McGraw-Hill 1959. Cloth. Very Good/Good. 1st Edition; Book of the Month Club Selection viii 282pages illustrated with b/w photographs map end papers. Dark blue covers with silver titling to spine in pictorial dustjacket. Description from Book-of-the-Month Club News Clifton Fadiman: "Endurance" was the name of the ship on which Sir Ernest Shackleton began his ill-fated but strangely triumphant Imperial Trans-Antartic Expedition. Endurance was the single greatest trait of character on which he and his men drew during the whole of their voyage. It WAS incredible. Indeed even readers old enough to remember newspaper accounts of the expedition will find themselves wondering to the very last pages how these men can possibly extricate themselves. As difficulty after difficulty arises - as one hope after another is blasted - the suspense builds up until it is well nigh unbearable. ENDURANCE: Shackleton's Incredible Voyage
McGraw-Hill 1959. Early Edition. Cloth. Fair Condition/Poor. 2nd impression London: Hodder and Stourton 1959. 287pages I 20 photographs map end papers. Blue cloth covers with gilt titling to spine in pictorial price clipped dustjacket. Ernest Shackleton's third Antarctic expedition sailed from London. His ship was the Endurance but little did her complement know that their own endurance would be tested to the full after the ship was trapped in the ice in the Weddell Sea late in 1915 and had to be abandoned. This was the beginning of a struggle for survival with 28 men with three small boats striking out by sledge and boat across the hazardous Weddel Sea for Elephant Island. Their journey took from Christmas 1915 to April 1916. From the island Shackleton with a crew of five others left on April 24 to sail one of the small boats to South Georgia which they reached on May 10. This has become one of the epic small boat voyages of all time but it was to be the end of August before the remaining survivors could be rescued from Elephant Island. A remarkable story of beating all the odds. First printed September 1959 this second impression November 1959. Gift inscription on half title. Dustjacket worn and split. ESKIMO CHILDHOOD AND INTERPERSONAL RELATIONSHIPS: Nunivak Biographies and Genealogies
University of Washington Press 1960. Cloth. Very Good. 1st Edition; xv 215pp illustrated b/w photographs illustrations charts 1 map. Blue cloth covers with yellow titling in pictorial dustjacket. "This is . my principal reason for presenting the personal histories here. They are fragmentary compared with the book-length biographies obtained from a few Indians of the United States but they do show the personal aspects of those customs that anthropologists usually describe so impersonally e. g. marriage adoption the making of a hunter and the child's instruction in religion and social relationships. We see in the reminiscences of several people probably better than in one long autobiography the variance in culture even in a small isolated group. Also it is hoped we see not 'the Nunivak Eskimos' but individuals." Contents clean. Very Good Quantity Available: 1. Shipped Weight: Under 1 kilogram.
