‎Narrative of the Battle of Jutland‎

‎London: His Majesty's Stationery Office 1924. Presumed First Edition First printing. Hardcover. Good. iv 121 3 pages Footnotes. Many fold-out maps some with color--45 diagrams listed . List of Ships Sunk. Appendix published by request of Lord Jellicoe. Index. Endpapers discolored. Cover has some wear and soiling. Corners rubbed. The official narrative of what became a very controversial battle with different factions fighting over its contents and interpretations. The Battle of Jutland was a naval battle fought between Britain's Royal Navy Grand Fleet under Admiral Sir John Jellicoe and the Imperial German Navy's High Seas Fleet under Vice-Admiral Reinhard Scheer during the First World War. The battle unfolded in extensive maneuvering and three main engagements the battlecruiser action the fleet action and the night action from 31 May to 1 June 1916 off the North Sea coast of Denmark's Jutland Peninsula. It was the largest naval battle and the only full-scale clash of battleships in that war. Jutland was the last major battle in world history fought primarily by battleships The official British Admiralty examination of the Grand Fleet's performance recognized two main problems: British armor-piercing shells exploded outside the German armor rather than penetrating and exploding within. As a result some German ships with only 8 in 20 cm-thick armor survived hits from 15-inch 38 cm projectiles. Had these shells penetrated the armor and then exploded German losses would probably have been far greater. Communication between ships and the British commander-in-chief were comparatively poor. For most of the battle Jellicoe had no idea where the German ships were even though British ships were in contact. They failed to report enemy positions contrary to the Grand Fleet's Battle Plan. Some of the most important signaling was carried out solely by flag instead of wireless or using redundant methods to ensure communications-a questionable procedure given the mixture of haze and smoke that obscured the battlefield. ‎Report of the Transport of British Prisoners of War to Germany. August-December 1914. Miscellaneous. No. 3 1918‎

‎London: His Majesty's Stationery Office 1918. Wraps. Good. 53 pages. Ex-library. Usual library marking. Chip to front page. Fold marks. Damp stains at fore-edge. Cd. 8984. This was presented to both Houses of Parliament by Command of His Majesty. February 1918. Includes statements by various British military personnel. From Wikipedia: The situation of World War I prisoners of war in Germany is an aspect of the conflict little covered by historical research. However the number of soldiers imprisoned reached a little over seven million for all the belligerents of whom around 2400000 were held by Germany. Starting in 1915 the German authorities put in place a system of camps nearly three hundred in all and did not hesitate to resort to denutrition punishments and psychological mobbing; incarceration was also combined with methodical exploitation of the prisoners. However the captivity organized by the German military authorities also contributed to creating exchanges among peoples and led a number of prisoners to reflect on their involvement in the war and relation with their homeland. Soldiers were not the only ones made prisoner during the war; civilian populations were also impacted. Historian Annette Becker has extensively studied this aspect of the war. After the invasion the German Army started by taking hostages first of all the towns' leading citizens. Several invaded countries were affected by civilian deportations: France Belgium Romania Russia etc. 100000 were deported from France and Belgium. From 1914 both male and female civilians aged 14 and over from the occupied zones were forced to work quite often on projects related to the war effort such as the rebuilding of infrastructure destroyed by fighting roads rail tracks etc. In short order the civilians began to be deported to forced labor camps. There they formed the Zivilarbeiter-Bataillone civilian workers' battalions and wore a distinctive mark: a red armband. Becker indicates that their living conditions resembled those of the prisoners - that is they were harsh. The hostages were sent to camps in Prussia or Lithuania and some of them remained prisoners until 1918. Like the military prisoners civilians were subject to exchanges and a bureau for the repatriation of civilian detainees was created at Bern in 1916. At the end of the war civilian prisoners formed an association the Union nationale des prisonniers civils de guerre. His Majesty's Stationery Office paperback‎

‎Roof Over Britain: The Official Story of Britain's Anti-aircraft Defences 1039-1942‎

