Adverse weather conditions prolonged a Mediterranean cruise that was initially meant to last only four days: ""Mais comme la caractérisation de cette croisière depuis que nous avons quitté la Provence est le coup de vent qui dure trois jours puis 1 jour de calme et de nouveau 3 jours de vent nous travaillons 1 jour et tachons de nous abriter qq. part pendant les 3 mauvais. Et cela peut durer longtemps ainsi."" The explorer nevertheless found some interest in this navigation disrupted and made difficult by the weather: ""Par ailleurs notre tournée n'a pas manqué de charme l'Orient en a toujours mais ce sale temps l'a empêché probablement d'être aussi fructueuse qu'elle aurait pu l'être le temps parce qu'il va falloir songer au retour."" If Valincourt's work is rather laborious paraphrasing the novel with the aid of a realist postulate and questioning the psychological stylistic and narrative possibilities it nonetheless remains that we have few documents of this kind: a contemporary testimony on an emblematic book of French literature. The Lettres chinoises inaugurated by the same author as the Lettres juives have this typical Enlightenment design of comparing the customs and habits of several civilizations; the work takes up the scheme always humorous of the first work of this type: L'espion de la cour de Marana then Montesquieu's Lettres persanes. A Chinese narrator writes to his compatriots from different places in Europe Moscow Stockholm Paris. The work is always supposed to make us question the strangeness of our own thoughts and customs. D'Argens also describes several journeys to the Orient with interesting information on the customs and institutions of Oriental countries. Like the Lettres cabalistiques or Jewish letters by the same author the Lettres chinoises were published in periodicals. The philosophical dreams numbering twenty accounts of dreams are authentic utopias; the first tells of a land inhabited and governed by monkeys Singimanie; the second takes a monkey and the narrator to the Changijournes a people who continually change their clothes and fashion. The Lettres juives are Boyer d'Argens' first literary contribution after his military career and his most remarkable book for its imagination and verve. The work was originally a periodical with letters appearing regularly. A Jewish traveler in Europe shares his observations and reflections with his Jewish friends following a model quite popular at the time and first employed by Marana in L'espion turc in 1684 then by Montesquieu in the Lettres Persanes in 1721. The whole gives rise to an elegant satire of society and customs of the period. Volume V is dedicated to Sancho Panza the sixth to the barber of Don Quichotte. Nevertheless a thoroughly philosophical and critical wind blows through the work and it is the breath of the Enlightenment the same found in the spirit of Diderot and Voltaire which questions the perception of things opinion and truth. Of the three parts that were to appear successively only this one was published Le Menestrier's death having put an end to this work. The work was not even put on sale; the author only distributed a few copies around him. It is therefore very rare to come across this edition. The 1642 edition entitled Medales illustrées des anciens Empereurs et Impératrices de Rome is the same work to which the publisher Paillot added the Médailles des impératrices from a manuscript he had purchased from the heirs. Jean-Baptiste Le Menestrier antiquarian should not be confused with the heraldist Claude François Menestrier who died in 1704. Half blonde calf binding ca 1820. In the epistle the author confesses his motivations in writing this novel: a Jewish usurer having deceived him during his military period he claims to paint here an honest Jew. The work is in fact a libertine novel recounting the loves of the Count de Vaxere initially destined for the ecclesiastical state. Love for a Venetian Jewish woman will lead him to conversion. Spine with five raised bands decorated with gilt compartments and fleurons as well as green morocco volume labels. Boards decorated with triple gilt fillets. Leading edges and headcaps decorated with double gilt fillets. Gilt dentelles framing the pastedowns. All edges gilt. Very handsome copy in a highly decorative set. Author of playful poetry often libertine and light well-crafted and amusing which enjoyed great success his works were first collected in 1711 then in 1746 shortly after his death in 1743. They saw many reissues. The fourth volume consists of attributed pieces. A good example of this poetry: ""Le bègue. Un bègue voulait d'une dame/ Les bonnes graces acquérir/ Et lui prouver l'ardente flamme/ Dont l'amour le faisait mourir. / Etant au bout de sa harangue/ Ne pouvant plus mouvoir sa langue/ Il eut recours à son outil;/ Puis le montrant et des yeux et du geste:/ Madame excusez-moi dit-il/ Le porteur vous dira le reste."" New edition of the Système de la nature after the rare first edition of 1770 and first edition of Helvetius's work at the same date of 1774 as this new edition of Mirabaud; in reality three editions appeared at the same date with different collation without being able to determine if there is a true first edition. Contemporary full marbled sheep binding. Richly decorated smooth spine. Red morocco title label and black morocco volume label. Red edges. Tail headcaps torn away. A brown stain on the upper board of volume I. Restoration using a piece of leather on the upper board of volume II. Fairly good copy. Helvetius's work is an exegesis and examination of the Système de la nature the author seems to have condensed the material in the form of maxims and assertions all resting on a strong materialist creed. We now know that the work may not be by Helvetius although we recognize his philosophy in it. As for Mirabaud's Système de la nature it was received like a bombshell in literary circles and ultimately quite poorly received by the philosophers. His paintings are preserved at the Uffizi in Florence and in several French museums. When in December 1775 Sade left Rome for Naples he was welcomed by the son-in-law of his friend Doctor Mesny Jean-Baptiste Tierce who at that time was receiving commissions from Cardinal de Bernis. He found lodging for the Marquis ""who intended to see everything in the region learn about everything judge admire criticize love hate in short to give free rein to that insatiable and passionate curiosity which led him into museums galleries churches palaces and libraries as well as into grottos vaults catacombs and even into the bowels of volcanoes. He was not content to contemplate works of art ancient or modern monuments; he also observed customs politics religion administration social life. The beauty of women worldly customs the quality of entertainments ways of eating drinking dressing praying conducting oneself in society: nothing left him indifferent. He wanted to grasp all the present and all the past of this civilization to embrace it entirely in a single and universal vision. A massive undertaking to match his extraordinary imagination which he was however unable to fulfil it being impossible for him to do so. This was however the nature of his central ambition as a writer: grandiose and outsized. With a view to this great work Sade took hurried notes at the side of the road or in hostelries which he then complemented with notes from his correspondents Mesny and Iberti. Thus he built up the monument he intended to put before the public but which did not end up seeing the light of day until the 20th century. Jean-Baptiste Tierce was a close collaborator: he re-read Sade's notes and gave his observations on the little notebooks with numbers referring to the works mentioned. Sade took the greatest notice of his views. Often the painter accompanied him on his rambles sketchbook in hand drawing the buildings and landscapes before them.
