Farson Daniel
A Dry Ship to the Mountains : Down the Volga and Acroos the Cucasus in My Father;s Footsteps
London: Michael Joseph. 1994 "Daniel Farson had a lifelong yearning to complete his father's 1929 attempt to cross the Klukhor Pass in the Caucasus on horseback. At sixty-four "abominably unhealthy" he determined to try. He envisaged a restful though jolly cruise down the Volga and an idyllic journey across the great mountain range. How wrong he was. The Pipkin - as Farson named the unpronounceable ship - lacked romance comfort and to his dismay alcohol; "niet" delivered with satisfaction was the unusual responose to every request even for water. Coinciding with the 1991 coup he joined bewildered crowds ashore demanding "Where is Gorbachev" Back aboard he was interrogated by the KGB. When he eventually reached the Caucasus his ardous climb became increasingly fraught as the horses collapsed and the porters deserted him on the day of the ascent. But the journey - which Farson contrasts tellingly with his father's - was as enriching as it was unpredictable. He warmly recalls the exceptional friendships he made - with Vladimir an invaluable ally on the Pipkin his loyal interpreter Yuri and his guide Ali whom he could trust with his life - and the overwhelming hospitality he received. With critical insight and enthusiasm he conveys his curiosity about the Caucasian past. And in the stupendous scale infinite variety and charming village life of the mountains he experienced the magic of the Caucasus. Farson's narrative is a delight distinguished by his observation of Russia and its people at a traumatic moment humour and honest in the face of adversity - and not least his sheer relish of adventure.' 245p. illus. index. maps on endpapers. 1st.UK Ed.
