réf. 17803Hard covers. This is a photolithographic gift book of New York. There are 28 small photographs of scenes in New York that look like photographs, but many are photographs of prints which has been reworked to look like glossy photos. They have been printed in a rich sepia toned ink. The images are of various places, buildings, and landmarks in the horse and buggy days as well as elevated railroads. The opening photo is a miniature bird's eye view of Manhatten with Brooklyn and New Jersey spread across both pages - tiny, but clear. There are sailing and steam ships on the rivers. The look of New York of that period is captured and the variety of photos is encompassing - Cotton Exchange, Hebrew Orphan Asylum, High Curve Elevated Railroad, Grand Central Depot. The cover is a finely pebbled cloth - tan brown with a subtlely blind-stamped floral bouquet design and a banner title with the title New York and a sillouette of the Statue of Liberty. The gilt that was once on the cover has faded. The covers are thin. There is edge wear and a touch of soil. The interior is clean and bright. And without wear. The pages are in a folding accordian display.

1807réf. 14775This sketch, which is characterised by the artist's usual spirit when dealing with kindred subjects, represents the situation of a rustic swain, whose philanderings have landed him in the midst of the perplexities of a double dilemma. It is seemingly 'washing day,' and the gallant intruder has effected his admission to court the graces of a pretty maiden, who is thrown into consternation at the risk to which her suitor, by an awkward contretemps, is suddenly exposed. The pair have evidently been disturbed at the moment the lady was engaged in drawing a mug of ale for the refreshment of her admirer ; in the confusion, the tap of the beer barrel is still left running, and all the maid's solicitude is centred in the position of her swain, who has incautiously taken refuge in the copper. A very disagreeable-looking old beldame is kindling a blazing fire in the stove, while a buxom wench is working away at the pump, which is pouring gallons of water into the unlucky Lothario's place of concealment. The youth is hesitating midway between the ordeals of fire or water, and he is struggling to effect his escape from both, at the risk of exposure and its consequences. EXTREMELY RARE collection of 51 engravings, originally collected by Yitzhak Ben-Zvi, the second President of the State of Israel. The engravings were originally produced in the 19th century, and reprinted for this undated book. There is no information given about the identity of the artists nor the date of printing of these reproductions, but they are likely to have been printed in the late 1960's - the years in which the Israeli Publishing Institute was active. The book contains all 51 engravings listed in its index. All engravings are in b&w, and depict dramatic landscape art and the daily life in the 19th-century Hold Land. Each engraving is mounted inside a separate plate with a window at the front. The 51 plates are loose inside a cardboard case, which also contains a short introduction (unsigned) and three index pages. The index gives some explanation about each image. 285x235mm. Unpaginated, with a title page, 1 introduction page, 3 index pages, and the aforementioned 51 engravings mounted on separate plates. Tan faux-parchment cardboard folder case with illustrated title sticker on front. Case is in shoddy condition, with all corners worn, most edges worn, and all hinges broken detached from each other. All pages and plates in excellent condition with very mild yellowing and a few very-slightly bent corners. Plate 21 is creased, though the engraving itself is not creased nor damaged. [SUMMARY]: Despite considerable deterioration in the state of its outer casing, this relatively unknown collection of extremely-rare 19th-century engravings is internally in excellent condition.

1929réf. ARC93326The Cresset Press London 1929. Book. Very Good. Hardcover. 1st Edition. First edition printed at the Curwen Press and limited to 450 numbered copies on mould-made paper plus a further thirty deluxe copies this one of the 450 examples but un-numbered. Large 4to. 406pp. Bound in full brown buckram with two red leather spine labels lettered and bordered in gold this binding unusual as the 'correct' binding should be white vellum; the fact that this example is un-numbered may suggest that it was intended as a trial or proof copy or perhaps a file copy. Fore- and bottom edges untrimmed. A touch of very light spotting to the edges and endpapers and to very occasional leaf margins. Backstrip ends very gently rubbed. A very good copy of an uncommon and quite delightful production: a tour-de-force collaboration featuring some of the finest wood engravers of the post-Great War period each one tackling one of the fourteen books classified as apocryphal by the King James Bible. The four reminiscences evoke personal and literary memories characteristic of Walpole's gift for atmosphere and narrative ease. The press's elegant design-rich red morocco contrasting with the patterned cloth boards-creates a visually striking yet harmonious volume while the fine printing and illustration underscore the craftsmanship associated with the Golden Cockerel Press at its height. A refined example of early twentieth-century private press work appealing to collectors of illustrated literature and fine bindings. Sir Hugh Seymour Walpole 1884-1941 was a prolific English novelist and man of letters. The son of an Anglican clergyman he initially considered a religious vocation before turning to writing encouraged by figures such as Henry James and Arnold Bennett. Walpole achieved considerable popularity in the 1920s and 1930s known for his vivid storytelling strong sense of place and engaging characterizations. Though his reputation has diminished since his lifetime his work remains an important part of early twentieth-century English literary culture. Golden Cockerel Press unknown
