‎Lettre autographe signée à la citoyenne Courant la jeune, demeurant rue de Paris à Moulins, département de l'Allier‎

‎Lorient, 6 floréal an 12 [26 avril 1804]. 3 pp. in-4 (24,4 x 19,4 cm), adresse et marques postales.‎

‎Intéressante lettre sur le transport des troupes de Brest à Rochefort, puis de Nantes à Boulogne, malgré le blocus anglais. Elle est illustrée d'un dessin aquarellé représentant la frégate l'Infatigable, sur laquelle le militaire avait pris place au cours de la première traversée vers Rochefort. Courant était sergent-major de la 22e compagnie du 37e régiment d'infanterie de ligne basé à Brest. Il donne ici des nouvelles à sa femme : "Je te dirai, ma bonne amie, qu'il y a 6 compagnies de notre régiment qui ont embarqué le 15 nivôse [6 janvier 1804], du nombre desquels j'ai fait partie; sur différens batimens de guerre que nous avons conduit à Rochefort sans dangers, quoique ayant passé au milieu d'une flotte anglaise, qui, au moyen du brouillard, ne nous a pas aperçus; arrivés à Rochefort, où nous sommes restés jusqu'au 10 pluviôse [31 janvier], époque où nous en sommes partis, nous n'avons pas mis un seul instant le pied à terre, nous avons toujours restés dans nos batimens, car il nous était bien défendu d'en sortir, attendu que les Anglais nous tenaient bloqués". Il ajoute : "Cependant il est survenu un vent si violent que MM. les Anglais se sont retirés, et alors nous avons entrés en rade; où étant, nous avons débarqué pour nous rendre à Nantes; aussitôt notre arrivée dans cette ville, il s'est trouvé une division de bateaux plats que nous avons été obligés de conduire à Boulogne avec le 40e régiment; et certes cela n'a pas été sans peine, car à la hauteur de Brest, une division anglaise nous a poursuivis et ayant livré le combat nous avons été forcés d'entrer dans la baie d'Audierne, où nous avons restés pendant huit jours avec beaucoup de peine, attendu que ces bateaux sont si petits qu'on est obligé de rester toujours assis dans la calle; nous avons eu le malheur d'en perdre deux qui ont coulé à fond avec tout l'équipage et un qui a été pris par l'ennemi…". Le convoi arrive à Boulogne le 30 ventôse [21 mars 1804] : "Il n'existe rien de plus beau au monde que la réunion des batimens devant Boulogne, on présume que c'est de là que doit partir l'expédition…". Puis Courant reçoit l'ordre de rejoindre son régiment à Lorient, d'où il écrit la présente lettre. Exécuté par l'un de ses amis, le dessin aquarellé représente l'Infatigable, une frégate de 32 canons qui avait effectué, en 1802, un transport de troupes de Cherbourg au Cap Français (Saint-Domingue), puis une mission à La Havane (Cuba) avant de rejoindre Brest. En 1806, elle sera prise par les Anglais en sortant de Rochefort et deviendra le HMS Immortality; non réarmée dans la Royal Navy, la frégate sera démolie en 1811. Cf. Copper engraved vignette to left upper corner with title on banner; strap work cartouches to lower left corner with explanation. Guillaume de l'Isle (1675-1726) was the son of a cartographer and pupil of Jean Dominique Cassini, who, among other important contributions, aligned the study of astronomy to the study of geography. Under Cassini's direction, observations were made from locations all over the world that enabled longitudinal calculations to be made with much greater accuracy. De l'Isle carried on this exacting work with remarkable dedication and integrity, constantly revising and improving his maps. While precision was his primary goal, his maps are invariably elegant and attractive. Covens &amp; Mortier as a firm existed between 1721-1778, taking over the business of Pierrre Mortier.
