The Mercers' School was founded by the Worshipful Company of Mercers in London in the 16th century and operated until 1959. Blank leaf following front endpapers in vol. 1 bears bookplate of the same armorial decoration and written below: "Reward of Merit to Master John Faulkner Mercers School Midsummer 1848." On the following blank leaf is a gift inscription from John Faulkner to his son J. Faulkner Jr. dated 1894. Engraved bookplate on each front fixed endpaper of J. Faulkner Junr. William Macneile Dixon 1866-1946 was an English author and professor of English language and literature at the University of Glasgow from 1904 to 1935. The author Nicholas Charles Victor Oudinot duc de Reggio 1791-1863 was the son of Napoleon I's marshal Nicolas Oudinot. In 1814 at the end of the later Napoleonic campaigns he was promoted to major. He led the cavalry school at Saumur from 1822 to 1830 and was inspector general of cavalry from 1836 to 1848. Most significantly he commanded the eight to ten thousand French troops that besieged Rome in 1849 taking it back from the short-lived Roman Republic.