‎London: His Majesty's Stationery Office 1943. Presumed first edition/first printing. Wraps. Good. Cover has some wear and soiling. 88 pages. Illustrations. This was prepared for The War Office and The Air Ministry. Captain Anthony Cotterell wrote the Army part of the story and the Air Ministry compiled the story of the balloons. From Wikipedia: "The Air Defence of Great Britain ADGB was a RAF command comprising substantial army and RAF elements responsible for the air defence of the British Isles. It lasted from 1925 following recommendations that the RAF take control of homeland air defence until 1936 when it became RAF Fighter Command. The ADGB was created as a command in 1925 as a result of the 1923 recommendation of the Steel-Bartholomew Committee including their recommendation to transfer responsibility for homeland air defence from the War Office to the Air Ministry. It main initial elements were: The RAF's Metropolitan Air Force initially comprising 25 squadrons 9 fighter soon expanding to 52 squadrons 17 fighter. 264 heavy AA guns Royal Artillery and 672 searchlights Royal Engineers. The newly formed part-time volunteer Observer Corps. ADGB was organised into three defensive zones: Inner Artillery Zone IAZ over London. Air Fighter Zone AFZ divided into two areas controlling regular squadrons the Wessex Bombing Area and the Fighting Area. Outer Artillery Zone OAZ a narrow belt along the coast from Suffolk to Sussex. In 1936 ADGB was abolished as a command with the Bombing Area becoming Bomber Command and the Fighting Area becoming Fighter Command and remaining responsible for the ADGB function. The OAZ was abolished and the AFZ expanded. The guns from the OAZ were used for port and base defence and were added to the London defences. However the changing threat meant that AA defences were needed for many more potential targets in the British Isles notably industries important for war production. The AA component became 1st AA Division and in 1937 2nd AA Division was formed to defend the Midlands with AA Command created to replace the previous Army arrangements. In 1937 light AA guns were added the RAF's view that small-calibre artillery were unsuitable having been finally overturned. In 1940 searchlights were transferred from the Royal Engineers to the Royal Artillery. Unrotated Projectile rocket batteries were deployed at the beginning of the war. At its peak in 1941-42 AA Command comprised three AA corps with twelve AA divisions comprising several hundred regiments. GOC-in-C AA Command for most of the war was General Sir Frederick Pile the equal in rank of his 'superior' AOC-in-C Fighter Command. ADGB was resurrected as a formal command in 1943 for the rump of Fighter Command dedicated to the defence of the United Kingdom after the formation of the Second Tactical Air Force in 1943 and the still-large AA Command. It was Fighter Command in all but name and this was finally reflected in 1944 with a return to the previous name." His Majesty's Stationery Office paperback‎

