Tra un po' la ragazza si alzerà, e lui la seguirà fino al bar della biblioteca, dove scambierà con lei le prime parole. Le dirà che è svizzero e che sta scrivendo un libro sui treni di lusso americani. Saprà che lei si chiama Agnes, è americana, studia fisica e suona il violoncello. Il suo divertito cinismo la stuzzicherà talmente che si rivedranno spesso. Passeggeranno sulle sponde del lago Michigan a discutere con gravità tutta giovanile di arte e politica, scienza e sentimento. Si innamoreranno... Un giorno, però, Agnes gli chiederà: "Perché non scrivi una storia su di me? Così so che cosa pensi veramente". Lui lo farà e, nove mesi dopo, sarà costretto ad annotare: "Agnes è morta.
