England United Kingdom Great Britain. Good with no dust jacket. 1825. Non-Book. On offer is a clipping from an envelope mailed in 1825. Written is London March 10 1825 To John Purchas Esq From C Manners Cambridge preserved on a paper sheet paired with a printed summary of Lord Charles Somerset Manners. Below is signed M. P. For Cambridge and Bro. To D. Of Rutl likely - Brother to Duke of Rutland. This piece bears a circular date stamp FREE postmark with the 1825 date. In the early 1800s British MPs and certain nobles could send and receive mail without postage under a system known as "Franking". These letters would be marked with a FREE postmark often in red or black ink and were hand-signed by the MP or peer to validate the privilege C. Manning in this instance. General Lord Charles Henry Somerset Manners KCB 24 October 1780 25 May 1855 was a British soldier and nobleman the second son of Charles Manners 4th Duke of Rutland and Lady Mary Somerset. He was lieutenant colonel of the 3rd Hussars in 1815 during the Waterloo campaign. After a brief appointment to the colonelcy of the 11th Regiment of Light Dragoons he was transferred to the colonelcy of the 3rd King's Own Regiment of Dragoons which he retained until his death in 1855. He served as MP for Cambridge from 1802-1830. This document measures 4-½ x 3 inches has a torn right edge of the backing paper with some writing seemingly lost and demonstrates age toning with minor discolouration. England. Very Good with no dust jacket. 1856. Non-Book. On offer is a rare letter written and signed by Lord Richard Bickerton Pernell Lyons 1st Viscount Lyons. Letter measures 6-1/4 x 4-1/2 inches. Autograph letter signed. One page. Dated Norfolk House April 21st 1856. Sending a gift to "dear Caroline." . Very good condition. Lord Lyons whose full name is Richard Bickerton Pernell Lyons 1st Viscount Lyons was a British diplomat with fifty years of service to the British Foreign Office. He was Ambassador to the United States 1858-1865 during the Civil War and was key in the "Trent affair" which established Lyons' lasting reputation. In the autumn of 1861 the Confederacy sent two envoys James Mason and John Slidell to Europe to try to secure formal recognition. They traveled on the neutral British mail steamer Trent. A Union warship intercepted the Trent and seized the envoys outraging British opinion. Public excitement over the affair grew so intense that war between Britain and America seemed for a time unavoidable. Through tact and firmness Lyons was largely responsible for the avoidance of open war between the two countries persuading the reluctant United States government to release the envoys. The author Raymond A. Jones in his work The British Diplomatic Service 1815-1914 has stated unequivocally that Lyons' handling of the "Mason-Slidell affair . Established his well-deserved reputation as Britain's greatest mid-century ambassador." Loudon writer on botany and magazine editor who when production of her husband's Arboretum 1838 saddled the family with debts of £10000 turned again to authorship and tapped the ready Victorian market for books popularizing horticulture botany and natural history. Instructions in Gardening for Ladies 1840 was hugely successful; 1350 copies were sold on the day of publication alone. The Ladies' Flower-Garden of Ornamental Annuals 1840 the first in a much-reprinted series of informative illustrated books was followed by others about bulbs greenhouse plants and perennials. One of the most desirable of this series and extremely uncommon with the cloth binding preserved. The Lindley Library copy of the second edition has a different publisher. Interestingly Noel Humphreys' obituary in The Garden vol. 18 1881 p. xii names Humphreys as the artist for the Ladies' fFower-garden series. Second edition. Cloth. Very Good.
