‎Godin, Louis, astronomer (1704-1760).‎

‎Autograph letter signed ("Godin"). Petit-Goâve, Saint-Domingue (Haiti), 28. X. 1735.‎

‎4to. 2½ pp. A long, highly interesting letter written from Haiti, during the early months of the French Royal expedition for the measurement of the meridian arc. - In 1734 Godin had been requested to submit to the French chief minister the best means of measuring the exact figure of the Earth, and proposed sending expeditions to the Equator and the polar sea. The plan was approved, and three members of the Académie, Pierre Bouguer, Charles de La Condamine, and Godin, were sent on the mission to Peru. They sailed from La Rochelle on 16 May 1735 and remained in Haiti for six months, taking observations. They would arrive in Quito in February 1736, cross the Andes, and remain for two years. - In his letter, Godin discusses mémoires read at the Academy, in particular that of Maupertuis: "Des deux memoires lus à notre occasion dans l'Academie, celuy de M. de Maupertuis, me toucher les plus. - Very light browning in places. Old page numbers (13-16) in red ink in a different hand; very well preserved.‎

‎Dubuffet, Jean, French painter (1901-1985).‎

‎7 autograph letters signed, 4 letters signed, 13 autograph notes, one of which signed, and 5 autograph receipts. Paris, Vence, El Goléa (El Meniaa, Algeria), and no place, 1948-1960.‎

‎Various formats. Altogether ca. 23 pp. on 32 ff. Together with 2 postcards by Lili Dubuffet, 1 letter by Alexandre Vialatte, a facsimile postcard by Jean Dubuffet, the reproduction of a group photograph with Dubuffet and Sibille Boffard, a poster for a 1950 exhibition at Galerie Nina Daucet, a short text on the relationship between Dubuffet and Boffard, and other documents. In French. Correspondence with his neighbour in Paris, informal assistant, and close friend Sibille Boffard. Most letters are charming documents of the friendship, including the earliest two letters from Dubuffet's 1948 stay in El Meniaa (El Golea), Algeria. On 23 January he sends greetings to Boffard and mutual friends including the writer Alexandre Vialatte and complains about the weather: "Who expects to find heat here is terribly mistaken. One lives wrapped in the wide and heavy burnous that deprives you of the usage of the hands and the hood makes it impossible to see and to move the head". The second letter from 22 April is no less skeptical: "Travelling is like hunting marsh birds - long, tedious times, inconvenience and annoyance - occasionally rewarded with a good catch. Travelling to countries that are very uncomfortable for the body and the mind has this advantage over others that they make the return more enjoyable. We have been waiting for several days for a car that removes us from this place in the desert [...]". In a letter from 15 May 1949, Dubuffet contemplates the institution of "two kinds of marriage", one that is easily dissolved and one "for the venturers" that is inseparable, and invites Boffard for cake. In an undated letter, he thanks her enthusiastically for a party, underlining that it "has been a long time since I had been so highly amused". Two letters, one of which is dated 13 July 1955, the other undated, of a personal nature strike a darker note. In the dated letter from Vence, Dubuffet first thanks Boffard for sending him yearbooks that he uses to clean his brushes. He then mentions that she has been "severely tested" by life, wishing her well and discusses his wife's depression that renders the atmosphere in the house "often sombre". In the second letter, also to thank Boffard for yearbooks, Dubuffet writes about a severe case of lumbago that keeps him from work. - Two undated letters probably from the late 40s contain work-related instructions for Boffard. In a typed letter, Dubuffet instructs her to varnish a glass pane in his workshop, to convey two drawings of hippos from his "Collection de l'art brut" to a photographer, and to gather information concerning possibilities for the reproduction of a drawing of Slavko Kopac, the longtime curator of the Art brut collection. The second letter with instructions is truly remarkable, as Dubuffet had sent art supplies to Boffard to be distributed to the outsider artists Georges Berthomier (1897-1963) and Fernand Costa in the psychiatric hospital of Ville-Évrard. Dubuffet added a sketch of the hospital, indicating the pavilion of Juliette Élisa Bataille and enclosing a list of several patients with details concerning their interest in artistic work. He also asks Boffard to meet a Madame Sée in order to establish contact with a Swedish psychiatrist. Dubuffet's famous and groundbreaking Art brut exhibition was held in October 1949 at the Galerie René Drouin. The enclosed facsimile postcard was Boffard’s invitation to the opening. - The final three letters concern works by Dubuffet in Boffard’s possession. In an undated letter, he asks her to lend him a "small gray gouache" of his for an exhibition at the gallery of René Drouin, possibly the Art brut exhibition. This is possibly the same gouache that Dubuffet discusses in a long typed letter from 15 April 1960. There he bitterly complains to Boffard, as she "refuses to help him with the research" on the gouache that had apparently changed ownership in the meantime. Dubuffet explains to her that it is normal and beneficial for a collector to participate in the preparation of an artist's catalogue raisonné. In the final letter from 22 April 1960, Dubuffet thanks Boffard for her response, explaining that he is convinced that the new owner, a Mrs de Gavardy, will permit photographs to be taken. - Ten notes are instructions for Sibille Boffard or indicate the names of businesses, including a frame maker and a bookbinder, with which she had to deal for him. Three notes contain short aphorisms on love: "On est toujours soûlé quand on est amoureux". - Well preserved overall. Several notes and letters with instructions crossed out by Sibille Boffard. Some browning, occasional minor tears, particularly to the notes and receipts.‎

