Atlas with title list of plates 14 engraved plates & large folding engraved map. Text volumes are small octavo 7¾" x 4½" 19th century quarter calf & boards spines tooled in gilt morocco lettering pieces; atlas is quarto 11" x 7½" in period tree calf spine tooled in gilt. Translated by J Castéra. Howes S-117 First French Edition.

Martin Sauer was an English civil servant who knew Russian French and German. He became acquainted with Joseph Billings in St Petersburg in the 1780s. He agreed to join Billings expedition as his secretary and interpreter. It was agreed that he would write the official account but there is some controversy about his actives when he returned to St Petersburg in 1794. It has been suggested that he left hurriedly for England with much of the important archival material from the voyage including diaries and secret reports so that he could publish a record of the expedition before Russian authorities and scholars in the Academy of Sciences could review its details. Sauer's An account of the Geographical and Astronomical Expedition to the Northern Parts of Russia was published in London in 1802. It contains an abundance of detail about eastern Siberia and the Aleutian Islands and records the expeditions visits to Kodiak Island Prince William Sound and the coast south as far as Yakutat Bay.

The chart was made by Aaron Arrowsmith from Sauer's notes and Billings observations and the whole complements well the other contemporary accounts of the expedition by the cartographer Gavriil Sarychev and the naturalist Carl Heinrich Merck. Aaron Arrowsmith 1750–1823 was an English cartographer engraver and publisher and founding member of the Arrowsmith family of geographers. He moved to Soho Square London from Winston County Durham when about twenty years of age and was employed by John Cary the engraver and William Faden. He became Hydrographer to the Prince of Wales ca. 1810 and subsequently to the King in 1820. In January 1790 he made himself famous by his large chart of the world on Mercator projection. Four years later he published another large map of the world on the globular projection with a companion volume of explanation.

Condition:

Some rubbing and wear to coves of both atlas and text volumes some chipping to spine ends small gouge at back of atlas and stamp to front end paper else in very good condition. ‎Nuix y de Perpina Juan de 1740 1783‎

‎Reflexiones imparciales sobre la humanidad de los Españoles en las Indias contra los pretendidos filósofos y políticos. Para ilustrar las historias de MM Raynal y Robertson‎

‎lii315 pages. Octavo 8" x 5 3/4" bound in full leather with gilt lettering to spine. Translated with notes by Pedro Varela y Ulloa. Palau 196692. First Spanish edition.

A text that engaged the well-studied debates about the natural history of the Americas and Spain's colonial history. In 1780 in Venice Juan Nuix published Riflessioni imparziali supra l'umanita degli spagnuoli nell' Indie contro i pretersi filosofi e politici. Nuix a Catalan living in Italy since the expulsion of the Jesuits wrote the book to defend Spanish colonialism and historiography against the attacks of Robertson and Raynal. It sailed by the censors in the Council of the Indies and two separate translations appeared in succession one in 1782 edited by a member of the Royal Council Pedro Varela y Ulloa and another in 1783 by Joseph Nuix Juan's brother. The Spanish edition sponsored by the crown opened with an essay by Varela y Ulloa in which he first offered a searing Critique of traditional forms of colonialism not unlike that put forth by Raynal. After describing military campaigns in foreign lands from Alexander the Great to Genghis Kahn as butcheries Varela y Ulloa went on to claim that the Spanish colonialism was unique. The crimes attributed to Spain in the Indies had been committed by private individuals who did not represent the nation as a whole and who had acted as they did while surrounded by hungry cannibals. Moreover compared with the atrocities committed by other European colonial powers the actions of the Spaniards looked like misdemeanors. Varela y Ulloa's effort to portray Spanish colonialism as unique benign captured the essence of Nuix's thesis well. Nuix's defense of the record of Spanish colonialism opened with passages that sought to bolster his credibility by stressing that he was a Catalan and that Catalans had not really participated in the Spanish colonization of the Indies so that he could not be accused of being partisan. He then articulated a five-pronged defense of Castilian colonial behavior in America seeking to demonstrate the unreliability of the sources used by Robertson and Raynal and of their interpretations. Nuix First set out to prove that charges of Spanish cruelty to Amerindians were exaggerations originally put into circulation by writers such as Las Casas whose reports on the destruction of the Indies were at the root of most foreign criticisms of Spain. According to Nuix Las Casas was of Flemish origin which explained why he had sought to undermine Spain. Las Casas also often contradicted himself Nuix argued no impartial jury could trust such "an inept" witness. Foreign historians who had echoed Las Casas's allegations were not credible either not Robertson whose moderation had prompted him to dismiss Las Casas. Robertson had selected and reinterpreted the testimony of Spanish witnesses when recounting various colonial massacres. Instead of quoting them moreover Robertson had manipulated the testimony of witnesses to depict the Amerindians as passive victims of Spanish cruelty. History was not a matter of interpretation however but of faithfully presenting the testimony of witnesses and in that respect Robertson lacked credibility. In order to prove that Spaniards in America had not behaved like greedy barbarians Nuix argued that the alleged depopulation caused by the Conquest was the product of factors outside human control. The infantile susceptibility of the natives to disease for example was why epidemics had wiped them out. The barrenness of the Americas and the idleness of the originally small number of natives had moved the conquerors to create economies based on mining and large estates. Such economies along with the foreign monopoly on colonial trade not Spanish cruelty and greed Nuix contended were responsible for having slowed both markets and population growth.

