Old bookseller's description affixed to front free endpaper; pages a bit wavy from storage in a humid environment but quite clean and sound. Very good. ‎LIST Of MEMBERS Of The CONSTITUTIONAL CONVENTION 1853‎

‎Boston: White & Potter Printers to the State 1853. 1st Printing. Age-toning at extremities. Fold-lines. Very Good. Broadside. Printed in 5 columns under the masthead with delegates listed under their appropriate county. Typographical border. 25-1/2" x 18-3/8"

"The Massachusetts Constitutional Convention of 1853 met in order to consider changes to the Massachusetts Constitution. This was the 3rd such convention in Massachusetts history held by delegates selected for the purpose: the first in 1779–80 had drawn up the original document while the second in 1820–21 submitted a number of articles to a popular vote resulting in the adoption of the first nine amendments and the rejection of a number of other proposals. The Constitutional Convention met at noon on Wednesday May 4 1853 at the State House in Boston. There were around 420 delegates. Every delegate was male. . After 72 days of work it adjourned sine die on Tuesday August 2 1853. The convention came up with eight proposals. On November 11 1853 the proposals of the Constitutional Convention were placed before the voters. Every single proposal including the new Constitution went down in defeat. . Although its ambitious proposals were all rejected the convention's work was not for nothing. A series of constitutional amendments passed over the next few years incorporated many of the same changes into the Constitution." Wiki. OCLC records just one holding institution: MHS. A rare broadside documenting the individuals who participated in this effort to modify the state's governance. White & Potter, Printers to the State unknown books‎

‎Autograph Letter Signed June 25th 1840 Canton Michigan to his sister Maria Dummerston Vermont on the Election of 1840‎

‎Manuscript. Very Good. quarto three page letter inscribed on a four page bi-folium formerly folded with splits along several folds remains of sealing wax Canton Michigan postal stamp else in good clean legible condition. An interesting letter with exceptional content on the election of 1840 and on the origin and significance of Harrison's Log Cabin and Hard Cider emblem: "I am pleased to hear of the zeal among the Whigs of V.T. I have great hopes of a favorable result. Your objection to the use we are making of the Log Cabin & Hard Cider emblem surprises me. I glory in it & deem that we are making just use of what was intended to sneer & ridicule us & our candidate. And besides it is a beautiful emblem of the purity & simplicity that should again prevail at the seat of Govt. where corruption riots in the treasury that are created by the tenants of Log Cabins. You must recollect that we are indebted to the Van Buren press for the watchword of L. Cabin & Cider. They said after the nomination in allusion to Harrison's imbecility & vanity that give him a pension of $ 2000 plenty of cider & a Log Cabin to live in & he would be contented - & again that the old ladies of Washington were making up a present of old clothes for him and requested contributions of old cloths shoes &c to send to the poor old General - such things were enough to arouse the feeling of every Whig & it has done so as well as many Democrats & when a whole nation are animated by the same feeling it must not be deemed "childish absurd ridiculous silly or immoral." And again the Whigs never wished to discuss or bring before the people his military life. It was forded upon them by wholesale charges of cowardice against Harrison"
books‎

‎Ellis Henry 1721 1806‎

‎
2 volumes. 182 pages with fold out frontispiece map and three additional folding engravings; 319 pages with seven folding engravings. half-titles in each title pages improperly marked first volume as second and vice versa. Duodecimo 6 1/2" x 3 1/2" bound in original publisher's full uniform contemporary French sponged calf with gilt-tooled spines. First French edition after the 1748 English edition.

