Publiées par Ch.-VANDERBOURG. Edition Originale, très rare. Lors de sa publication, cet ouvrage était vendu 4 fr. sans gravures, 6 fr. avec gravures et musique et 12 fr. sur papier vélin. ( cf. Quérard IX-p. 297 ).Les poésies de madame de Surville ont donné lieu à de nombreuses polémiques leur authenticité a été mise en doute. Il semblerait aujourd'hui qu'elles soient apocryphes. D'après Gaston Paris, le véritable auteur serait le marquis de Surville qui, arrêté comme émissaire royaliste, a été fusillé au Puy-en-Velay, le 18 octobre 1798.

br. "Tra le popolazioni barbare e le civili non ci sono abissi ma trapassi: in questi trapassi è l'essenza del folklore, che diventa scienza quando si integra con l'etnologia". Prima che uno statuto disciplinare riuscisse a catturare l'"indole" del folklore, ed etnologi e folkloristi insigni come Giuseppe Cocchiara perimetrassero l'oggetto dei loro studi, dirimendone le combattute relazioni con mitologia, storia delle religioni, letteratura e filologia, dovettero trascorrere secoli di travaglio di pensiero e ricerche. Irriducibile all'esotico o al pittoresco di maniera, il grande alveo delle tradizioni popolari - fiabe, leggende, proverbi, canti, ma anche costumi, usi, credenze - cominciò a svelare il segreto del suo "continuo morire per un eterno rivivere", ossia della sua perenne rielaborazione, quando l'Europa acquisì consapevolezza storico-critica di se stessa nel confronto sconvolgente con il Nuovo Mondo appena scoperto. Da allora, l'identità culturale europea si cimentò con quanto "di più intimo" potesse racchiudere, ossia il "primitivo a casa propria". Cocchiara risale instancabilmente lungo le infinite diramazioni che da Montaigne arrivano a Tylor, da Vico a Frazer, dai romantici a Pitrè. Accorpa, distingue, illumina genealogie, e soprattutto mette in rapporto la riflessione sul folklore con le correnti filosofiche, scientifiche e letterarie che si sono susseguite.

L'obiettivo della ricerca si è focalizzato sulla figura delle macàre e sulle loro attività magiche, ricostruita attraverso i racconti della tradizione orale contadina. Dai racconti di un recente passato, che risale agli anni del dopoguerra, si passa ad un'analisi degli attuali maghi e guaritori, cercando di rinvenire un filo conduttore fra le antiche e le moderne pratiche magiche.
