The menu was signed by family and friends that were present at the event. The front cover depicts a religious figure on a train along with a large religious figure with many bottles of wine. Roughly translates: "Jeannot Leclerc/First Solemn Communion/Menu/In time the Lord said: "Woe to St. Lo"/and we venerate this holy day our great Patrons/St.Estephe/St. Emilion/Ste. Croix du Mont/Amen.the bottle!" Depicted on the first interior page is an illustration of a scroll and a large man smoking a cigar. Under this illustration and writing is the signatures of over 10 people with a couple of longer notes. Original dark green cloth lettered in gilt on the spine. Cloth spotted corners bumped previous owner's name in pencil at first blank page final leaf creased occasional foxing about Very Good. <br/><br/>288 pages describing every conceivable sort of foodstuff presented alphabetically and greatly enhanced by lavish color plates and additional b/w illustrations. The Hand-Book originally published in 1882 demonstrates the compiler’s enthusiasm for the wide wide world of culinary possibilities available in the late 19th century. Ward who was a pioneer of modern advertising and publicity additionally includes articles selected from the Philadelphia Grocer most notably "Sugar at Cost†questioning the social ethics of selling commodities for profit.
