minor spotting and light browning but overall the plates are very clean and bright, expertly rebound in cont. style calf calf, marbled boards, red morocco spine label, an attractive copy. Rare: ESTC locates only three copy in the UK (all at Oxford) and four copies in North America. A reason for the scarcity of the complete volume may be found in a note on the title page, which advises that: "As these Prints are an agreeable Ornament for Rooms, they may be had of the Proprietors in neat black Frames and Glasses". Vertue's parents had served in the court of the exiled James II, and the publication of this volume in praise of loyal servants to the Stuart crown in the year of Culloden may well suggest Jacobite sympathies. This may be signalled by couplet from Pope quoted in the frontispiece: "Rich Industry Sat Smiling on the Plain | And Peace, and Plenty, told a Stuart's reign."
