From Wikli: He was a planter, slave owner and author from Charles City County in colonial Virginia. He is considered the founder of Richmond, Virginia. Byrd's life showed aspects of both British colonial gentry and an emerging American identity. His education included the classics, apprenticeship with London global business agents, and legal studies. He was admitted to the bar and served for years as Virginia Colony's official agent in London where he opposed increasing the power of royal governors. A member of the Royal Society, he was an early advocate of smallpox inoculation. Upon his return to Virginia, Byrd expanded his plantation holdings, was elected to the House of Burgesses, and served on Virginia Governor's Council, also known as Virginia's Council of State from 1709 until his death in 1744. Peter Byrne Feb 1991." In pencil the recipients have added the last name of the couple and a note next to Rara's signature saying she was only 6 years old at the time of signing. A very good copy with minor wear at the corner edges - a clean tight copy - as if unread. One more notation in pencil at rear being the only other writing. Unclipped jacket is also very good with some wear along the top panel edges and light soiling to the panels. 240 pp. some b/w photos - Byrne's return to Nepal - this time not to search for Yeti but to attempt to draw attention to the plight of the Asian Elephant. Contemporary full calf with gilt-roll and blind-tooled border flat back with gilt lettering Gloster-patterned marbled endpapers similar marbling to all edges ribbon bookmark. Interior crisp clean and bright. Covers gently rubbed and scuffed spine leather with light crease lines else very good crisp copy. Byron was a midshipman in the Wager one of Anson's support ships which was wrecked off the Chilean coast in 1741. This is an account of "one of the most harrowing experiences recorded in English naval history . of pillaging treachery and murder by the crew most of whom claimed that since their pay ceased the moment the ship was lost they were no longer subject to military discipline and it was every man for himself. It told of Byron's own living off the sea without shelter or clothing on the `most unprofitable spot on the globe of the earth' . " Gallagher. "It has often been republished and supplied some hints for the shipwreck scene in `Don Juan' whose author compares the sufferings of his hero `to those related in my grand-dad's "Narrative"; though in deed the fictitious sufferings of Juan were trifling in comparison with those actually recorded by John Byron." <p>iv viii 257 pp. Lrg. 8vo rebound in half leather and marbled boards with new endpapers. Half title perimeter repaired with tissue some soiling to gutter of frontis and title page not affecting image or text otherwise a very good clean copy. John "Foulweather Jack" Byron entered the Royal Navy in 1731. As midshipman he sailed to South America on HMS Wager part of George Anson's squadron. Upon approaching Patagonia the Wager encountered a terrible storm and the crew was shipwrecked. The survivors divided into two teams and proposed that one team would head towards Rio de Janeiro via the Straights of Magellan and the other one led by Byron to sail north up the Chilean coast in open boats to meet the Spaniards. Sabin notes "Admiral Byron's narrative of the loss of the Wager is one of the most thrilling accounts in the language and supplied his illustrious descendant with many particulars for the shipwreck in 'Don Juan'". Miraculously he lived to tell the tale and later went on to assume the position of Governor of Newfoundland. Incidentally in December of 2006 the British Scientific Exploration Society with the help of the Chilean Navy has located what they believe to be a section of the hull of the wreck of HMS Wager.
