Washington D.C.: Robert Armstrong Public Printer 1853. Hardcover. Very Good. 2 volumes: 414 iii 1 p. 16 leaves of plates: tables; 3 folded maps of varying sizes; 23 cm. Contemporary burgundy morocco-grained cloth. Text volume has gilt-stamped spine title and blind-stamped emblem on each board with "U.S." in the center. Map volume has gilt-stamped cover title "Herndon's Valley of the Amazon Maps Part I" and blind-stamped decoration on each board. At head of title page: "32d Congress 2d Session. Senate. Executive No. 36." Inscribed on front free endpaper ov vol. 1: "From Senator Cooper per E. Wentworth 1854." Front fixed endpaper of vol.1 bears bookplate indicating that the volume was presented to the Union Philosophical Society of Dickinson College by Sen. Cooper per Prof. E. Wentworth. Senator James Cooper 1810-1863 represented Pennsylvania in the U.S. Senate from 1849 to 1855. A resident of Gettysburg he was appointed brigadier general of volunteers during the Civil War. Erastus Wentworth 1813-1886 chaired the Natural Philosophy and Chemistry department at Dickinson College from 1850 to 1854 when he resigned to lead a Methodist mission to China where he served until 1862. Inscribed on back of one map: "Presented to the Belles Lettres Society by Hon. Chas. J. Faulkner of Virginia through John R. Poal." On back of another map is a bookplate indicating that the volume was presented to the Belles Lettres Society of Dickinson College by the Hon. C.J. Faulkner in 1854. Charles J. Faulkner 1806-1884 represented Virginia in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1851 to 1859. He served briefly as U.S. Minister to France before being arrested for negotiating sales of arms for the Confederacy. After being exchanged he enlisted in the Confederate Army and became assistant adjutant general under "Stonewall" Jackson. Text volume is in Very Good Condition: spine is sunned; head of spine fraying; foxing primarily in text and plate margins; otherwise clean and tight. Map volume is in Good Condition: lacking part of cloth over spine; call number in white on front board; folded Map of the Valley of the Amazon starting to separate along folds but still intact with discoloration along one edge; folded Plan del Curso de los Rios Huallaga & Ucayali is detached with minor loss along one edge one closed 10-cm. tear from the same edge and partially separated along horizontal fold; and the Map of the Rivers Huallaga Ucayali & Amazon is just starting to separate at corners of some folds with some discoloration at right and left edges otherwise clean and bright. <br/><br/> Robert Armstrong, Public Printer hardcover
