Mexico 1895. p 32 First and only edition.<br /><br />Rare atlas of photographs of the map of the region around Puebla southwest of Mexico City. Warren Heckrotte describes the atlas and the enterprise that produced it: "The Comision Geografica-Explordora was established by a decree of December 13 1877. It was directed to prepare a map of the Republic with all the scientific accuracy desirable. The region around the town of Puebla southwest of Mexico City was the first effort of the Commission. The surveying was done by astronomical determinations and triangulation. Between 1879 and 1882 the planned nine sheets lithographed in Mexico City were issued at a scale of 1:20000. Elevations are shown by contour lines. For this atlas the sheets were issued as photographs the maps reduced in scale to 1:50000. A photographic edition at the scale of 1:100000 was also issued. Other areas of the country were mapped. The ultimate goal was to produce a map of the country at a scale of 1:100000 in 1100 sheets. At the time the Commission closed shop in 1914 a little over 200 sheets had been completed. This mode of production suggests that a small number of these atlases were produced." Seven important documents with a scholarly introduction. Don Diego de Vargas Zapata Lujan Ponce de Leon was born to a family of conquerors whose history reflected much of the history of Spain. Lost to Spain and the Church since the Pueblo Revolt of 1680 New Mexico was believed to contain untold riches and minerals. Vargas was appointed Governor of New Mexico in 1690 and was determined to reconquer the lost territory. How he accomplished this is told here in documents - reports and letters - signed by Vargas himself and by his lieutenants and associates. Very Good. 4to - over 9¾ - 12" tall. xii 502 pp. Full and rich history of Ariccia and surrounding towns on the outskirts of Rome to the Southeast of the City by Castel Gandolfo the Papal Summer Residence. Ariccia is one of the most ancient cities in Italy dating to at least the ninth century B.C. This history concentrates mostly on the seventeenth and eighteenth century when it was ruled by the powerful Savelli Chigi family which produced one pope Alexander VII and built a grand residence in the town that has been used many a time as a movie set such as in Visconti's "Il Gattopardo" "The Leopard". While it is over two millenia since the town yielded to Rome's preeminence as a city Ariccia continued to be the next most important city in Lazio for long stretches of history owing to its propitious location on the Via Appia the first way station on the road between Rome and Naples and its pleasant salubrious climate in contrast to malalial Rome made it a favored resort for the powerful of Rome in prior centuries. This copy of the history a model of municipal histories in its day is very good. There is some light and occasional foxing yet little that could be considered disconcerting. The exception would be the four places where a prior owner presses leaves which left a residue and in one instance may have created a tiny wormhole type of hole. However the small amount of loss has no effect on readability where it occurred. The vellum has an attractive mottled almost tiger striped design. Book is tight. Occasional light pencil notes a word or two in each case affecting a handful of pages. Still a very good copy. <br/><br/> Presso I Lazzarini hardcover books

Third edition and the first to include the map. Bella Woolf 1877-1960 was the sister of author Leonard Woolf and sister-in-law of Virginia Woolf. Her second marriage was to the British colonial administrator Tom Southorn and she wrote both fiction and non-fiction drawing on her experiences at his various postings. This book which was first published in 1914 is considered the first pocked guide to the island. It provides detailed information for the traveler including practical information on train schedules auto and rickshaw rentals climate currency etc. as well as many suggested itineraries with considerable detail of the history and culture of each site. An introductory chapter discusses Caylon's history and the inhabitants and their occupations and mode of dress and an afterword offers Woolf's reflections on "life below the surface that is only skimmed by the tourist" with particular attention to the lives of women. Treaty Between the United States and the Rogue River Indians

The Rogue River Indians were not a single tribe but a conglomeration of several groups living in the Rogue River Valley of southwestern Oregon. This treaty was concluded by Indian Service Superintendent Joel Palmer on November 15 1854. According to Eberstadt it allowed the United States "to settle other Indian tribes on the Table Rock Reserve. In return the Rogue River Indians were to receive twelve horses one beef two yokes of oxen coats pants and shirts. The Indians both won and lost their shirts at the same time." Goodspeed states that "this treaty the Rogue River Indians relinquished their title to certain lands in the neighborhood of the Cascades." Both addressed to "My Dear Gilbert"; the contents typed and concerning the fate of their mutual investment in "The Studio" restaurant & bar in Havana. ".all the papers that I can find at the Studio have been forwarded to you at Cambridge Springs. The reason for this delay has been that I have been quite ill having had a toe amputated.You will see the Studio is improving. I have just made an arrangement with two Chinamen as cooks Spanish waiters however.this should finally put the place on a paying basis." adding