ST. JOHN'S NEWFOUNDLAND 1883. On offer are a super pair 2 18th Century manuscript letters describing one American's summer trip to St. John's Newfoundland. "Everything is up or down hill in this town & it is a fruitful field for the cobbler" states the author in this handwritten letter signed "J. J. Halsey". Halsey. The first on four pages two conjoined sheets 8 x 5 in. dated St. John's Newfoundland Canada July 20 1883 writes to his colleague Professor John H. Hewitt. In full: "I have found a place where it is always cool & where fever & ague i.e. malaria cometh not. I have been here three days & during that time the skies here have been clear with no hint of fog & the temperature has ranged from 70 degrees in the noonday to the lower sixties at night. I am delighted with this place as a summer retreat & would advise one who wishes to escape the heat--& isn't afraid of an ocean run of a few days to come here." "The town lies beautifully on a land locked harbor completely shut in from the storms of the Atlantic while from the range of hills which shuts it in--opening only 600 feet for an ocean gateway--rising to nearly 600 feet one has a grand view of the ocean below & of the rugged cliffs on every hand while the vale in which St. John's lies forms a milder background. Everything is up or down hill in this town & it is a fruitful field for the cobbler. The only drawback is that there is no good hotel the present public being cared for in boarding houses. I find the one where I am very fair however. Our three days' run from New York to Halifax was a delightful one--with a smooth sea & no fog. From Halifax to Cape Race fog all the way--for three days--& a heavy sea running which made things uncomfortable. I was not sick but supremely uncomfortable. Mrs. Hewitt's generous table had unfitted me for roughing it & our boat's fare was simply execrable while the lack of any deck accommodation in the way of shelter made a sojourn on deck very unpleasant." "I have made very pleasant acquaintances here through a letter of introduction to Rev. Moses Henry a retired Presbyterian clergyman the patriarch & historian of Newfoundland. I sail tomorrow night for a three weeks' absence on the Labrador coast. I shall go as far north as Nain--in latitude 56 degrees 30' a station of the Moravian missionaries among the Esquimaux. I shall see nature unadorned--and men too. The visit to Williamstown was a delightful week of doing nothing but what I pleased in a luxurious way & I expect when roughing it on the Labrador to look back to it with longing. I took a fancy to young Ballard ; possibly "Bolland". He wanted to come along with me. I wish he had. I should enjoy it better with company. I didn't invite you for I know you wouldn't relish this kicking about in dirty boots. I hope we shall after all see Mrs. Hewitt in Lake Forest this fall. With kind regards to all Mrs. Hewitt Helen & yourself & a kiss for Theo. I am." Letter 2 on Lake Forest University letterhead writes on 3 of the 4 pages much the same dated Septermber 19th regarding Newfoundland and Labrador with a wrap up of his trip and then details of the new school year starting. c1904 THREE 3 ORIGINAL HANDWRITTEN FIELD BOOKS OF THE EXTENSIVE DETAILED AND PLANNED WORK REQUIRED TO REBUILD THE TOWN OF ABERDEEN WASHINGTON AFTER IT HAD BURNT TO THE GROUND A YEAR EARLIER
ABERDEEN WASHINGTON WA. Good. 1904. On offer are three 3 original field books most probably written in 1904 and detailing the rebuilding of the city of Aberdeen Washington after a raging fire destroyed the town. On October 16 1903 a raging fire destroyed 140 buildings in the center of Aberdeen Washington. A city constructed primarily of wood including sidewalks Aberdeen had little chance of stopping the fire once it began to spread. Obviously the city needed to rebuild its streets after the fire. Two people one by the name of Weatherwax and the other by the name of Benn seem to have been hired to do the task. Weatherwax is most probably J.M. Weatherwax or George Weatherwax two men who owned a large lumber company in Aberdeen and Benn is most probably Samuel Benn. The three books are labelled P-138 book 44 P-214 book 105 and P-215 book 106. Each book contains an index at the beginning which lays out what streets in the city are written about. For example book P-215 deals with information on old planks new elevations storm sewers street levels and more on the 20 different street including Michigan Ave Jefferson St. Washington St. and more. The books are excellent artifacts of city construction from the early 20th century containing dozens of pages of detailed schematics drawings charts and figures for the city of Aberdeen in the wake of its destruction. There are approximately 450 handwritten pages over the three books. The books each measure 7 ¼ by 4 ¼ inches. All three show sustained use and strong wear. For the most part the structural integrity is still there however the last book P-215 shows the most wear with parts of the book disconnected from the binding. Two of the books shows evidence of taping to the spine and boards. These books are a fascinating look at the intricacies and details of rebuilding a city after its destruction and an intimate part at the history of Aberdeen Washington a place that Kurt Cobain would eventually call home. Background: On October 16 1903 a fire destroys 140 buildings in the center of Aberdeen. Fed by wood-frame structures wooden sidewalks and sawdust fill the fire rages unchecked until some 20 acres have burned. The fire will spur the city leaders to enact a more stringent fire code. On the morning of October 16 1903 a resident of the Arctic Hotel began making breakfast in his room. An accidental fire started and the room was quickly engulfed in flames killing the lone occupant. AUBURN NEW YORK NY 1865. On offer is an interesting original manuscript letter dated December 16 1865 Auburn New York handwritten by J.M. Hammons wherein he describes him work at the state prison believed to be the Auburn Correctional Facility. Mr. Hammons writes his friend Hosea Edgerly a chatty warm letter describing in short his work overseeing the prisoners in the shoe department his happiness with the easy work conditions but particularly interesting is Hammons subtle reference to the Civil War mentioning working for 'Uncle Samuel' in North and South Carolina in the army and pondering on how lucky he was to come home safely stating 'only those who have been soldiers can form a correct idea of what the soldier has to endure.' The author writes of a job opportunity in Detroit but prefers Auburn now feeling like home and he urges his friend to visit and more. The 8" x 6" paper folded to make four 4 pages has two 2 fold creases light general fading and overall is VG. Very Good. 32mo - over 4" - 5" tall. Manuscript. unknown