‎Favrat, Marc (Marquis de), painter, lover of Elisabeth of Romania (fl. 1950).‎

‎Autograph correspondence card signed. Golfe-Juan (Cannes), 9. VII. 1957.‎

‎Oblong 8vo. 1¾ pp. To a Madame with the news that Favrat has returned from Paris, where he spent a nice evening at Florence's place, and about a small request (not further discussed) by their mutual friend Pierre Besançon de Wagner, husband of the Belgian-born fashion designer Maggy Rouff (Marguerite de Wagner): "Je rentre de Paris où j'étais depuis cette charmante soirée chez Florence. J'en garde d'ailleurs une souvenir d'autant plus agréable puisque j'eu le plaisir de vous revoir aussi que Monsieur le Préfet. Je n'oserais pas vous importuner avec la petite requête si malicieusement présentée pas notre ami Pierre Besançon [...]". - Marc Favrat had met Elisabeth of Romania (1894-1956) in France, where she finally settled in Cannes some years after her expulsion from Romania in 1947, when the Romanian People's Republic had been proclaimed. The much younger aspiring artist Favrat became Elisabeth's lover, equerry (or Grand Chamberlain), and adopted son in the year of her death. - With printed monogram, on mourning paper.‎

‎[Galician petroleum industry].‎

Album for the 60th birthday of the Canadian oil magnate William Henry McGarvey. Vienna, 1903.‎

‎Folio (47 x 36 cm). German, Polish, and English manuscript on paper. 11 ff. With calligraphed title, three watercolour vedutas, and numerous signatures and stamps of McGarvey's business partners in Galicia. Bound on cloth tabs and spine and thus stored loosely in an original dark blue full calf portfolio by F. W. Papke of Vienna, with elaborate, partly gilt brass ornaments and giltstamped borders to the upper cover (lacking two central ornaments) and protective brass beams across the lower cover. Inside covers have yellow moirée silk pastedowns within wide giltstamped floral borders. All edges gilt. Unique, luxurious testimony to the late 19th and early 20th century oil boom in Galicia and to one of its central protagonists. Three watercolours on the title-page show a view of Mariiampil (in present-day western Ukraine), where McGarvey had built his first refinery in Galicia, McGarvey’s "first home" in the region, and an oil well in the now Polish village of Wietrzno. This is followed by three pages of a laudatory address in German, Polish, and English, all with floral art-nouveau borders and initials. McGarvey is hailed as a technological innovator whom fate "across the Ocean" to his new home 19 years ago. - Since the album was commissioned by McGarvey's local business partners and competitors, emphasis is placed on his fairness and on his unfailing attention the oil industry: "you never ceased to care for the whole oil industry, and you became a friend and protector of the small, even the smallest oil producers and refiners, you were the adviser and promoter of every single workman, you became the benefactor of our country Galicia". The remainder of the album offers the signatures of more than 150 congratulators (with several business stamps) on five leaves. This is a valuable document of the Galician oil industry in general and of the significant involvement of Jewish businessmen in particular. - William Henry McGarvey (1843-1914) became probably the most successful oilman of Galicia through the introduction (in 1883) of the Canadian "pole tool" drilling system that allowed for oil exploration at previously unheard-of depths and speed. His "Galizische Karpathen-Petroleum-AG", headquartered in Vienna, was among the most lucrative companies in the Austro-Hungarian empire and made multimillionaires of McGarvey and his British partner John Simeon Bergheim. In 1908, McGarvey was knighted by Emperor Franz Joseph for his innovations that had enabled Austria-Hungary to become a net oil exporter. Retreating Russian troops who briefly had occupied Galicia in the first months of the First World War set fire to Galicia's oil wells and blew up the refineries, effectively destroying the oil industry and McGarvey’s business. - The splendid album was designed and executed by the Austrian painter and illustrator Erwin Pendl (1875-1945). Minor foxing to the title-page and the first page of signatures: occasional light stains. Well preserved with only very minor scratches and flaws to the upper cover.‎

