Includes Dudley's maritime map of the Indian Ocean, with the east of the Arabian Peninsula. Second (and arguably best) edition of Dudley’s landmark work on shipbuilding, nautical and astronomical instruments and navigation, all profusely illustrated with engravings. Book 1 deals with longitude; book 2 covers the errors which can be made when drawing sea-charts; book 3 deals with military and naval manoeuvres and exercise; book 4 describes the method of designing and building ships, on which this present work is the first scientific publication; book 5 is devoted to the art of navigation. Book 6, which is not present here, contains the sea atlas. The "Arcano del Mare (secrets of the sea) ... is an encyclopedia of everything connected with the sea from shipbuilding to navigation to cartography. This volume contains the text and volvelles for the sections devoted to navigation. It has been said that this volume is to the history of precision instruments of the seventeenth century what Peter Apian’s Astronomicum Caesareum was to the sixteenth" (Tomash & Williams). - The engraver employed for the immense task was Antonio Francesco Lucini, born in Florence in 1605. Lucini states in this second edition of 1661 that he worked for twelve years in a small Tuscan village, using 5,000 pounds of copper to make the plates. They represent the finest of Italian capabilities, the clarity of the engraving presenting an uncluttered image. Even the florid italic calligraphy, while fulfilling a purpose, is of the highest standard. - This is an example of the first volume only, containing books 1-5 of 6 but lacking the 15 general maps. The Library of Congress possesses a similar volume, and Phillips describes in detail the differing collations of Books 1-5. "The remainder of the work consists of writings to explain navigation, latitude and longitude, winds, tides, military and naval warfare, naval architecture, and instruments. Dudley illustrates his constructions and supplies working models with volvelles and pointers which can be moved for calculations [...] Up to about 1946, the Specola Museum in Florence possessed working wooden models of the instruments devised by Dudley. Quarto with six plates and seven maps most folding; a fine large and uncut with the list of subscribers; in impressive full black crushed morocco with raised bands and gilt lettering by Sangorski and Sutcliffe. An unusually large copy of the first official account in a majestic binding by master English craftsmen Sangorski and Sutcliffe. This is the full official account of the first missionary voyage to the South Pacific. The Duff set out for Tahiti in 1796 but visited many island groups including particularly Tonga and the Marquesas. A new group of islands the "Duff Group" was discovered among the Santa Cruz Islands. The maps here include a large chart of the Fiji Islands as well as charts of Tongataboo the Gambier Islands the Marquesas Tahiti and the Duff Group; the plates include an engraved view of Rio de Janeiro. Wilson is identified as the author of the main body of the work in the Advertisement which explains that he put it together from the captain's papers as well as his own and from the missionaries' reports. The Hill catalogue notes that 'the long "preliminary discourse" was anonymously written by Samuel Greatheed using the then-unpublished narrative of James Morrison one of the pardoned Bounty mutineers. Morrison's manuscript was also the source for the extensive appendix on Tahiti. Indeed William Wilson and James Morrison may be called co-authors of this book.'. According to the map expert Dorothy F. Prescott 'the Wilson book contained a map that actually used the words "Greater Australia" - taking in Captain Cook's map of the south and east coasts of Van Diemens Land. this map would have influenced Matthew Flinders.'. Flinders is traditionally said to have been the first to use the term "Australia" in a voyage context: the Duff account appeared about fifteen years earlier. There is much of Australian interest in the account of the voyage including a mention of escaped Botany Bay convicts and the flight of several missionaries from Tonga where three were killed to Sydney. Quarto with six plates and seven maps most folding list of subscribers errata leaf library markings but a fine tall copy in modern red half calf by Sangorski. First edition an attractive copy of the Chapman edition of the Duff voyage. This is the full official account of the first missionary voyage to the South Pacific. The Duff set out for Tahiti in 1796 but visited many island groups including particularly Tonga and the Marquesas. A new group of islands the "Duff Group" was discovered among the Santa Cruz Islands. The maps here include a large chart of the Fiji Islands as well as charts of Tongataboo the Gambier Islands the Marquesas Tahiti and the Duff Group; the plates include an engraved view of Rio de Janeiro. Wilson is identified as the author of the main body of the work in the Advertisement which explains that he put it together from the captain's papers as well as his own and from the missionaries' reports. The Hill catalogue notes that 'the long "preliminary discourse" was anonymously written by Samuel Greatheed using the then-unpublished narrative of James Morrison one of the pardoned Bounty mutineers. Morrison's manuscript was also the source for the extensive appendix on Tahiti. Indeed William Wilson and James Morrison may be called co-authors of this book.'. According to the map expert Dorothy F. Prescott 'the Wilson book contained a map that actually used the words "Greater Australia" - taking in Captain Cook's map of the south and east coasts of Van Diemens Land. this map would have influenced Matthew Flinders.'. Flinders is traditionally said to have been the first to use the term "Australia" in a voyage context: the Duff account appeared about fifteen years earlier. There is much of Australian interest in the account of the voyage including a mention of escaped Botany Bay convicts and the flight of several missionaries from Tonga where three were killed to Sydney.