Condition:

Provenance: Book plate of Alberto Parreño formerly president of the Cuban Chamber of Commerce in New York to front paste down.

‎Description:
2 volumes: 427 pages with facsimile title and index; 513 pages with two facsimile pages appendix and index. Royal octavo 9 1/2" x 7" bound in three quarter blue leather with raised spine bands and gilt lettering to spine. From the library of George M Foster. Second edition.

The two chronicles by Francisco de Burgoa easily hold first place for inflated style and bombastic phraseology especially the opening remarks to various chapters. Yet for the important area of Oaxaca and the numerous subjects he treats Burgoa's works are indispensable and irreplaceable sources. Burgoa born in Oaxaca was related to numerous local colonial families. He took his final vows in 1625 and by 1649 was provincial of his Order. In that post he made a special effort to visit various parts of Oaxaca especially seeking notices of Zapotecan antiquities with the aim of writing a history of Oaxaca. Before his death in 1681he did not complete it but left two prolix yet valuable published treatises. The two chronicles are the usually abbreviated Palestra historial and Geográfica descripción. Burgoa conceived of them as a single work but they differ in contents. The Palestra historial is a typical chronicle. It begins with the arrival in 1526 of Dominicans in Mexico City and shortly thereafter their appearance in Oaxaca. Burgoa rehearses the lives of many missionaries already biographized by Davila Padilla but Burgoa emphasizes their apostolate in the Oaxaca areas even before formal establishment of the Province of San Hipolito 1592. These lives are uniformly eulogistic but scattered through them are important bits of information on the numerous Indian groups of Oaxaca. The Geográfica descripción has 80 chapters. They detail the histories of the Monasteries and the work of their friars among the Indians with much less attention to biographical detail than in the Palestra historial. The data run to about mid-17th century in both. Handbook of Middle American Indians

George McClelland Foster Jr born in Sioux Falls South Dakota on October 9 1913 died on May 18 2006 at his home in the hills above the campus of the University of California Berkeley where he served as a professor from 1953 to his retirement in 1979 when he became professor emeritus. His contributions to anthropological theory and practice still challenge us; in more than 300 publications his writings encompass a wide diversity of topics including acculturation long-term fieldwork peasant economies pottery making public health social structure symbolic systems technological change theories of illness and wellness humoral medicine in Latin America and worldview. The quantity quality and long-term value of his scholarly work led to his election to the National Academy of Sciences in 1976. Virtually all of his major publications have been reprinted and/or translated. Provenance from the executor of Foster's library laid in.

Condition:
Some occasional pencil marginalia by Foster. Foster's date of acquired on front paste down of volume one. Some rubbing to extremities else a very good set. Archivo General de la Nacion hardcover books‎

‎Barlow Thomas Lord Bishop of Lincoln 1607a1691‎

‎Brvtvm fvlmen: or The bull of Pope Pius V. concerning the damnation excommunication and deposition of Q. Elizabeth : as also the absolution of her subjects of their oath of allegiance with a peremptory injunction upon pain of an anathema never to obe‎

‎a2-a6b-b7c-c7d-2315 pages. Small square octavo 7 ¾" x 6 ¼" bound in full leather. Second edition. Thomas Barlow 1607-1691 was an English academic and clergyman who became Provost of The Queen's College Oxford and Bishop of Lincoln. He was considered in his own times and by Edmund Venables writing in the Dictionary of National Biography to have been a trimmer a reputation mixed in with his academic and other writings on casuistry. His views were in fact Calvinist and strongly anti-Catholic and he was one of the last English bishops to identify the Pope as the Antichrist He worked in the 1660s for the 'comprehension' of nonconformists but supported the crackdown of the mid-1680s; and declared loyalty to James II of England on his accession having strongly supported the Exclusion Bill which would have denied the Catholic James the succession. Pope Pius V's response to Queen Elizabeth I of England assuming governance of the Church of England included support of the imprisoned Mary Queen of Scots and her supporters in their attempts to take over England "ex turpissima muliebris libidinis servitute". A brief English Catholic uprising the Rising of the North had just failed. Pius then issued a bull Regnans in Excelsis dated April 27 1570 that declared Elizabeth I a heretic and released her subjects from their allegiance to her. In response Elizabeth who had thus far tolerated Catholic worship in private now actively started persecuting them. Condition: Original bards with new period spine and red label with gilt lettering to spine corners rubbed and bumped else a good to very good copy. ‎Wright J. R‎

