Crociera mediterranea "Conte Biancamano", 30 aprile - 10 maggio 1933 A. XI. I fasci e la scritta sono impressi in oro. Il piatto posteriore reca impresso a secco lo stemma con il giglio di Firenze. La tessera è formata da due carte: il verso della prima reca la foto dell'intestatario (Umberto Dorini di Firenze). Conservati all'interno della tessera anche due biglietti di gite effettuate durante la crociera. Ottime condizioni.

First and only English edition, 12mo (170 x 115 mm), [2], x, 264pp., with half-title, 3 folding engraved plates, a clean copy with minimal browning, new endpapers, later full calf, retaining the original morocco label to spine. Luca Antonio Porzio (1639-1724), chief professor of medicine and anatomy in the Royal University of Naples. The English translation of Porzio's De Militis in castris sanitate tuenda, first published in Vienna in 1685 in Latin. It was published as a direct result of Porzio's presence in Venice in 1683 when the forces of the Ottoman Empire were laying siege to Vienna. The health of sailors is a short section, but on page 236 the author recommends keeping root vegetables in sand and fruit as juice "I am very certain, that the juices of fruits, as Oranges, Lemons, and Apples, might be boil'd to the consistence of a thick syrup or Rob, and preserved in proper vessels for any given times, so that a spoonful or more of it might occasionally be taken, dissolved in water, with very good effect, as a preservative against the bad consequences of such an animal diet as I have above taken notice of." KNOWLES (Sir Charles)
The Conduct of Admiral Knowles on the Late Expedition set in a True Light.
First edition, 8vo, 30pp., woodcut vignette on title, errata slip after title, folding map engraved by T. Jefferys of "La Rade de Basque" and a large folding engraved plate of "Fort de l'Aiguille, Fort Fouras and the Fort in the Island of Aix, and a Prospect of the Land about the Mouth of the River Charante, from Fort de la Aiguille to l'Isle Madame, taken art about 5 Miles distant", disbound pamphlet. Admiral Knowles was second in command with his flag in the "Neptune", under Sir Edward Hawke in the abortive expedition against Rochefort in 1757. Knowles's conduct and the conduct of the military commander, Lieutenant-General Sir John Mordaunt, provoked considerable criticism. Knowles was among those reproached for this failure and responded with a pamphlet, "The Conduct of Admiral Knowles on the Late Expedition Set in a True Light, 1758". This met with scant favour, and a notice of it in the Critical Review was so extreme that the editor, Tobias Smollett, was tried for libel and sentenced to a ?100 fine and three months imprisonment. He was superseded in his command and, though he retained his flag in the "Royal Anne", guardship at Portsmouth, he had no further active service in the English navy. Sabin, 38150; Goldsmith, 9428.

New edition, small folio, xii, 21, [1]pp., with list of subscribers, large folding engraved chart of Liverpool and Chester harbours, thirty-one engraved charts printed on thick paper, including four partly folding, untrimmed, outer margins lightly dust soiled, recent half calf, marbled boards, spine decorated in blind and gilt, red morocco title label, a nice copy. Originally published by Lewis Morris (1700-1765) and here updated by his son William with 7 additional charts. "Welsh poet, antiquary and surveyor. As a result of the numerous wrecks and casualties on the Welsh coast, the Admiralty instructed him in 1737 to undertake a new survey. Morris had surveyed the whole of the west coast of Wales by the declaration of war against France in 1744. But the work was fatally interrupted by lack of funds for the project. The partially completed work was published in 1748 as 'Plans of harbours... in the St. George's Channel. SHIPWRECK.
A Narrative of the Loss of H.M.S. Royal George, of 108 Guns, Sunk at Spithead, August 29th, 1782; with a Concise Account of Colonel Pasley's Operations on the Wreck in 1839 & 1840.
First edition, 12mo (112 x 65 mm), 80, [2]pp., advertisement leaf at end for relics from the wreck, wood-engraved portrait frontispiece and 3 plates, marbled endpapers, original morocco-backed wooden boards made from timbers of the wreck of the Royal George, boards split, but holding firm, edges gilt. The Royal George,108 guns, the oldest first-rate in the Navy, was anchored at harbour where she was hove down for minor repair. The officer of the day refused to heed a seaman who warned him that the ship was taking in water through the ports. The ship sank as she took in water, and went to the bottom with 1200 people on board, including 250 women and children; nearly 900 of them drowned, including Admiral Kempenfeldt. The Royal George was launched in 1751, and had served as the flagship for Anson, Boscawen, Hawke, Rodney, and Howe. Her hull was finally broken up by exploding gunpowder in 1839-41. (Huntress). After the recovery of the timbers from the wreck by Colonel Pasley, they were sold to E. & E.
