Griffin 3558: 'perceptive observations on all aspects of Guatemalan life during his extensive travels in the country.' This is the second account in English of Guatemala to have been published, the first being by Gage in 1648, and as such make this a valuable contribution to the early description of the area. Because the 1829 edition has additional material and the map, not present in the 1828 first edition, it is the most desirable. Apparently no reprint has appeared in English since 1829. Grieb GU392: 'One of the classic travelogues. . . his account emphasizes travel difficulties, poor conditions and the remoteness of the region but also provides a description of life in Guatemala City at the time and its relative isolation due to the lack of transportation facilities. Madras India: F. Dunsterville 1890. Elias Frederick Evans Dunsterville probably 1847-1908 exhibited for the Royal Photographic Society in 1896 and became a fellow in 1898. He worked for the Madras and Southern Mahratta Railways in India from 1878 until 1902. During that time he travelled extensively throughout India taking many superb photographs. Provenance: from the collection of Robert N. Dennis who was one of the most important stereoview collectors in the United States. The New York Public Library's "Robert N. Dennis Collection" includes more than 70000 stereoviews from his collection many of which can be viewed on the library's website. Please note that my scanner does not do well with glass stereoviews. Lettres sur l'Italie
Au cours d'un voyage en 1785, qui nous conduit d'Avignon à Florence, Rome, Naples et Paestum, Charles Dupaty, écrivain très imprégné de l'esprit de Rousseau, nous donne ici des réflexions fort intéressantes sur la société de son temps, la justice, ou la condition du peuple. Auteur encore imprégné de l'esprit des Lumières, le magistrat Charles Dupaty (1746-1788), membre de l'Académie des belles-lettres de La Rochelle. L'auteur, qui entreprit son tour d'Italie en 1785, s'adresse à sa famille et à ses amis pour leur offrir, dans un style volontiers poétique, ses impressions de voyage, d'Avignon à Naples, ainsi que ses réflexions, tant sur les mœurs, les monuments et les arts, que sur la jurisprudence criminelle et l'économie politique. Dupaty est également reconnu pour un Mémoire justificatif où il prenait la défense de trois hommes condamnés à la roue paru en 1786.