Printer's device with the tree on the title page. Full-margined copy entirely ruled in red. Privilege dated 17 January 1557. Reused binding in full cream vellum probably from the 17th century. In his Hymne au Roy du Bellay praises the Duke of Guise who retook Calais from the English on 8 January 1558 after a week's siege and the death of two hundred Englishmen. Let us recall that Calais had been in English hands since 1347. Other poets would describe the successes of this enterprise in odes such as Jean Dorat 1505-1588 or Michel de l'Hospital ca. 1506-1573. Following the hymn one finds a patriotic poem: ""evocation of the tutelary gods of Guynes"". This last was a small fortress that defended Calais and which fell with that city. The pamphlet ends with ""Exécration sur l'Angleterre et un Sonnet à la Royne d'Escosse"". Handsome copy of this publication in which like other poets of the Pléiade Joachim Du Bellay rises to the rank of militant court poet. Fédéric Morel hardcover

BANGOR MAINE ME. Very Good. 1879. On offer is an interesting completely filled 1879 manuscript diary and relic of Bangor Maine handwritten by Joanna S. Eveleth unsigned but identified from other ephemera the free-endpaper has the signature of her father A.S. Eveleth Bangor a hardworking but ill young woman who besides all the everyday chores a 20 something woman might have also taught school. The diary opens with Joanna at normal school taking exams in arithmetic grammar and geography studying a lot fixing her clothes going on an occasional sleigh ride etc. On one page she says School is the only interesting part of my life but a day or so later she complains there is nothing but school and study and nothing wonderful has happened. By mid-February she is summoned home where both parents and several other relatives are ill. From that point on the diary is filled with entries about the local weather various chores around the house visits to and from various friends and relatives letters written and received etc. By the time she's been home for two weeks she has decided to stay at home this spring rather than return to school although Father tries to convince her to return. On March 6 she receives a letter saying 'I was elected to N. Bangor school as teacher. I did not know that such a thing had been thought of'. Until mid-April when school starts she does housework visits friends attends church prayer meetings and sociables and complains of exhaustion. Once school starts Joanna's entries don't change appreciably. She tells nothing about her students or her school day other than such lines as School and nothing else; and 'the day has gone much like all others'. She does however say I'm glad I'm not a dressmaker. I'd rather be a schoolmarm. In addition to teaching doing the usual washing chores sewing dresses for herself and several others and general housecleaning she also writes of going strawberrying or picking apples gathering autumn leaves making a wreath and reading sometimes aloud in the evenings to the boys including Uncle Tom's Cabin. Croquet is a favorite game and she also mentions playing dominoes. Joanna is not in very good health writes frequently of her tiredness and mentions fainting or almost-fainting several times. She's also not particularly cheerful reporting that she spent one of the happiest days of my life walking to the schoolhouse doing something involving music and playing croquet. She deals with two dramatic interludes in typically laconic style noting on 8/11 that 'Oh such a day has past sic. Father went to work but
in an hour
he was back with a broken leg. Both bones below the knee are broken. The Dr. says it is very bad. The neighbors are kind the family pitches in and father is up using crutches in the field by October'. Another major event is reported in typical undramatic Joanna style. She is a master of understatement: 11/18. Snowed all day. Washed. Father and mother came. Uncle Ralph is dead. 11/19. It was a mistake. Uncle is not dead but very low. 11/24. Went downtown. Uncle is dead. He died last Thursday. Funeral is Wednesday. 11/25. Father and Mother went downtown. Uncle's corpse came this morning. Uncle N. and Aunt L. are here. 11/26. The last has been done for uncle. He was buried today. 11/27. Thanksgiving. I work all day and am getting ready to go away on an overnight visit. Again typically Joanna's entry for her 23rd birthday on 9/16 reads: So I'm twenty-three. Have celebrated by teaching all day
.The school Committee were in today. Rainy'. This diary presents a poignant picture of the life of a young schoolteacher in Maine. Bangor Northport and other towns are mentioned. It is comforting to know that according to genealogical material available on-line Joanna married William H. Teelingin 1889 when she was 33 and had 2 children. She died in 1911 five years before her son died from a botched surgery when he was thrown from a colt. Contemporary beige morocco spine elaborately decorated in gilt sides with central gilt armorial stamps full quartered arms on the lower plate boards elaborately framed in gilt using the same tools as the spine with gilt cornerpieces gilt edges traces of laces. Upper spine restored as well as spine-ends. Brown stain to second board 1cm in diameter. Leaf 553 a hole to the lower margin a few pale traces of foxing some rubbed spots. A very fine copy in an elaborately decorated early 17th-century Italian armorial morocco binding with the arms of the Duke of Magenta Alfonso Brentano. The Panarion is a curious encyclopedia of mental illnesses viewed as immoral behavior and classified according to biblical vices and virtues.
