Le détachement d'une dizaine d'officiers sous les ordres du lieutenant-colonel Hügel, ""sans soutien officiel"" part de Bordeaux en septembre 1769 : pour l'occasion Hugau est nommé capitaine de cavalerie. Après une longue étape à l' Île-de-France, le détachement français débarque à Goa le 1er janvier 1771, puis après de très nombreuses aventures rejoint l'armée d'Hyder Ali Khan. Cette dernière est sévèrement battue le 2 mars 1771, par la cavalerie Marathes qui cherche à reprendre le contrôle de la province du Mysore. Après cet échec Hugau est désigné pour porter des nouvelles en France et il quitte les Indes en janvier 1772 pour rejoindre Brest le 15 juillet. Petit coup au bas du dos. 579pp. A Paris, Hachette & Cie 1864 John Speke (1827-1864), se rendra en Afrique pour découvrir les sources du Nil blanc et du Nil bleu, une première fois en compagnie de Richard-Francis Burton; un profond différent les opposera après le départ de Speke en solitaire jusqu'au Lac Victoria, bien au-delà des cataractes, duquel le Nil prend sa source. A leur retour un vif débat les opposera sur la véracité de cette découverte. Une seconde expédition sera alors engagée par Speke en compagnie du Capitaine J.A. Grant qui dessinera tous les croquis rapportés de ce voyage et reproduits dans cet ouvrage. Après de nombreuses péripéties, l'objet de ce volume, et après leur retour, Burton continuant à contester la découverte de Speke, un débat public sera organisé entre les deux antagonistes, mais Speke mourra d'un accident de chasse peu avant l'ouverture de cette réunion. ‎London: G. Nicol & T. Cadell 1784. Etched and engraved by C. Grignion after a drawing by Webber. Image size: 10 1/4 x 7 inches. Sheet size: 22 x 15 1/2 inches. In this attractive portrait a young muscular man dances what was then a sacred dance called Hula. In his right hand he holds a feather covered gourd. Virtually nude he wears only a bark cloth "malo" or loin cloth a coral necklace and dogtooth leggings. His body is tattooed in rhythmic patterns that flow down his arms and legs.<br/> <br/>"Cook's third voyage was organized to seek the Northwest Passage and to return the islander Omai to Tahiti. Officers of the crew included William Bligh James Burney James Colnett and George Vancouver. John Webber was appointed artist to the expedition. After calling at Kerguelen Island Tasmania New Zealand and the Cook Tonga and Society Islands the expedition sailed north and discovered Christmas Island and the Hawaiian Islands which Cook named the Sandwich Islands. Cook charted the American west coast from Northern California through the Bering Strait as far north as latitude 70 degrees 44 minutes before he was stopped by pack ice. He returned to Hawaii for the winter and was killed in an unhappy skirmish with the natives. Charles Clarke took command and after he died six months later the ships returned to England under John Gore. Despite hostilities with the United States and France the scientific nature of this expedition caused the various governments to exempt these vessels from capture. The voyage resulted in what Cook judged his most valuable discovery - the Hawaiian Islands" Hill. John Webber R.A. born in London of Swiss parents was the official artist on Cook's historic and final Pacific voyage. Blossom formed part of a double-pronged assault on the western approaches to the Arctic. Sent by way of Bering�s Strait to explore the northern coast eastward Beechey was to eventually link up with Franklin�s second expedition working westward from the Mackenzie River. The two parties came within several hundred miles of each other one of Beechey�s vessels managing to penetrate as far as Cape Barrow while Franklin turned back at Return Reef at about 149 degrees west. The narrative contains scientific data descriptions of Eskimo life and culture and much of importance relating to Alaska including the Aleutian Pribilov and other islands the Tuamotu Archipelago the Society Islands and Tahiti Hawaii and the coast of California. There are also valuable accounts of Monterey and San Francisco prior to the American conquest as well as a lengthy account of the mutiny of the Bounty as related by its sole survivor John Adams. "Beechey's expedition went to the Bering Strait "As a relief expedition to await the separate expeditions of Captains Franklin and Parry." Beechey heard at Kamchatka that Parry had turned back but he waited at Kotzebue Sound for Franklin through the Summers of 1827-8. "Near Point Barrow Alaska Beechey and Franklin had arrived within fifty leagues of each other when the latter was compelled by the weather to turn back." Also described are visits to Pitcairn Island Tahiti Alaska Hawaii Macao Okinawa and the coast of California. On Pitcairn Beechey met the last survivor of the Bounty mutiny John Adams. "He also gives an important account of Monterey and San Francisco before the American conquest." Beechey rose to Rear-Admiral and between 1836-47 undertook a survey of the coast of Ireland.
