He joins a Ulysses reading group but finds himself more fascinated by the story behind it: Homer's The Odyssey which he'd also never read. A plan is born: to retrace Odysseus' twenty-year travels. Huler's first challenge is that nobody really knows where any of the locations actually are-finding them he says is like hunting for the Emerald City from The Wizard of Oz. Although Huler initially tries too hard to relate his slapdash wanderings to the text a ride on a Homer-themed cruise has him saying "I found myself among these magical seafarers exactly like Odysseus" he eventually gives in to the randomness of his travels and the book is all the better for it. While fighting his way onto crowded ferries or showing up in tiny hamlets with no hotel reservations he has some realizations about the man he's following and about journeying as its own reward. Huler's book is not without flaws but in essence as he himself concludes about The Odyssey's continuing appeal "the story has good bones." Un tableau physique dépliant de la Nouvelle-Espagne, la carte dépliante est absente. Dans le tome I, 5 feuillets manquants ont été remplacés par des feuilles vierges à l'époque, de la p.435 à 446 ; ils concernent le chapitre VI sur le degré de civilisation des Indiens. Dans le tome 2, 6 feuillets manquants également remplacés par 6 feuillets vierges, de la p.3 à 14 ; ils concernent le chapitreé VII sur les créoles, les blancs et les Indiens. Ces feuillets étaient malheureusement absents lors de la reliure à l'époque, vers 1811. Reliure en pleine basane blonde racinée d'époque. Dos lisse orné de 2 fleurons et d'une partie centrale à la grotesque, roulette en queue et tête et en place des nerfs. Pièces de titre de veau rouge,; pièces de tomaison de veau vert. Frise d'encadrement sur les plats. Mors supérieur ouvert en queue au tome 1 sur 1,5cm. Premier feuillet de l'index du tome I restauré maladroitement en coin. Les 3 premiers feuillets du tome 2, faux-titre, titre et première page texte avec une déchirure restaurée (un manque en page de titre restauré), avec un décalage des lettres pour le texte. Au tome 5, les 2 derniers feuillets, un d'index, l'autre de publicité concernant les voyages de Humboldt portent de larges taches rousses en marge basse. Au tome 3, trace de mouillure pâle en marge haute sur le troisième feuillet. Petite trace de mouillure jaune sur les premiers feuillets du tome 4, au coin en marge haute ; sinon exemplaire bien frais dans l'ensemble. Etat descriptif le plus complet paru jusqu'alors sur la Nouvelle-Espagne, qui comprend alors non seulement le Mexique, mais également la Californie, le Nouveau Mexique, et le Texas. En compagnie du naturaliste français Aimé Bonpland, Humboldt sera présenté au roi d'Espagne Charles VI qui lui fournira papiers et permissions pour se rendre dans les colonies espagnoles.