‎The Bailey Bridge--Normal Uses: Military Engineering Volume III Part III‎

‎London England United Kingdom: Her Majesty's Stationery Office 1954. Reprint. Reprinted with Amendments Nos. 1 to 5. Wraps. Good. Cover has some wear and soiling. Pencil erasure residue on contents page. iv 145 1 p. Includes: illustrations diagrams. Numerous fold-out diagrams. War Office Code No. 7481. This was derived from the Military Engineering Volume III Part II pamphlet No 12 from 1942. It represented the state of the art state of knowledge and the state of practice at the end of the Second World War through the beginning of the Korean War era. From Wikipedia: "The Bailey bridge is a type of portable pre-fabricated truss bridge. It was developed by the British during World War II for military use and saw extensive use by both British and the American military engineering units. A Bailey bridge had the advantages of requiring no special tools or heavy equipment to construct. The wood and steel bridge elements were small and light enough to be carried in trucks and lifted into place by hand without requiring the use of a crane. The bridges were strong enough to carry tanks. Bailey bridges continue to be extensively used in civil engineering construction projects and to provide temporary crossings for foot and vehicle traffic. Donald Bailey was a civil servant in the British War Office who tinkered with model bridges as a hobby. He presented one such model to his chiefs who saw some merit in the design. A team of Royal Engineer RE officers was assembled at the Military Engineering Experimental Establishment MEXE in Barrack Road Christchurch Dorset in 1941 and 1942; among them were Robin Foulkes Darrell Herbert John de Waele and Bill Buckle all R.E. subalterns at the time. In the course of development the bridge was tested in several formats e.g. as a suspension bridge and as a "stepped arch" bridge as well as the flat truss bridge which became the standard. The prototype of this was used to span Mother Siller's Channel which cuts through the nearby Stanpit Marshes an area of marshland at the confluence of the River Avon Hampshire and the River Stour Dorset. It remains there WikiMiniAtlas 5043′ 31″ N 145′ 44″ W / 50.7252806N 1.762155W / 50.7252806; -1.762155 as a functioning bridge. Bridges in the other formats were built temporarily to cross the Avon and Stour in the meadows nearby. After successful development and testing the bridge was taken into service by the Corps of Royal Engineers and first used in North Africa in 1942. A number of bridges were available by 1944 for D-Day when production was accelerated. The US also licensed the design and started rapid construction for their own use. Bailey was later knighted for his invention which continues to be widely produced and used today. 1 The original design however violated a patent on the Callender-Hamilton bridge. The designer of that bridge A. M. Hamilton successfully applied to the Royal Commission on Awards to Inventors. The Bailey bridge however had several advantages over Hamilton's design. For example damaged parts could not be replaced quickly on the Callender-Hamilton bridge an essential requirement for military use. The Callender-Hamilton bridge was modified by the London County Council engineers' department in the design of three emergency bridges which were erected across the River Thames in 1940. Damaged parts of these could be quickly replaced. Experience gained in this work contributed to the development of the Bailey Bridge. Hamilton was awarded 4 000 in 1936 by the War Office for the use of his early bridges and the Royal Commission on Awards to Inventors awarded him 10 000 in 1954 for the use mainly in Asia of his later bridges. Lieutenant General Sir Giffard Le Quesne Martel was awarded 500 for infringement on the design of his box girder bridge the Martel bridge." Her Majesty's Stationery Office paperback‎

‎Working paper on the estimation of depth of seismic events; CCD/402 GS.73-47319‎

‎London: United Kingdom 1973. Xerox copy. Wraps. Fair. 6 pages 4 of text and two of illustrations. Paperclipped. Portions somewhat are a little difficult to read The use of depth criteria in conjunction with other criteria for identifying earthquakes is illustrated in ENDC/155 1965 and in the United Kingdom AWRE Report 0-5/73 which was circulated informally to CCD delegations in early 1973. This working paper addressed the Identification of events using the depth criterion - P and pP waves and Estimation of depths spiking filter techniques and provides two examples and then addresses the value of the techniques. One example is of the Yellowknife seismogram of a nuclear explosion fired near the city of Bukhara to seal off a fire in an oil well. The second example was taken from a seismogram recorded at Guribidanur of and explosion which occurred in Eastern Kazakhstan. The way in which the technique fits into the U.K research and development program on the seismological problems of a CTB are described in CCD/401. The Conference of the Committee on Disarmament was a United Nations disarmament committee authorized by a General Assembly resolution. It began work in 1969 as the successor to the Eighteen Nation Committee on Disarmament. The Conference of the Committee on Disarmament CCD succeeded the Eighteen Nation Committee Disarmament ENCD as the U.N.'s disarmament committee in 1969. In addition to the name change General Assembly Resolution 2602XXIV expanded the membership from the ENDC's 18 to the new CCD's 26. The CCD was enlarged again by the General Assembly from 26 to 31 nations in 1975. Throughout the process of UN disarmament negotiations including through its various name changes the CCD received instructions from and reported to the UN General Assembly. The CCD like its two predecessors was chaired by the United States and Soviet Union. United Kingdom paperback‎
