The main issue of this study is the contradiction between the position of the insane and insanity in the Abdülhamid¿s era and his charitable and protector Sultan image. Political representation of minorities in Greece and Turkey: Nationalism, reciprocity and Europeanization.
New English Paperback. Demy 8vo. (21 x 14 cm). In English. 512 p. Political representation of minorities in Greece and Turkey: Nationalism, reciprocity and Europeanization. What influences the political representation of minorities? Does a non-core group pursue a certain pattern of collective political behavior, or does it have the ability to alter it through struggle with other groups by calculating the existing opportunities and restrictions? This book addresses these important questions by focusing on the history of political representation of the Muslim-Turkish minority in Greece and the Greek-Orthodox minority in Turkey, two communities whose rights are linked to each other via the "reciprocity principle" written in the Lausanne Treaty, signed by two countries that have long-lasting conflicts. Drawing on presentation of related political history, systematic coding of parliamentary debates and works, minority and mainstream newspapers, and elite interviews, the author analyzes and explains ignored linkages between institutions, bilateral relations between Greece and Turkey, and the role of external factors that enable or constrain minority communities access to political life. This study which adopts a historical institutionalism approach and, by integrating theory of both comparative politics and international relations, shows how the minority groups political participation and the effectiveness of their representation has been determined by the triangle of the two states choice of nationalism, reciprocity and Europeanization policies, mainly argues that internal factors such as groups capability for competition and institutional features of the political system in the host-state mostly override states bilateral relations with the kin-state and international factors. As a result, for the Greek and Turkish case, the host-states generally pursue the policy of state-controlled involvement of their minorities in the political life, where the existence of the threatening kin-state and minority groups strong demographic features lead to avoidance of full assimilation and exclusion from political representation.

BURDURLU DERVIS MEHMED PASHA, (1765-1837); (Duty period: 1818-1820).
[AUTOGRAPH 'BUYURULDU' SIGNED OTTOMAN GRAND VIZIER on EARLY POSTAL ORGANIZATION BUDGET 'DEFTER'] [Harmancik qaza of Bursa city 'Menzil' budget manuscript paper and Turkish sadrazam signature and order with qadi signature].
Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) Original manuscript paper. Double elephant folio. (79 x 58 cm). In Ottoman script. Hegira: [1]233-[1]234 = Gregorian: 1818. Burdurlu Dervish Mehmed Pasha, who was grand vizier held office under Mahmud II between the years of 1818-1820. Dervis Mehmed Pasa had gained a reputation among the 'vüzerâ' (Grand-viziers) would be the grand vizier as previously planned by Sultan Mahmud II according the 19th-century historian of Sânîzâde. He dealt with like cases the Aleppo revolution, confusions in Diyarbekir and Çildir, conquest of the Castle of Dir'iye, the center of the Wahhabis by Ibrahim Pasha, the son of Kavalali Mehmed Ali Pasha, the governor of Egypt and confusions in Sivas city. (Türkiye Diyanet Vakfi Islâm Ansiklopedisi). Buyuruldu (or Buyrultu, Buyurildi, Buyurdu etc.) is the order of an Ottoman grand vizier, vizier, beglerbegi , defterdâr , or other high official to a subordinate. The term is derived from the word 'buyuruldi', it has been ordered, in which the order usually ends and which gradually developed into a conventional sign. Buyuruldus are of two main types: a) decisions written in the margin (der kenâr) of an incoming petition or report, often ordering that a fermân (firman) (or berât , etc.) be issued to a certain effect... (Brill, Encyclopedia of Islam). "Menzils" were early post organization in the Ottoman Empire before Reform period. In the Ottoman Empire, every 35 kilometers - the distance one could travel in a day - on the main roads, there were buildings called "menzil" or "menzilhane" (destination, post station). Surrounded by walls, these yards had a hostelry, barn, market, bath and restaurant. Hosted at the complex for free, travelers shopped, took baths and fed their animals and continued their journeys the following day. At the complex, officials - registered and paid by the state - served the guests. Within time, menzils turned into bazaars where locals sold their products. Then, villages and towns started pop up around them. Commodities needed by the army for expeditions were preserved at menzils and soldiers were accommodated at these facilities if needed during expeditions. Mailmen operating between two faraway destinations changed their horses with those waiting at menzils and went on their route without losing time. (Source: Ekrem Bugra Ekinci). This huge sized budget paper (defter) written on paper with 'ahar'. Used black and red inks. It's written from Harmancik qaza (district) in Bursa vilayet (city) and sent to court of Istanbul for grand vizier confirmation. It's a budget defter of Harmancik 'menzil'. Apprx. 250-300 articles (registers) in notes as expenses like Tatar postmans, horses, Kütahya beglerbegi (beylerbeyi), qadis (judges) and other ones. At the end of registers, there is qadi signature (seal), qadi's name is Mehmed es-Seyyid Samed (?). He was probably Turkish judge in its period in that menzil of Bursa, Harmancik. Budget registers start as '[1]233 senesi Saban-i Muazzama'nin gurresinden [1]234 senesinin Saban-i Serif'inin menzil kuyudu'. Registers had been sent to the Ottoman court for approval from Bursa to Istanbul. Grand vizier's hand writing is in 'diwanî' script. An extremely rare autograph manuscript about the earliest postal history as well.