‎Camus, Albert, French writer, philosopher and Nobel laureate (1913-1960).‎

‎Typed letter signed. In French. Paris, 2 Sept. [1955].‎

‎8vo. 1 p. To the German-American romanist Konrad Ferdinand Bieber (1916-2006), thanking him for an article that Camus will "send to [his] editor" as they are starting a "revision of the translation", in all likelihood of the 1954 English edition of "The Rebel". Camus also expresses his regret that he failed to meet Bieber in Paris during the summer because he "quits Paris more and more often to be able to work" and asks him to announce his next visit in advance so they can arrange a meeting. In a short postscript, Camus informs Bieber that his preface to Bieber's book "has led to a brief polemic" that he will send him in order to give him an idea "of the pleasures of being a French writer". - Although Camus does not name any of the texts referenced in the letter, they are easily identified. In May 1955, Bieber published his article "The Translator - Friend or foe?" on the mixed reception of Camus's "The Rebel" in Anthony Bower's translation. Bieber's book "L'Allemagne vue par les écrivains de la Résistance française" with a preface by Camus was published in Geneva and Lille in 1954. - On stationery of Camus's publisher "Librairie Gallimard". The year "55" marked in ballpoint, probably by the recipient. Well preserved. Cf. K. F. Bieber, The Translator - Friend or foe?, in: The French Review, vol. 28, no. 6 (May, 1955), pp. 493-497.‎

‎4to. Altogether 3 pp. Correspondence with his editor Robert K. Spencer at Appleton-Century-Crofts concerning several projects. In the earliest letter, Simenon thanks Spencer "for the good news about the successful career of 'Trois Nouvelles de Georges Simenon' [...] and of 'Tournants Dangereux'". The latter title was published as early as 1953, whereas the three novels appeared in 1966, both in French and for an American audience. He expresses his hope that Spencer "will find some suitable material in 'La Rue aux Trois Poussins'" for another anthology but concedes that he has not written any novels in twenty years. - In February 1969, Simenon asks for an author's fee of "10% of the volumes sales price" for "various short stories" appearing in a textbook. Simenon also informs Spencer that he cannot extend his "field of action to all English speaking countries of the world", referring specifically to "the British Empire" and Canada, which shall remain "an open market". - The third letter was sent with a contract "reflecting our recent correspondence", asking Spencer to return it signed. Simenon hopes that "the new anthology will have the success of the previous textbooks". - The two letters from 1969 with recipient's notes in ballpoint pen and pencil; the letter from 20 February 1969 with a minor tear to the upper margin. ‎Autograph lettercard signed ("Massenet"). [Paris, 29. XII. 1911 (postmark)].‎

