UNA VOCE DAL CORO
LIEVE SCREPOLATURA DELL'ANGOLO INFERIORE DX DELLA COPERTINA; PER IL RESTO PERFETTO, MAI SFOGLIATO. Sinjavskij, scrittore russo con lo pseudonimo di Abram Terz, fu arrestato nel settembre 1965 e internato nei gulag sovietici, per aver pubblicato all'estero le proprie opere con lo pseudonimo di Abram Terz e accusato di propaganda reazionaria contro lo stato sovietico. Scelse l'Occidente ma con Gorbaciov si riavvicinò al comunismo. Grande avversario di Solzenicyn, confessò di aver collaborato con il KGB. Il libro fu scritto in diversi lager della Mordovia, dove l'autore ha scontato oltre 5 anni di condanna per i libri da lui scritti. È questa la prima opera (difficile definirla: romanzo, diario, saggio?) pubblicata da Sinjavskij in Occidente dopo aver scelto la via dell'esilio. A ogni parte de! libro (tranne l'ultima, che racconta dell'angoscioso inserimento nella vita «libera») corrisponde un anno di reclusione in lager. Una voce dal coro, infatti, è nata giorno dopo giorno da appunti, note di diario, lettere spedite e non spedite, e registra, in contrappunto con le dense riflessioni esistenziali, religiose e letterarie dell'autore, gli «involontari» interventi di innumerevoli e anonimi compagni di prigionia. Ne risulta una struttura arditamente polifonica, dove la raffinata e meditatissima scrittura di Sinjavskij si pone in rapporto dialettico — quasi un'infinita interrogazione sulle sorgenti stesse dell'espressività — con il parlato ingenuo e brutale, sgrammaticato e immaginifico dell'immenso coro dell'universo concentrazionario. Testimonianza originalissima sull'uomo recluso, Una voce dal coro è anche una nuova, straziata condanna di chiunque attenti alla libertà dell'uomo e dell'artista, ma al tempo stesso partecipa la scoperta di un'«altra» libertà: la paradossale e insopprimibile libertà dell'emarginato. This is the story of Sasha Abramsky s grandparents, Chimen and Miriam Abramsky, and of their unique home at 5 Hillway, around the corner from Hampstead Heath. In their semi-detached house, so deceptively ordinary from the outside, the Abramskys created a remarkable House of Books. It became the repository for Chimen s collection of thousands upon thousands of books, manuscripts and other printed, handwritten and painted documents, representing his journey through the great political, philosophical, religious and ethical debates that have shaped the western world. Chimen Abramsky was barely a teenager when his father, a famous rabbi, was arrested by Stalin s secret police and sentenced to five years hard labour in Siberia, and fifteen when his family was exiled to London. Rejecting his father s Orthodoxy, he became a Communist, made his living as a book-dealer and amassed a huge, and astonishingly rare, library of socialist literature and memorabilia. New York: Communist Party USA 1947. <br /><br />Single-page typed letter and two-page mimeographed petition printed on rectos only. Each page 8 1/2 x 11 inches 215 x 280 mm.<br /><br />A rare typed letter <b>SIGNED</b> in ink by Paul Robeson W.E.B. Du Bois and Roscoe Dungee asking recipients to sign a petition against banning the Communist Party USA. The three African-American leaders sprang into action after President Truman's Labor Secretary Lewis B. Schwellenbach told Congress that the Communist Party should be outlawed. Schwellenbach was concerned about Communist control and infiltration of labor unions and thought no Communist should be allowed to lead a union.<br /><br />The letter is dated March 22 1947 and carries the address of 23 West 26th Street New York the Communist Party's headquarters at the time. The letter is aimed at African-American recipients: "This invitation to sign the petition is also being sent to several hundred other Negro leaders throughout the country."<br /><br />According to the letter "It is clear that Labor Secretary Schwellenbach's proposal to suppress the Communist Party involves a flagrant negation of our constitutional Bill of Rights. It represents therefore a serious threat to the civil liberties of all minority groups." The authors urge recipients to mail back a postal reply card confirming they would sign the petition. The card is not present probably because it was mailed back to the Communist Party.<br /><br />The petition addressed to the President and Congress urges them to reject Schwellenbach's "fascist-like proposal" to ban the Communist Party. Although the Party was not banned the U.S. government regularly harassed and imprisoned its leaders in the 1940s and '50s.<br /><br />No other copies in commerce. Gli autori mostrano come le scelte politiche del Pci - dalla svolta di Salerno alla questione di Trieste, alla «rivoluzione mancata», all'atteggiamento sul rimpatrio dalla Russia dei prigionieri, all'opposizione al Piano Marshall - fossero largamente determinate dalle esigenze della politica estera di Stalin. La «doppiezza» comunista non risiedeva tanto nella compresenza di un'anima legalitaria e di un'anima rivoluzionaria, quanto nella doppia identità di partito nazionale e frazione di un movimento comunista internazionale guidato dall'Unione Sovietica.