handwritten ".I trust you will soon send me a good sized check as I need money desperately." The letter of December relates Smith's attempts to find buyers and leasors for the restaurant ".I am bothered to death by the bills of the place existing before you left some of which I have personally guaranteed.have also had a proposition from a Spaniard to take the restaurant.As a restaurant is always a dead loser except under very competent management this seems to me to be most advantageous.The quarantine has been taken off the camps here and business is much better."; continuing to ask for money. With the original mailing envelopes addressed to Mr. W.E. Gilbert. This venture was perhaps an attempt to meet the needs of the very large population of North Americans residing in Cuba after the Spanish-American War; many businesses opened especially in Havana including hotels bars and restaurants. In his book "On Becoming Cuban: Identity Nationality and Culture" By Louis A. Perez 2008 Univ. of North Carolina Press an individual named Edward E. Nelson opened the Studio restaurant in Havana in 1899 and was not very successful per the contents of these letters. Recent full calf with new endpapers original red spine label preserved three armorial ink stamps on the top edge of the text block. Tissue repair to first page of table of contents ocasional foxing and minor soiling in the margins; overall quite clean and sound. "Barrow accompanied Lord Macartney's mission to the court of China in 1792 as his private secretary and the present account.is one of the best illustrated English travels on China. The eight plates are from drawings by William Alexander who also accompanied the embassy and later published his own work. The strict exclusion of Europeans by the Chinese emperors had left China very much terra incognita to the western world well into the nineteenth century. Barrow was an excellent observer and the text contains a number of descriptions and illustrations of Chinese artifacts and novelties. Among these are a plate depicting musical instruments extensive renditions of Chinese melodies in western western notation and a long description with illustration of an abacus" Hill 62. Historian Michael Adas notes that Barrow "interspersed descriptions of his travels and personal experiences with lengthy discussions of varying aspects of Chinese culture.His judgments on the quality of Chinese life and material culture tended to be favorable at the beginning of his residence in China but grew more and more disparaging as time passed." Unlike Jesuit writers who praised the sophistication of Chinese science and culture Barrow argued that a once-great civilization had been on the decline since the fifteenth century providing "an implicit contrast between static past-minded backward China and the continually improving foreward-looking industrializing states of Europe Adas Machines as the Measure of Man pp 179-180. Rebacked in the 19th century leather retaining the original spine with raised bands and gilt decorative stamping and lettering to spine. Translated from the original Portuguese manuscripts by Jackim le Grande. First edition.<br /><br />Born in Lisbon he entered the Order of Jesus at the age of sixteen. In 1621 he was ordered as a missionary to India and in 1622 he arrived at Goa. With the intention of proceeding to Abyssinia whose Negus emperor Segued had been converted to Roman Catholicism by Pedro Páez he left India in 1624. He disembarked on the coast of Mombasa and attempted to reach his destination through the Galla country but was forced to return. In 1625 he set out again accompanied by Mendez the patriarch of Ethiopia and eight missionaries. The party landed on the coast of the Red Sea and Lobo settled in Abyssinia as superintendent of the missions in Tigre. He remained there until death deprived the Catholics of their protector the emperor Segued. Forced by persecution to leave the kingdom in 1634 Lobo and his companions fell into the hands of the Turks at Massawa who sent him to India to procure a ransom for his imprisoned fellow-missionaries. In this he was successful but could not induce the Portuguese viceroy to send an armament against Abyssinia. Intent upon accomplishing this cherished project he embarked for Portugal and after he had been shipwrecked on the coast of Natal and captured by pirates arrived at Lisbon. Neither at this city however nor at Madrid and Rome was any countenance given to Lobo's plan. He accordingly returned to India in 1640 and was elected rector and afterwards provincial of the Jesuits at Goa. After some years he returned to his native city and died there January 29 1678.<br /><br />Lobo wrote an account of his travels in Portuguese which appears never to have been printed but is deposited in the monastery of St. Roque Lisbon. Balthazar Telles made large use of the information therein in his Historia geral da Ethiopia a Alta Coimbra 1660 often erroneously attributed to Lobo see Machado's Bibliotheca Lusitana. Lobo's own narrative was translated from a manuscript copy into French in 1728 by the Abbe Joachim le Grand under the title of Voyage historique d'Abissinie. In 1669 a translation by Sir Peter Wyche of several passages from a manuscript account of Lobo's travels was published by the Royal Society translated in Melchisédech Thévenot<i>Relation des voyages</i> in 1673. An English abridgment of Le Grand's edition by Dr. Johnson was published in 1735 reprinted 1789. In a <i>Mémoire justificatif en réhabilitation des pères. Pierre Paëz et Jérôme Lobo</i> Dr. C. T.
