RARE critical edition of 'Midrash Ha-Gadol' on the book of Exodus - a collection of midrashim and exegesis compiled in medieval Yemen, regarded by many as a masterpiece of Jewish Yemenite literature. The editor - David Zvi Hoffmann (1843-1921) was an eminent Orthodox Rabbi and Torah Scholar whose rabbinical training was at the hands of Moshe Schick and Azriel Hildesheimer. Shortly after obtaining his degree, he became employed as a teacher in Samson Raphael Hirsch's Realschule school in Frankfurt am Main, and in 1873 moved to Berlin to join the faculty of the Rabbinical Seminary of Berlin where he eventually became rector in 1899 after the death of Azriel Hildesheimer. This edition was proofed and edited by the Mekize Nirdamim society. 240x165mm. 242 pages. Green cloth rebound Hardcover with gilt spine. Original covers, whitepages and several pages browning. Cover upper and spine yellowing/age-stained. Spine bottom edge slightly bumped. Inner cover and text block edges slightly age-stained. Pen underlining on first title page - no damage to text. Small hole on second title page - no damage to text. Pages yellowing. [SUMMARY]: This extremely rare critical edition of an important medieval Midrash is in good condition.

Page edges/corners slightly bumped/worn. Pages bottom part wrinkled. Pages yellowing and uncut. [SUMMARY]: Despite the aforementioned mostly external damage, this rare Midrash is in good reading condition.

2 vols., 4to., First Edition thus, with fine coloured plates; facsimile volume handsomely bound in half morocco, upper board elaborately blocked and lettered in gilt and colours, companion volume bound in cloth, leather back, the two volumes housed in publisher's clamshell case. EDITION LIMITED TO 1750 COPIES. British Library, Additional MS 47682. Acquired by the British Library in 1952, this world-famous manuscript was held previously at Holkham Hall, Norfolk (Holkham MS 666). It consists of 231 images mainly of episodes in the books of Genesis and Revelation, and is believed to have been produced in London between 1327-40. The superb facsimile is accompanied by a companion volume providing historical context, commentary and a bibliography, with Instructions for care laid in the facsimile volume.

Proof Impressions of Engravings, Designed to Illustrate Mr. Roscoe's Catalogue of the Manuscript Library at Holkham.
Small folio, title page followed one leaf (2pp.) of letterpress description of each plate, one of 50 copies printed, 25 interleaved engravings by William Camden Edwards (1777-1855), 23 of illuminated pages from manuscripts from the library at Holkham, and 2 portraits of the Coke family, some light internal foxing, this copy bears the bookplate of Sir Willoughby Jones, Bt., of Cranmer Hall, Norfolk, cont. half morocco, corners and spine scuffed and worn, t.e.g. The 1st Earl of Leicester commissioned Roscoe to undertake the cataloguing of the important library at Holkham Hall. This was the third and most detailed catalogue of the library, composed during 1820-1829 and consisting of eight hand-written volumes. Initially written by William Roscoe and later revised and extended by Frederic Madden.

Folio, [vi],108pp., 60 fine full-page collotype plates, some intermittent foxing as is usual with this book, this copy printed for presentation to the Baron de Barante and so designated, cont. quarter blue morocco, marbled paper boards, uncut, a nice copy. A very scarce work dealing with twenty-one of the illuminated manuscripts from the magnificent Holkham collection. "One of the most important private collections of books and manuscripts in the United Kingdom... There is no printed catalogue of the Holkham manuscripts, although one has one has been compiled by Roscoe and one by Dorez."?De Ricci. Sir Thomas Coke, Earl of Leicester, travelled extensively on the Continent from 1712 to 1718 and purchased over 600 manuscripts; these came largely from the collection of Giuseppe Valletta at Naples and from the library of San Giovanni in Verdara at Padua. The Greek manuscripts of the Giustiniani library at Venice were obtained en bloc in 1721. The library still remains at Holkham and was largely added to by Thomas William Coke, his grand nephew. In 16° (cm 11,8 x 18,2), legatura mezza pergamena li coeva, precedono il testo a stampa (29) pp manoscritte in chiara leggibile grafia settecentesca, dal titolo: "Viri Illus. S. C. Holmanni Praelectiones Physicae com Breviori Commentario"; le ultime (3) pagine vergate da altra mano, una ventina di cc bianche, (25) cc vergate in frettolosa grafia sempre settecentesca, rilegate all'inverso, poi segue l'opera a stampa: pp (4), 292, (1), sguardie annotate di antica mano; esemplare in buone condizioni: l'opera a stampa presenta qualche arrossamento ad alcune pagine, dovuto alla qualità della carta di area tedesca del tempo, il manoscritto è su carta crema e vergellata, , corredato da qualche disegno e schizzo illustrativo. L'estensore del manoscritto è il primo possessore del volume ("Ex Libris Caroli Ferdinandi Bonvêyre, 1759"), che ha apposto la propria firma alla sguardia, autentico palinsesto ove i successivi proprietari hanno aggiunto date e nomi. Due striscioline di carta residue, tracce di due fogli strappati. Trattato di filosofia dell'Hollmann (1686-1787), professore di filosofia e fisica all'università di Gottinga, membro della Royal Society, reso unico dagli ordinati appunti di un discepolo, che li fece rilegare con l'opera del maestro.
