‎I/ Première édition de la traduction française de ces relations écrites par les jésuites Gaspar Paez (pour 1624 et 1625) et Alphonse Mendez (pour 1626) envoyés en mission en Éthiopie. Sommervogel, Bibliothèque de la compagnie de Jésus, V, 258 ; Carayon 906. Inconnu à Chadenat, Brunet et Barbier. II/ Première édition de la traduction française de ces lettres adressées de la Chine au Père Mutio Vitelleschi, général de la Compagnie de Jésus. Cordier, Bibliotheca Sinica, 815 ; Chadenat 4896. En raison du soutien qu’il apporte aux missions jésuites en Extrême-Orient, c’est pendant le « mandat » de Vitelleschi que les jésuites connaissent leur âge d’or en Chine. Les lettres présentes dans ce recueil, rédigées par un religieux, exposent ce qui s’est passé dans les missions jésuites en Chine en 1624. L’auteur de cette relation est probablement Wencelas Pantaléon Kirwitzer car il a signé la dernière des lettres. Mais le présent ouvrage a parfois été attribué au Père Darde ou au Père Jean-Baptiste Machault. Les deux premiers chapitres donnent une vision globale de la situation politique de la Chine et des progrès de la religion chrétienne dans ce pays à l’époque. Les autres lettres témoignent de la situation des diverses missions établies à travers tout le pays. Kirwitzer est un astronome et un mathématicien qui entra chez les jésuites en 1606. Il partit en mission en Asie avec d’autres jésuites en 1618, séjourna à Goa et en Chine, où il mourut en 1626. « Curieux et rare recueil » (Chadenat). « Je crois pouvoir attribuer cette traduction au Père Darde… Elle pourrait cependant être du P. J.-B. de Machault » (Sommervogel). III/ Première édition française de la lettre écrite du Tibet par antonio de Andrade, datée du 15 août 1626. Streit V, 310; Cordier BS 2901. Antonio de Andrade, né en 1580 à Oleiros (Portugal) et mort (empoisonné) le 19 mars 1634 à Goa était un prêtre jésuite portugais, missionnaire en Inde et au Tibet. « Il se fit remarquer dès l’origine par la finesse de son esprit et la maturité de son jugement ; c’est du moins ce que nous dit Barbosa. Bientôt il passa dans les missions de l’Inde, et il arriva à Goa dans la première année du dix-septième siècle. Nommé supérieur de la résidence du Mogol, il apprit là qu’il existait au Thibet certains vestiges du christianisme ; ou plutôt il eut connaissance de ces formes extérieures du culte de Boudha, qui ont frappé d’une surprise si grande plusieurs voyageurs par leur analogie avec notre culte. Antonio de Andrade n’hésita pas à entreprendre un voyage immense ; et, revêtu de l’habit mogol, il se dirigea vers le Thibet. Ce qu’il eut à souffrir de privations dans ce voyage difficile serait trop long à raconter : il suffira de dire que, dans les contrées montueuses qui séparent l’Inde du Thibet, il eut à braver un froid assez vif pour que les doigts de ses pieds fussent gelés complètement. Il parvint enfin à Caparanga en 1624, cité qui était alors la résidence du chef militaire du Thibet. On affirme qu’il y prêcha l’Evangile, et qu’il put même édifier un temple à la Vierge, dans la construction duquel les grands de la cour se faisaient un devoir de l’aider : ce qu’il y a de certain, c’est qu’il retourna dans le Mogol, qu’il y alla chercher de nouveaux ouvriers évangéliques, et qu’il pénétra une seconde fois au Thibet, où il fut reçu avec autant d’empressement qu’il l’avait été la première fois. Ce fut alors qu’il fut élu provincial de la résidence de Goa, puis député du saint office. Barbosa prétend que les juifs de Goa lui administrèrent un poison subtil, dont il mourut. » (Biographie générale, II, 545). Antonio de Andrade fut donc le premier européen à traverser l’Himalaya, en 1624. Il faudra attendre deux siècles avant qu’un autre européen pénètre à nouveau dans la ville de Caparangue. Il fonda en 1626 la mission jésuite au Tibet et édifia alors la première église chrétienne du Tibet. Il date sa relation du 26 août 1626, date à laquelle la construction de l’église fut achevée. Il décrit dans son récit les mœurs religieuses et sociales du Tibet de l’époque, ainsi que les cérémonies bouddhistes. Carl Ritter écrivait dès 1833: "Special value attaches to the artless and candid narrative from the fact that the book is rare, that the enterprise was remarkable, and that this geographical source has been left unused for two hundred years; it opened up a mountain region, which recently has had to be scientifically rediscovered." ‎The exceedingly rare first edition of Monk Hyacinth's (i.e. Jakinf's/Iankinth's) important work on the history of Mongolia, which constitutes one of the earliest important travel accounts of the region since the middle ages. The work contains a description of Hyacinth's route up north of Mongolia (then under Manchu rule), a history of Mongolia and the Mongol regimes in China, descriptions of costumes, etc., and a section on regulations concerning the Mongols. As such, this important early work came to play a significant role in all later travel literature about Mongolia and was seen as a work of refenrence and great authority, which was frequently quoted by other writers on the field. ""Little was reported to the West about Mongolia between the thirteenth and nineteenth centuries. During this period the Mongol empire rapidly disintegrated... When Christian missionaries began arriving in (Outer) Mongolia, beginning in 1798, they found an impoverished people ruled by a ""living Buddha"", the Bogd Khan... The Catholic missionaries was followed by a wave of Protestant missionaries"" (Speake 2: 803), but most of the accounts of these missionaries are from the late nineteenth century and thus much later than Hyacinth's. ""The archimandrate Hyacinth, late chief of the Russian mission at Peking, from whnce he returned in 1821, with Mr. Timkowski, is about to publish, at St. Petersburg, an ""Account of Mongolia"", in four volumes. The first volume will contain a narrative of his journey through Mongolia, and his return from Peking to Kakhta" the second, a geographical and statistical account of Mongolia the third, a short history of the Mongols" and the fourth, the code of laws by which this nomade people is giverned. This work will contain a map of Mongolia, engravings of costumes, &c.The work was translated into German in 1832 under the title ""Denkwürdigkeiten über die Mongolei"".
