From the author's Preface the book tells the story of a 20-month voyage from August 1880 of the yawl Falcon in South American and West Indian Waters with a crew of four amateurs and a cabin-boy. The narrative includes the description of a five-month cruise up the Rivers Prana and Paraguay and a ride across the Pampas to Tucuman.