Henry Ellis was a traveler hydrographer and colonial governor returned from Italy in 1746 just in time to find an expedition to search for a north-west passage on the point of sailing. He appears to have been in easy circumstances; his name stands in the list of subscribers to the north-west expedition and he had sufficient interest to get attached to it nominally as agent for the committee and really as hydrographer surveyor and mineralogist the expedition consisting of two vessels the Dobbs galley of 180 and California of 150 tons left Gravesend on 20 May 1746 joined the Hudson's Bay convoy in Hollesley Bay and finally sailed from Yarmouth on the 31st. They parted from the convoy on 18 June made Resolution Island on 8 July and after a tedious passage through Hudson's Straits rounded Cape Digges on 8 August and on the 11th 'made the land on the west side the Welcome in latitude 64° N.' Bad weather drove them to the southward and prevented their doing anything more that season. They wintered in Hayes River in a creek about three miles above Fort York where a quarrel with the agent of the Hudson's Bay Company gave an unwonted piquancy to the dark and weary days. They suffered much from scurvy the prevalence of which Ellis attributes to their having got two kegs of brandy from Fort York for their Christmas merrymaking and in a minor degree to the 'governor' not permitting the Indians to supply them with fresh provisions. On 29 May 1747 the ice broke up and they were able to warp to the mouth of their creek; on 9 June they got down to Fort York. There they were allowed to get some provisions and stores and on the 24th cleared the river and 'stood to the northward on the discovery'. On 1 July each of the two ships sent away her long-boat but owing apparently to some ill-feeling between the two captains without any prearranged plan for working in concert. The consequence was that they separately went over the same ground discovering naming and examining the several creeks and inlets on the west side of Hudson's Bay the double examination perhaps compensating for the confusion arising from the double naming. Before the season closed in they had satisfied themselves that the only possible exit from Hudson's Bay on the west must be through the Welcome and that very probably there was no way out except that on the east by which they had come in. The result may not seem much; but as it served to put an end to the idea that the passage must lie through Hudson's Bay it was at least so much gain to accurate knowledge. After 21 August the weather broke and they decided in council 'to bear away for England without further delay.' On the 29th they entered Hudson's Straits passed Resolution Island on 9 September and arrived at Yarmouth on 14 Octivwe. Ellis's share in the work of the expedition had really been very slender but the reputation of it has been commonly assigned to him by reason of the narrative which he published the following year under the title A Voyage to Hudson's Bay by the DobbsGalley and California in the years 1746 and 1747 for Discovering a North-West Passage 1748; a work which with many valuable observations on tides on the vagaries of the compass and on the customs of the Eskimos a people then practically unknown mingles a great deal of speculation on the certain existence of the passage on magnetism on fogs on rust and other matters all more or less ingenious but now known to be wildly erroneous. Such as it was the book commended its author to the scientific workers of the day and on 8 February 1748-9 he was elected a fellow of the Royal Society. Possibly in acknowledgment of his scientific labors but more probably by some family interest he was afterwards appointed successively governor of Georgia and of Nova Scotia from which employment he retired about 1770. He seems to have spent his later years as a wanderer on the continent was at Marseilles in 1775 and died at Naples on 21 January 1806.

Condition:

Some dark spot to spine else a very good copy.
Ballard Fils hardcover books‎

He entered the Society of Jesus on 25 November 1671. As professor of philosophy and especially while procurator of the Franco-Chinese mission he sought in a series of papers to awaken interest in the work of Christianizing Eastern Asia. In 1697 appeared at Paris his Lettres sur les progréz de la religion à la Chine. Apropos of Chinese Rites controversy he published among other things Histoire de l'édit de l'empereur de la Chine en faveur de la religion chrétienne avec un éclaircissement sur les honneurs que les Chinois rendent à Confucius et aux morts Paris 1698; and in the year 1700: Lettre à un Docteur de la Faculté de Paris sur les propositions déférées en Sorbonne par M. Prioux. Under the same date there appeared in Paris the Histoire des Isles Mariannes nouvellement converties à la religion chrétienne. The second part translated into Spanish by J. Delgado is found in the latter's Historia General de Filipinas Manila 1892. In 1702 Père Le Gobien published Lettres de quelques missionnaires de la Compagnie de Jésus écrites de la Chine et des Indes Orientales; this was the beginning of the collection soon to become celebrated under the title of Lettres édifiantes et curieuses écrites des missions étrangéres par quelques missionnaires de la Compagnie de Jésus. The first eight series were by Le Gobien the latter ones by Fathers Du Halde Patouillet Geoffroy and Maréchal. The collection was printed in thirty-six volumes duodecimo Paris 1703–76 and reissued in 1780-81 by Fathers Yves de Querbeux and Brotier in twenty-six volumes duodecimo omitting the prefaces. New editions appeared in 1819 1829–32 and 1838-43. One abridgment in four volumes octavo was entitled Panthéon Littéraire by L. Aimé Martin 1834–43. A partial English translation came out in London in 1714. The publication incited the Austrian Jesuit Stöcklein to undertake his Neuer Welt Bott about 1720 at first considered merely a translation but soon an independent and particularly valuable collection five volumes folio in forty parts substantially completing the Lettres Edifiantes.

This is a history of the Christian missions in the Marianas or Ladrones Islands in the north-western Pacific the principal island of which is Guam. Reprinted in the text are several letters from early missionaries Medina Clain Sanvitores &c. The Jesuit mission was established there by Diego Luis de Sanvitores. Father Le Gobien never visited the Mariana islands but based his account chiefly on the relations and letters of missionaries sent to him from Rome Spain the Netherlands etc. Includes a letter by P. Clain about the discovery of the Caroline Islands.

