br. Il rapporto tra medicina e controllo sociale è tema che ha una rilevanza e attualità in tutto il mondo, e che accentua la sua dimensione in un'epoca nella quale spesso l'individuo delega e deresponsabilizza se stesso da alcuni problemi, chiedendo ad altri di prendersene cura. Il testo affronta come sia rilevante nella modernità la dimensione del controllo sociale medico, in concomitanza con lo sviluppo della medicina e dei gruppi professionali ad essa associata. Inoltre pone in evidenza quali sono le due branche della medicina particolarmente adatte a sviluppare e sorvegliare la salute dei cittadini: la psichiatria e la salute pubblica. Il libro fornisce una visione complessiva della natura del controllo medico, iniziando con lo spiegare, mediante le categorie della sociologia classica, la forma del controllo sociale esercitato da una varietà di attori sociali: medici e non medici, all'interno di varie sfere istituzionali quali la famiglia, la scuola, la comunità e così via. Medicina e controllo sociale è parte di un lavoro più ampio dedicato al controllo sociale (Social control. An Introduction), scritto da J. Chriss nel 2007.
