A little rubbing to head-pieces, joints and corners. Faint scattered spotting, mostly to margins. A very good copy. In 1835, Washington Irving met a soldier of French origin who had come back after a three-year expedition to the West, beyond the Rocky Mountains. With the help of their conversations and his manuscript of numerous notes, the author wrote this account of the voyage. The first chapters present the state of the American trading companies and their relations with the West. The rest is made up of the account of Captain Bonneville's expedition with his 110 men. This includes numerous accounts of bison hunting, Native American tribes (Black Ravens, White Bears) and most notably of The Deerslayer, the famous hero of Fenimore Cooper's trilogy and his most famous novel, The Last of the Mohicans. En 1835, Washington Irving fit la connaissance d'un militaire d'origine française revenu après 3 ans d'une expédition dans l'ouest, par delà les montagnes Rocheuses. A l'aide de ses conversations et de son manuscrit composé de nombreuses notes, l'auteur écrivit ce récit de voyages. Les premiers chapitres font état de la situation des compagnies commerciales américaines et de leurs relations avec l'ouest. Le reste est occupé par la relation de l'expédition du capitaine Bonneville et de ses 110 hommes. On y trouvera de nombreux récits sur les chasses aux bisons, les tribus indiennes (corbeaux noirs, ours blanc) et notamment sur Tueur de daims, le fameux héros de la trilogie de Fenimore Cooper, notamment dans son roman le plus célèbre : Le dernier des Mohicans.

It is one of the few books of the time which describes journeys across Rio Grande do Sul. The author was a guest of Bompland. . .He also visited the German colony of Sao Leopoldo in Port Alegre and the missions. The work is not easy to find today'. The author traveled through Argentina, Uruguay, Brazil, Rio do Sol, extensively around the Buenos Aires area. The frontis is view of Buenos Aires from the harbour, the other plates include a gaucho in process of roping a steer, costume plates. The often lacking errata leaf is present. A preliminary leaf has a printing of the author's signature.

Hardcover in red and light green patterned Nishijin textile a special product of Kyoto per the note printed on the verso side of the rear flyleaf. The binding has scuffs/fraying at the edges. Some damping/toning spots on the front and rear covers. Rubbing at the corners. Green patterned cloth on the front and rear pastedowns. The front and rear flyleaves have color illustrations. A note tipped in at the front states "With the compliments of Keizo Itimura Mayor of Japan." There is a spot of abrasion on the front flyleaf and there are brief tears at the bottom edge of the Title Page and the Preface. Text is toned at outer edges. Book is full of a mix of tipped in and printed illustrations. Most of the photographic images are black and white but some are in color. <br/> <br/> The Kyoto Municipal Government hardcover