BURSALI KAYMAKAM MEHMED NIHAD BEY, (1886-1928).
[GREECE, THE ARCHIPELAGO, MEDITERRANEAN SHORES OF NORTH AFRICA, AND WEST ANATOLIA] [Plan of Greece showing the Second Battle of Çatalca].
Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) Original b/w map. 70x57 cm. In Ottoman script. Folded. No scale info. A huge plan showing The Second Battle of Çatalca fought between 03 February 1913 and 03 April 1913 was a major "continuous skirmish" of the First Balkan War. The battle consisted of a series of thrusts and counter-thrusts by both the Ottomans and the Bulgarians. On 20 February the Ottomans, in coordination with a separate attack from Gallipoli, charged the Bulgarian positions. Although the Bulgarians repulsed the initial attack, they were weakened enough that they withdrew over fifteen kilometers to the south and twenty kilometers to the west to secondary defensive positions; but eventually the lines returned to essentially the originals. The separate siege of Edirne resulted in its loss to the Bulgarians on 26 March, sapping Ottoman morale; and with heavy Bulgarian losses to both fighting and cholera, the battle dwindled down and ceased by 3 April 1913. On 16 April a second ceasefire (armistice) was agreed to, ending the last fighting in the war. Lieutenant Colonel Mehmet Nihat Bey of Bursa who was born in 1886 accomplished to write 39 books about military history which are including his war experience and his translation works. Nihat Bey who is the first and the most important military historian in the Republic of Turkey was an intellectual person rather than a soldier. He meticulously evaluated many mistakes and points should learn about war by an objective eye in his works. Although it passed a century from the time these books had been written this great person couldn't have been totally discovered by researchers yet. The first military historian in the Republic of Turkey Mehmet Nihat Bey, participated in Tripoli, Balkan, Gallipoli, and the Turkish War of Independence. He taught in a military academy for many years and he impressed many staff officers in terms of idea. During the first years of the republic era in Turkey he lectured about military history and until the last year before he died he had given so useful pieces of information in the warfare of Çanakkale for visitors. Nihat Bey evaluated the conditions about the period of his life and the wars he participated by an objective view and he left great materials for the next generations succeeding him. He enlightened Turkish recent history by writing the events which he had witnessed. Studies of Nihat Bey have an important impact on the researchers who want to have knowledge about Balkan and Gallipoli wars which fulfilled their 100th anniversary.

Music publications from Ottoman Empire up today, 1876-1986.= Osmanli Imparatorlugu'ndan günümüze belgelerle müzik (nota) yayinciligi, 1876-1986. "Publications of music is an enlightened part of our history of music. The subject was not considered as a whole, various important writings appeared on magazines stayed scattered, and the dpcuments were not collected. This book is the first step taken on this subject. The publication houses which mostly cannot be remembered in our days our presented for interests in this book depending on the notescores and other documents. And so, the untrue argument stating that the first publications of Turkish music were realized by the minorities is falsified and the line of progress of the Turkish music publications which began with Haci Emin Efendi in 1876, is put together the first time according to the documents, in chronological order.". This is still the best reference for not only history of Turkish / Ottoman classical music publications, but also collectible sheet musics.

Four centuries of diplomatic and economic relations between Turkey & the Netherlands, (1612-2012). In memory of Cornelius Haga. [With a CD]. This book (as well as the attached Istanbul Memoirs of the First Dutch Ambassador Cornelius Haga and the Ottoman Empire¿s official records and his Register Book about his activites in Istanbul) is a very timely contribution to the field, which once again illustrates the importance of studying the Ottoman history as world history. Halil Inalcik, Bilkent University. This book provides a fresh interpretation of the historical relations between these two important powers and also Turkey-Europe relations. In the foreword, Halil INALCIK, a prominent global historian, underlines the joint Ottoman-Dutch role in shaping the European and the World history. In the following chapter, Levent KIRVAL focuses on the history of the economic and political relations between Turkey and the European powers, and he particularly focuses on the economic and cultural interactions between the Turks and the Europeans. Subsequently, Bülent ARI, first gives brief information about the phases of Dutch revolt which started in 1567 against the Spanish oppression and then evaluates the political atmosphere of the period and the conflicts between the European states. Next, Mustafa GÜLEC evaluates the interpretations of various scholars concerning the early Ottoman-Dutch relations and gives an overall atmosphere of the commercial relations of individual entrepreneurs before the grant of Dutch capitulations. Followingly, Mehmet BULUT focuses on the commercial activities in the Mediterranean in the 17th and 18th century. Consequently, Mehmet TÜTÜNCÜ has an interesting chapter under the title "Grand Dutch Admiral Michiel Adriaenszoon de Ruyter¿s Mediterranean Expedition and the Peace Treaties He Concluded in 1662 with Ottoman Algeria".