Condition:

Rebacked with original spine laid down provenance: Jesuit College library with old stamps to front free endpaper half title and title page else about very good. ‎Phillpotts Bertha Surtees Dame Bertha Newall 1877 1932 editor‎

‎The Life of the Icelander Jon Olfasson: Traveller to India Written by himself and completed about 1661 AD with a continuation by Another Hand up to his Death in 1679‎

‎2 volumes: xxxiv238pp with frontispiece and 2 other plates 3 maps of which 2 are foldouts1 chart and index list of works by the society at end; xxx290pp with frontispiece and 2 other plates and index. Octavo 9" x 6" issued in blue cloth with gilt lettering to spine and pictorial representation of the ship Victoria on the cover decorative blind stamp to covers. Translated and edited from the Icelandic edition of Sigfus Blondal by Betrtha S Phillpotts. Works issued by the Hakluyt Society Second Series Numbers 53 and 68. First edition.

The autobiography of Jon Olafsson Traveler to the Indies remained unprinted in Icelandic save for a few excerpts until 1908-9 when an edition by Sigfus Blondal Librarian to the Royal Library was published in Copenhagen by the Icelandic Literary Society. The text in this edition which was based on a scholarly collation of the extant MMS. has been implicitly followed in the English translation. The life of Jon Olafsson falls into three parts; or perhaps more properly since only the first two parts are written by himself into two parts and an appendix. The first part opening with his childhood and youth in the remote north-west of Iceland his voyage to England in 1615 and his brief stay in that country has for its main subject his experiences as gunner's mate in Copenhagen and on various Northern voyages in the service of King Christian IV. It is this part which is comprised in the present volume. The second part edited by the Hakluyt Society deals with Jon Olafsson's voyage to India in 1622 his life as a member of the Danish garrison in the fort at Tranquebaar and the voyage home in 1624-5 a terrible record of privation in a rudderless vessel; his stay with other survivors at Youghal in Ireland and his return to Copenhagen towards the end of the year which had seen Christian IV's ill-fated entry into the Thirty Years' War. The autobiographical part ends with his return to Iceland in the Spring of 1626. It is followed by an account of the remainder of his life probably composed by someone in the household of Magnus Magnusson sheriff of Isafjoro Jon's native country--possibly the sheriff himself--and ending with Jon's death in 1679 in his eighty-fifth year. This third part is of value for the full account of the raid on the Barbary corsairs on Iceland in 1627.

Condition:

Spine ends moderately rubbed volume II spine lightly sunned else a very good set. ‎Diaz del Castillo Bernal 1492 1585‎

‎The True History of the Conquest of Mexico By Captain Bernal Diaz del Castillo one of the Conquerors. Written in the year 1568‎

‎viii514 pages with frontispiece map. Quarto 10 1/2" x 8 3/4" housed in a custom slipcase. Translated by Maurice Keatinge. First English edition.Bernal Dïaz del Castillo was a conquistador who wrote an eyewitness account of the conquest of Mexico by the Spaniards under Hernan Cortes himself serving as a rodelero under Cortes. Born in Medina del Campo Spain he came from a family of little wealth and he himself had received only a minimal education. He sailed to Cuba in 1514 to make his fortune but after two years found few opportunities there. Much of the native population of the island had already been killed by epidemics and forced labor and in 1517 an expedition was sent to the smaller Caribbean islands to find alternative sources of labor. Dïaz joined this group under the command of Francisco Hernandez de Cordoba. It was a difficult venture and although they discovered the Yucatan coast by the time the expedition returned to Cuba they were in disastrous shape. Nevertheless Dïaz returned to the coast of Yucatan the following year on an expedition led by Juan de Grijalva with the intent of exploring the newly discovered lands. Upon returning to Cuba he enlisted in a new expedition this one led by Hernan Cortes. In this third effort Dïaz took part in one of the legendary military campaigns of history bringing an end to the Aztec empire in Mesoamerica. During this campaign Dïaz spoke frequently with his companions in arms about their experiences collecting them into a coherent narration. The book that resulted from this was Historia verdadera de la conquista de la Nueva Espana English: The True History of the Conquest of New Spain. In it he describes many of the 119 battles in which he claims to have participated culminating in the fall of the Aztec Empire in 1521.As a reward for his service Dïaz was appointed governor of Santiago de los Caballeros present-day Antigua Guatemala. He began writing his history in 1568 almost fifty years after the events described in response to an alternative history written by Cortes's chaplain who had not actually participated in the campaign. He called his book the Verdadera Historia True History in response to the claims made in the earlier work. Dïaz died in 1585 without seeing his book published. A manuscript was found in a Madrid library in 1632 and finally published providing an eye-witness account of the events often told from the perspective of a common soldier. Today it is one of the most important sources in understanding the campaign that led to the collapse of the Aztec Empire and the Spanish conquest of Mexico.Condition:Spine renewed with new period spine label and original boards which the corners and edges are heavily rubbed some foxing to early pages. Frontispiece map repaired. Custom made red slipcase with Japanese toggles and leather spine label in gilt lettering else about a very good copy in a near fine case.
