‎GRIFFITH DW. director D. W.‎

‎Abraham Lincoln lobby card‎

‎N.p.: N.p. 1930. Heavy stock 14" X 11". Very good. Faint single vertical fold as issued; faint age toning. Superb color lobby card for this 1930 talking film written by noted "John Brown's Body" poet Stephen Vincent Benet A United Artists film here rereleased by Art Cinema Corporation. Directed by D.W. Griffith and produced by Griffith and Joseph M. Schenck with Walter Huston portraying Lincoln and Una Merkel her first speaking role portraying Ann Rutledge. Other than a red white and blue border running along the bottom border and left border most of this card is filled by a colorized scene from the film in which Lincoln confers with General Grant portrayed by E. Alyn Warren and one other general as they sit around a dining table in a house during one of Lincoln's field visits. At lower left is a small head-and-shoulders profile portrait of Walter Huston superimposed over a profile of himself as the bearded Lincoln. Across the bottom against a blue background appears the title "Abraham Lincoln" in large white typeface and "with Walter Huston" in yellow in a smaller typeface. A striking and handsome display piece. This was the first of only two "talkies" directed by Griffith 1878-1948 the innovative and influential director best known for his 1915 epic "Birth of a Nation" -- and this was the first feature-length talking film about Abraham Lincoln. While not a commercial success its has since come to be regarded as one of the better Lincoln biopics despite factual inaccuracies. A quite uncommon lobby card. N.p. unknown‎

‎The Birth of a Nation Original handbill for early theatrical run at the Newark Theatre in Newark New Jersey‎

‎Newark: Newark Theatre 1915. Original handbill for a theatrical run of D.W. Griffith's "Birth of a Nation" 1915 at the Newark Theatre in Newark New Jersey. Noted on the bill are cast members Lillian Gish Mae Marsh Donald Crisp and Raoul Walsh here spelled "Raul Walsh" who played John Wilkes Booth. Also noted on the bill is that the film is to be accompanied by a full symphony orchestra under the direction of Albert Pesce who arranged music for four D.W. Griffith films between 1919 and 1922. An early epic from Griffith who was inspired by the sprawling Italian productions "Quo Vadis" 1913 and "Cabiria" 1914 films that not only legitimated the feature film runtime but made extensive use of the traveling camera something Griffith revolutionized in the United States with this film. At the time of production American companies were skeptical of an audience's ability to endure complicated narratives and inflated runtimes so Griffith formed his own production company to take it on leaving Biograph in 1913 where he made numerous successful shorts. Upon release it was an immediate hit with audiences and screened at movie palaces like Newark Theatre for years ultimately becoming the highest grossing film of the silent era. 5.5 x 8 inches. Faint dampstain and small chip to the upper edge overall very well preserved Very Good plus. Newark Theatre unknown‎

Near fine. One of the most significant films ever released in the United States in regards to distribution regulations and was responsible for a fundamental shift in obscenity standards. Subject of a Supreme Court case which it lost but not before public opinion had sufficiently shifted. It was decided 4-4 with William O. Douglas recusing himself for having been previously published in The Evergreen Review upholding a lower court's decision ""Byrne v. Karalexis."" Oyez www.oyez.org/cases/1969/83. ""I Am Curious Yellow had become a national topic of discussion and its record-breaking box-office earnings helped knock down the barriers to the theatrical distribution of sexually explicit films. Grove's legal counsel Edward de Grazi later wrote that the film's case 'was widely considered to have broken the grip of governmental interference with the depiction of sexual lovemaking on the screen.' . 'I Am Curious Yellow was a big success' Barney Rossett explained. 'Because we made a lot of money I went and bought a lot of foreign films--which were no longer viable because all the art theaters had closed down overnight in 1970. They had started showing X-rated porno films. There had been a big market for foreign films in this country and suddenly it was gone. I Am Curious Yellow played that was the end. We killed our own market.'"" Ed Halter From the Third Eye: The Evergreen Review Film Reader New York: 2018 accessed online. Criterion Collection #180. #10029. Grove Press, unknown‎

‎Basic Concepts for the Development of Energy Policies for Russia and Ukraine: A U.S. -Japanese-Russian-Ukrainian Cooperative Approach‎

‎Washington DC: The Atlantic Council of the United States 1993. Presumed first edition/first printing. Wraps. Very good. xvi 78 2 p. Tables. Recommendations. Printed slip with brief summary from David Acheson laid in. Additional authors: Miroslav T. Strlkov National Rapporteur and Tsutomu Toichi National Rapporteur. This is a Policy Paper of The Atlantic Council of the United States. This paper presents comprehensive policy recommendations whih establish a sound foundation for intergovernmental discussions in the area of energy. While "shock therapy" is not deemed appropriate for Russia and Ukraine the working group believes that transition to a market system should be pressed diligently and delibertately taking into account the major adjustments which must be made by society to adapt. From Wikipedia: "The Atlantic Council is a think tank and public policy group whose mission is to "promote constructive U.S. leadership and engagement in international affairs based on the central role of the Atlantic community in meeting the international challenges of the 21st century". It is headquartered in Washington D.C.The Atlantic Council was founded in 1961 with the mission to encourage the continuation of cooperation between North America and Europe that began in the immediate post-war years. In its early years its work consisted largely of publishing policy papers and polling Europeans and Americans about their attitudes towards transatlantic and international cooperation. In these early years its primary focus was on economic issues mainly encouraging free trade between the two continents and to a lesser extent to the rest of the world but it also did some work on political and environmental issues. Although the Atlantic Council did publish policy papers and monographs Melvin Small of Wayne State University wrote that especially in its early years the Council's real strength lie in its connections to influential policy makers. The Council early on found a niche as "center for informal get-togethers" of leaders from both sides of the Atlantic with members working to develop "networks of continuing communication". From its inception the Atlantic Council has worked on issues in regions other than North America and Europe with Asia figuring prominently in the Council's work. The Atlantic Council was among the first organizations advocating for an increased Japanese presence in the international community and in recent years has expanded its focus with the opening of its South Asia Center and Program on Asia. Its Asian programs have expanded in recent years due to the ongoing war in Afghanistan and the new challenge of coordinating with India and China on climate change efforts. In February 2009 James L. Jones then-chairman of the Atlantic Council stepped down in order to serve as President Obama's new National Security Advisor and was succeeded by Senator Chuck Hagel. In addition Council members Susan Rice left to serve as the administration's ambassador to the UN Richard Holbrooke became the Special Representative to Afghanistan and Pakistan General Eric K. Shinseki became the Secretary of Veterans Affairs and Anne-Marie Slaughter became Director of Policy Planning at the State Department. Senator Chuck Hagel stepped down in 2013 to serve as US Secretary of Defense. Gen. Brent Scowcroft now serves as interim chairman of the organization's Board of Directors while a search for his successor is under way. The Atlantic Council has earned praise from across the international community with NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen calling the Council a "pre-eminent think tank" with a "longstanding reputation" and former U.S. Senator Richard Lugar R-IN noting that the Council is "held in high esteem within the Atlantic community". The Atlantic Council has since its inception been a nonpartisan institution with members "from the moderate internationalist wings of both parties." Despite its connections the Council is by charter independent of the US government and NATO and a registered 501c3 nonprofit organization." The Atlantic Council of the United States paperback‎
