The History of America the Works of Wm Robertson D. D. the Seventh Volume
London And Oxford W Pickering Chancery Lane And Talboys And Wheeler 1825. One volume only: From an eight volume set: Rather a complex system of volumes on the title page we have 'The Seventh Volume' turn to the next page and the supplementary title page reads 'Oxford English Classics Dr Robertson's Works History of America Volume II. ' Turn the page again and the chapter begins 'The History of America The Fifth Book. ' Hardbback the book is disbound well used brown leather board to front is detached some scuffing to background matching rear board still attached brown leather with blind stamped edge detail and double gilt line frame to edges no spine marbled endpapers closed page edges dusty on the whole the contents is very good some indication of foxing but basically very clean fold out illustration 402 pages the text covers the Fifth Book to the Eighth Book. This is followed by 'Notes and Illustrations' 64 pages. 8.75 x 5.5 inches approx. This is a book that would benefit from sympathetic restoration. The text appears to start at the year 1518 Preparations of Velasquez for invading New Spain rounding off in Book VIII with Trade Between New Spain and the Philippines 1564 etc. The book looks at the history of New Spain thus covering Peru Panama Guatemala Chile and other places in South America stretching to Mexico looking at tribes of Indians trade and changes. A book that could make up a set or it could be read on its own merits to gain an insight into the history of the period. A Heavy Book. . Robertson, David.
A Tour Through the Isle of Man: To Which is Subjoined a Review of the Manks History. London, for the author, by E. Hodson, Bell-Yard, Temple-Bar, 1794.
Large 8vo (170 x 265 mm). (12), 235, (1) pp. With 8 aquatint plates by George Isham Parkyns. Bound for Duke Albert of Saxe-Teschen (1728-1822) by Georg Friedrich Krauss in half calf, the boards covered in white paper, the spine in six panels with red goatskin label in the second, lettered in gilt, the remaining panels with sunburst surrounding the Duke's 'AS' monogram, blue silk ribbon marker and marbled endpapers, signed. The reissue in 235 pp., following the suppression of comments on the Duke of Atholl which appeared in the first edition (which was in 233 pp.). - The elegant binding is signed on the second flyleaf by the Viennese artist bookbinder G. F. Krauss (active 1791-1824) with his stamp: "G. F. Krauss, Relieur à Vienne". Krauss must count as the most prominent German bookbinder of his day, and the Duke of Saxe-Teschen was perhaps his most important client. The identity of the Duke's bookbinder was long a mystery, until Martin Breslauer's catalogue 110 offered a Krauss binding for Duke Albert, signed with the same stamp as ours, obviously performed in his style and with the Duke's monogram. Maria Theresa's son-in-law and sometime governor of Hungary (and then of Belgium), Duke Albert was a collector of the first order. His collection of graphic art forms the nucleus of Vienna's Albertina; "as a bibliophile he evinced a special taste for good typography [...] Oddly, scholarship was long at a loss to identify Albert's bookbinders. Only recently [with the discovery of Breslauer's signed binding] could it be proved that Krauss bound at least parts of Duke Albert's library" (Schäfer). - Binding beautifully preserved. An excellent copy on large paper. ESTC T100101. Cf. Abbey Scenery 555.

Sixteen "Platinogram" Views of London Robey's Series
London: T.F. Robey 1890. Very Good. 16 black-and-white collotype views loose as issued in a light green envelope. Title from envelope. "Robey's Series" -- on envelope and on each image. Thomas F. Robey was a photographer active in London beginning in the 1890s. From about 1894 to about 1905 he was also active as a commercial photographer and printer with Eustace Curzon. They were among many photographers producing platinotypes or platinum prints around the turn of the century. "Platinogram" was the name given by Robey to these images made from platinotypes. As listed on the envelope the views are: The Tower Bridge Tower of London London Bridge Royal Exchange St. Paul's West Front Embankment Houses of Parliament Westminster Abbey Rotten Row Piccadilly Circus Albert Hall Albert Memorial Crystal Palace Trafalgar Square Ludgate Circus and the Great Wheel. There is no date of publication but the images appear to be from the 1890s. The detail in the street scenes is particularly impressive. There are no motorized vehicles in any of the scenes. Oval stationers label on front of envelope: Rowsell & Son Cheapside. In Very Good Condition: minor creasing at a few corners; loss of corners on two images; clean and bright. Envelope is in Good- Condition: separated into two sections; chipping along edges; minor loss at corners. Extremely scarce -- no other copies of these "Platinogram" views have been located. T.F. Parrot Pie for Breakfast : An Anthology of Women Pioneers
"There is nothing quite like parrot pie for breakfast. First one must catch one's parrot, of course, and build the hearth to bake it, but that is all in a days work for the woman pioneer. This riveting anthology tells the story of over 100 such women spanning four centuries, from the lowliest kitchen skivvy to ambassadors" wives: emigrants who settled the wildernesses of the world in search of new and better lives. Many were lured abroad by the promise of work or fortune; some went because imperial duty called, while for others it was a most unfeminine lust for adventure that drew them away. But all faced challenges in their homes from home that were to test to the limit their spirits, their resourcefulness, even their survival." 177p. Book

Unsuitable for Ladies : An Anthology of Women Travellers
"Real ladies do not travel - or so it was once said. This collection of women's travel writing dispels the notion by showing how there are few corners of the world that have not been visited by women travellers. There are also few difficulties, physical or emotional, real or imagined, that have not been met and usually overcome by these same women. Jane Robinson's first book,Wayward Women, was a guide to women travellers and their writing, and having read over a thousand of their books she is uniquely qualified to compile this anthology. Life is never dull for her intrepid women, whether diving to the bed of the Timor Sea or reaching the summit of Annapurna. From an encounter with a snake in the Amazon jungle to shipwreck and kidnap on the Barbary Coast, there are tales of adventure, derring-do, and great danger. There are also moving accounts of unimaginable hardship, including caring for a family in an ammunition cart during the siege of Delhi and a journey through Tibet that leaves its author childless and widowed. There is no such thing as a typical woman traveller-and there never has been-as this exhilarating anthology shows on a journey of its own through sixteen centuries of travel writing, aboard almost anything from a Bugatti to a Bath chair. You are taken as far afield as it is possible to go, in the company of some of the most extraordinary characters you are ever likely to meet. " 471p. bibliography.index Book