‎Manuscript Diaries of J. R. Wright Westfield Chautauqua County New York 1851 -1869‎

‎Soft cover. Very Good. eight volumes various sizes approximately 980 pages bound in limp-leather wallet style bindings minor wear to bindings else very good. Manuscript diaries of John R. Wright circa 1830-1880 a farmer and laborer in Westfield Chatauqua County New York. Westfield is in the section of western New York State popularly known as the "Burnt Over District" it is also a dozen miles from Lily Dale the birthplace of the modern Spiritualist movement. The Wright's were presumably one of the many families caught up in the religious fervor sweeping the area. The diary notes attendance on several occasions at Spiritualist meetings. Our diarist John R. Wright and his father James were two of about twenty-five people from Westfield that signed a petition in 1854 for the Spiritualist Newspaper asking Congress to appoint a "Scientific Commission to investigate certain physical and mental phenomena of questionable origin and mysterious import that have of late occurred in this country and in Europe." Wright's diary with its memoranda and cash account sections as well as in its entries helps to document the everyday life of a laborer and farmer in the "Burnt Over District" in the mid-nineteenth century. Particularly in the economic and social network of small town life in western New York State at this time.

paperback books‎

His research even included consultation with the increasingly well-known Japanologist Philipp Franz von Siebold who had lived on the Dutch island of Dejima for eight years before retiring to Leiden in the Netherlands. In 1852 Perry embarked from Norfolk Virginia for Japan in command of a squadron in search of a Japanese trade treaty. Aboard a black-hulled steam frigate he ported Mississippi Plymouth Saratoga and Susquehanna at Uraga Harbor near Edo modern Tokyo on July 8 1853. His actions at this crucial juncture were informed by a careful study of Japan's previous contacts with Western ships and what could be known about the Japanese hierarchical culture. He was met by representatives of the Tokugawa Shogunate who told him to proceed to Nagasaki where there was limited trade with the Netherlands and which was the only Japanese port open to foreigners at that time. Perry refused to leave and demanded permission to present a letter from President Millard Fillmore threatening force if he was denied. Perry ordered his ships to attack several buildings around the harbor to demonstrate US naval power. The Commodore was fully prepared for more hostilities if his negotiations with the Japanese failed and threatened to use unrestrained fire if the Japanese refused to negotiate. He sent two white flags to them telling them to hoist the flags when they wished a bombardment from his fleet to cease and to surrender. Perry's ships were equipped with new Paixhans shell guns capable of wreaking great destruction with every shell. The Japanese military forces could not resist Perry's modern weaponry; the term "Black Ships" in Japan would later come to symbolize a threat imposed by Western technology. Perry returned in February 1854 with twice as many ships finding that the delegates had prepared a treaty embodying virtually all the demands in Fillmore's letter. Perry signed the Convention of Kanagawa on March 31 1854 and departed mistakenly believing the agreement had been made with imperial representatives. The agreement was made with the Shogun the de facto ruler of Japan. On his way to Japan Perry anchored off Keelung in Formosa modern day Taiwan for ten days. Perry and crew members landed on Formosa and investigated the potential of mining the coal deposits in that area. He emphasized in his reports that Formosa provided a convenient mid-way trade location. Formosa was also very defensible. It could serve as a base for exploration as Cuba had done for the Spanish in the Americas. Occupying Formosa could help the US to counter European monopolization of the major trade routes. President Franklin Pierce declined the suggestion remarking such a remote possession would be an unnecessary drain of resources and that he would be unlikely to receive the consent of Congress. When Perry returned to the United States in 1855 Congress voted to grant him a reward of $20000 in appreciation of his work in Japan. Perry used part of this money to prepare and publish a report on the expedition in three volumes titled Narrative of the Expedition of an American Squadron to the China Seas and Japan. He was also advanced to the grade of rear-admiral on the retired list when his health began to fail as a reward for his services in the Far East.

Condition:

Wear and fading to cloth first volume rebacked; large map detached several others with stub tears and splitting to folds; light foxing else good to very good.
