Austrian-American opera singer who appeared at the Metropolitan Opera from 1921 to 1932 and at the Vienna State Opera from 1912 to 1935; she starred in the title role at the North American premiere of Puccini's "Turandot" in 1926. Thin large "with best wishes / Maria Jeritza" in light black fountain pen on a pristine pink 6" X 3 3/4" autograph album leaf n.p. n.y. Very good. Although it could be bolder still a large and easily readable example. No place or year indicated but from the collection of noted collector Preston Sawyer 1899-1968 California journalist and historical writer who obtained this in San Francisco around 1930. unknown

The play was first staged in 1993 at the California Institute of the Arts under the title "Oswego" but was later staged under the alternate title "Haven" at the Gindi Theatre in Los Angeles in 2001. <br /> <br /> Playwright Jerome Coopersmith wrote prolifically for television and the stage throughout the mid- to late-twentieth century. He is best remembered today for his writing for "Hawaii Five-O" 1968-1980 and the 1974 Christmas television special "'Twas the Night Before Christmas" but also contributed episodes for "Armstrong Circle Theater" "The Streets of San Francisco" "Combat!" "Spenser for Hire" and others. Denken Sie sich, H. Doktor, nur in meine traurige, ja beinahe verzweifelte Lage hinein: als Techniker opferte ich meiner blinden Leidenschaft für Musik meine Gesundheit und meine Lebenskarriere. Lange Jahre verzehrte mich ein heißer Wunsch, zu komponieren, wobei ich zu einer anhaltenden geistigen Arbeit ganz untauglich war. Und jetzt, wo musikalisches Schaffen das höchste Vergnügen meines sonst nicht gar erquicklichen, einsamen Lebens ausmacht, versperrt man mir überall Wege in die Öffentlichkeit, ich soll zuletzt alle Hoffnungen aufgeben und dabei zusehen, wie protegierte Jünglinge, die noch keine eigenen, reifen Gedanken bringen, mit dem Conservatorium unmittelbar zum Verleger und in den Konzertsaal befördert werden. An einen ungenannten "Herrn Dr." im Umkreis des Prager Deutschen Theaters: bezugnehmend auf ein Gespräch am Vortag bittet er, seine (tschechischsprachige) Oper den Kapellmeistern, die vor lauter Arbeit und insbesondere mit der Durchsicht zahlreicher Opern, die das Prager Theater geradezu überschwemmen ("prý divadlo ruznými operami z ciziny jest prímo zaplaveno"), überfordert sind, zu empfehlen. "Bitte machen Sie sich nicht an die Arbeit der Übersetzung, was zum derzeitigen Zeitpunkt gar nicht dafürsteht [...] Die Honorarfrage überlasse ich ganz Ihnen bzw. der Direktion" (Übs.). Ein gewisser Kovarovic habe das Werk als gründliche polyphonische Arbeit gelobt und sei dabei auch auf einige Details eingegangen, dann aber habe dieser die Oper nicht angenommen, sondern Jerábek nach vier Monaten retourniert und ihm geraten, sich mit der Arbeit nach Pilsen zu wenden. Was er sonst noch mit Kovarovic besprochen habe, wolle er lieber selbst im Vertrauen mitteilen. Er bitte um Antwort per Korrespondenzkarte und kündigt an, sich in einer Woche noch einmal in der Sache melden zu werden.

An einen ungenannten "Herrn Dr." im Umkreis des Prager Deutschen Theaters mit der Mitteilung, er habe nun den deutschen Text mit Klavierauszug fertig, damit Kapellmeister Bloch die Partitur begutachten könne. Der Empfänger möge sich bitte von den einfachen Lebensumständen eines alten Witwers ohne Freunde und Protektion nicht täuschen lassen; er sei in der Lage, sein Versprechen zu halten, denn er sei ja Hausbesitzer in Smíchov in der Jeronýmova úlice Nr. 11 und überdies bereit, das Honorar in der Höhe von 200 Kronen oder mehr zur Disposition zu stellen. Sollte auf dem Protektionsweg (also über die Besprechung mit Kapellmeister Bloch) nichts erfolgen, dann werde sich Jerábek nach Ablauf einer Woche mit seiner Oper direkt an die Direktion des Deutschen Theaters oder auch an ein Haus in Deutschland wenden, um nicht wieder ein Jahr zu verlieren. Er bitte dann nur, der Empfänger möge der Direktion gegenüber das mündlich ausgesprochene Urteil über das Werk wiederholen. - Minimal angestaubt.
