Daire, 'Physiocrates', II, p. 88). (Conlon, 'Siècle des Lumières', 64:987. Goldsmiths, 10051.1. Weulersse, 'Mouvement physiocratique', I, p.xxvii). Relié avec: SERVAN (Joseph-Michel-Antoine). Koln: Coloniæ, apud Theodorum Baumium, 1568. 8vo.; 24 hojas, 363 folios, 1 hoja.

1970ref. 171823Riyadh: Ministry of Defense and Aviation Army of Saudi Arabia 1970. An otherwise unrecorded manual designed for American personnel helping train the Saudi military during the reorganization of the country's military under King Faisal. In the late 1960s Saudi Arabia engaged the American firm Commonwealth-Tumpane to run on-the-job classroom and counterpart training for military personnel. In the latter trainees studied the duties and responsibilities of positions. The opening sections discuss human relations and managerial strategy. The majority of the manual concerns job proficiency guides for the roles mentored under the scheme ranging from vehicle maintenance inspectors to armaments repair foremen and engineering equipment instructors. "Given enough time confidence courage and spirit of compromise the Program will be a success. The Trainee must do most of the work for which he is being trained and only that work and the Trainer must provide large doses of advice and assistance sharing his professional experience skill and wisdom" pp. 2-3. At around the time this guide was issued a separate force - the Saudi National Guard - was being restructured with British involvement. Quarto. With numerous diagrams in text; contents xerox typescript. Spiral bound in original cream card wrappers front cover lettered in black. Front wrapper with small pencil annotation. Wrappers somewhat soiled with small areas of skinning loss to spiral at head of spine contents generally clean minor ink stains: a very good copy. unknown

1890Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) Extremely rare and first and only edition of this Cairo imprint book that suggested a uniform Hegira calendar for all Muslim nations. It's work on chronology as well, including a fine guide to converting Hijri and Gregorian calendars. Ahmed Muhtar was born on 1 November 1839 to a Turkish family in Bursa in the Ottoman Empire and was educated in the Ottoman Military College in Istanbul. His father was merchant Halil Efendi. He eventually became professor and then governor of the school. In 1856, he served as an adjutant during the Crimean War. In 1862, he was a staff officer in the disastrous Montenegrin campaign. Between 1870 and 1871, he quelled rebellions in Yemen. He gained the titles of Pasha and Marshal and, in 1873, was made commander of the Second Army Corps, holding the position until 1876. During the 1875 uprisings in Bosnia and Herzegovina, he assumed control of the Turkish forces there. On the outbreak of the Russo-Turkish War, 1877-1878, he was sent to take charge of operations in Erzurum. Although the Russians ultimately defeated the Ottomans in the war, Muhtar's victories against them in the eastern front won him the title Gazi ("The Victorious"). In 1879, Ahmed Muhtar Pasha was appointed the commander of the Ottoman Empire's frontier with Greece, before being sent in 1885 to serve as the Ottoman High Commissioner in Egypt. The rare bilingual first edition of work on chronology. It advocates a uniform solar Hejra year from all Muslim nations. Scarce first edition of the famous German educators mathematical textbook - his suggestion to how mathematics should be taught in his educational reform. Basedow’s views were based on the writings of men such as John Amos Comenius John Locke and Jean-Jacques Rousseau. His practical teaching methods were more expansive in their implications for education than those of any of his immediate predecessors in the field and by the early 19th century they had become a fundamental force in Germany’s public school systems.

Eddy was a Quaker merchant and reformer who had spent time in prison during the Revolution because of his Tory sympathies. He had befriended Philip Schuyler the father-in-law of Alexander Hamilton and hosted a visit of his to Philadelphia to inspect the Walnut Street Jail in 1796. This visit was the impetus for the first penal reform in New York State. Eddy was thus launched upon a career. In 1801 he published the book offered here that is a description of a new prison. The actual design was the work of the Mangin brothers see DAB who are best known for the design of New York City Hall. Eddy's report however contains all of his stipulations for the building and its appointments as well as a detailed summary of how the inmates were to be treated menu lists clothing etc. A most important book: the first native American work on prisons written by the country's first prison director. 1856ref. 4036Mexico City: Imprenta de Ignacio Cumplido 1856. Still very good. 17pp. Original printed wrappers bound into full calf front board gilt lettered. Some toning and scattered light foxing. This law was promulgated at the end of 1856 by the new liberal government of Mexico following its ascendancy in the mid-1850s and preceded the reform Constitution of 1857 by two months. Its statutes defined "crimes against the independence and security of the nation" including various forms of treason rebellion and foreign military service or assistance and made them punishable by death. The law anticipated conservative resistance and revolt against the new policies of the liberal faction that aimed to strip power and influence from the church and traditional aristocracy of the country. Their efforts indeed led to full-scale civil war in 1858 and the second French intervention in the early 1860s. OCLC locates a small handful of institutional copies and we locate just one in available sales records. Scarce and in attractive original wrappers.

J.-G. Petit,' Ces peines obscures', p. 163. Vander Haeghen, 'Bibliographie Gantoise', n°4551).