‎12mo. 1 p. With autograph address. Poetic New Year's wishes for the French soprano Fidès Adler-Devriès (1851-1941): "1912. Comment ma première pensée ne serait-elle pas sur cous, au début de chaque année?! - Votre souvenir / reste pour moi / une gloire unique!". - Born in New Orléans to the Dutch soprano Rosa de Vries-van Os, Fidès Adler-Devriès studied under Gilbert Duprez and made her debut in Fromental Halévy's "Le val d'Andorre" at the Théâtre Lyrique in Paris in October 1868 and joined the Paris Opéra in 1871. For Jules Massenet she created the female lead Chimène in the premiere of "Le Cid" at the Paris Opéra on 30 November 1885. Her final major appearance was as Elsa in the French premiere of Lohengrin on 3 May 1887, before retiring from the stage in 1889. Jules Massenet held the soprano in high esteem, of which this letter gives charming evidence. - Well preserved with marks in crayon and some stains to the address side.‎

‎8vo. 4 pp. on bifolium. In French. To a friend about his eight-month stay in the United States, where he travelled from New York to San Francisco studying the reform of the Catholic church and trying to establish a rapprochement among the various religious communities, mentioning that his lectures were well attended with the exception of July, when all major cities were deserted by anyone interested in talks given in a foreign language, and concluding with his bewilderment by the American way of secularism as well as the nature of presidential power: "J'ai été en Amérique pour y faire connaître l'oeuvre de réforme que je poursuis au sein de l'Eglise Catholique, en même temps que celle de rapprochement entre les diverses communautés chrétiennes et même les hommes religieux de toute école. - Top right corner somewhat creased, traces of mounting; slightly spotty.‎

‎Autograph inscription signed. [Paris, 1879].‎

‎4to. 3 lines on the title-page of the "Musée Africain" catalogue. Mounted on backing paper. Inscribed to "Mosenthal", probably a relative of the late dramatist and poet Salomon Hermann Mosenthal (1821-77): "A mon. de Mosenthal / Avec mes plus vifs remercimens [...]". - Belot's play "La Venus Noire" premiered at the Théâtre du Châtelet in 1879. The present catalogue refers to an "African museum" installed in the theatre lobby, to be explored before and after the show. It featured kitchen utensils, toys, weapons, fetishes, fabrics, masks, maps and stuffed birds from "black Africa". The theatre gave out programmes and auctioned off the artifacts after the last show. - As a pencil note on the reverse suggests, the narrowliy trimmed backing paper appears to be have been previously used to hold an autograph of Sir James W. from a journey to South Africa. - The catalogue title-page shows several marginal tears, one touching two words of the inscription.‎

‎Flament, Albert, French journalist, novelist and critic (1877-1956).‎

‎8vo. 2 pp. In French. To an English friend about an accident his sister Marcelle suffered upon her arrival to London with her family - a fall down the staircase which resulted in an operation from which she is currently recovering: "Marcelle est en ce moment à Londres avec son mari et ses enfants [...] à peine arrivée à Londres, dans la maison qu'ils avaient louée, ma soeur est tombée dans l'escalier. Il a fallu la transporter dans une maison de santé et lui faire une opération. Elle est maintenant à peu près rétablie, mais faible". - He mentions that he has so far received from Marcelle a single letter, written in bed and in pencil. He says that he does not recall her home address in Wembley, but provides the address of the Westminster Gazette where his brother-in-law, Hiram Pattinson Knight, is employed: "Elle n'a pu m'écrire encore qu'une fois et au crayon, dans son lit. Je n'ai malheureusement pas la dernière lettre de ma soeur ici. Ils sont à Wembley, mais je ne me rappelle plus l'adresse! Mais mon beau frère a été demandé au Westminster Gazette et, en ce moment, je sais qu'il y va tous les jours. Je lui ai écrit là plusieurs fois [...]". - Flament adds that Marcelle and her husband frequently speak of her and her kindness towards them, fondly remembering their visit to England and the walk they took near Bognor, and concludes with his wish to see her before she leaves Paris: "Marcelle et lui m'ont souvent parlé de vous, de vos gentillesses pour eux. Je n'ai pas oublié la visite que nous vous avons faite, ni l'agréable promenade aux environs de Bognor. Je rentrerai à Paris vers le 10 Juin. Je n'ose espérer que vous soyez encore à Paris.
