BRUCE Charles
Twenty Years in Borneo
Sabah 1999. First published in 1924. Facsimile reprint illustrated pp 10 266 paperback a very good. copy. A young Englishman with some experience working in a solicitor's office as a cook in a lumber camp as a "chore boy" on a Canadian farm and as a paper seller on a train signs up for a post in the Armed Constabulary of North Borneo. This book is an absorbing account of Charles Bruce's journey to the east where he lived and worked in Sandakan Jesselton and Tempasuk with visits to Manila and Zamboanga in the Philippines in between. His lust for life travel and good sense of humour chronicles a 20-year journey filled with amusing anecdotes of the various characters native and European that filled his life. His personal observations of characters and views on day to day administrative and personal matters gives the impression that to truly enjoy Borneo you have to see the brighter side of life in the tropics. A sportsman and gentleman of sorts Charles Bruce's candor and forthrightness carries the book and makes a sound case for 'live and let live'. Paperback. New. Paperback

All volumes have scattered minor foxing. Bruce was appointed British consul general to the Moorish city of Algiers. To prepare himself for this new job he perfected his Arabic and he began to study the little-known Ethiopian tongues of Amharic and Ge'ez. After two years in Algiers he spent the next seven years traveling in North Africa and the Near East equipping himself for an enterprise which in the words of his first biographer "had taken deeper possession of Mr. Bruce's mind than any other project." His goal was to reach Ethiopia and find the springs which were said to be the source of the Nile. While admitting that the White Nile was the larger river he was convinced that the Blue Nile was the Nile of the ancients. For all his exuberance Bruce was mistaken on two counts. This spring was not the true source of the Nile nor was he the first European to reach it of the two branches that unite to form Africa's greatest river the White Nile is the longer and the place where it issues from Lake Victoria is now generally accepted as "the source of the Nile." The Blue Nile is in this sense a tributary. This important and highly readable account was published years after the events described and was greeted with scepticism though all the detail within has been confirmed by later travellers. A superior copy of a rare and important set in the literature of African exploration. First Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good Plus. 4to. Printed By J. Ruthven for G. G. J. And J. Robinson Hardcover
