FREEDOM'S VOICE: THE PERILOUS PRESENT AND UNCERTAIN FUTURE OF THE FIRST AMENDMENT.
Washington: Brassey's 1998. 177 pp large 8vo 9 3/16" H. "The U.S. Constitution's First Amendment ensures freedom of speech and expression but it has come increasingly under attack at the end of the twentieth century. Created two hundred years ago to protect unpopular views to allow criticism of the government to enable religious freedom and to give citizens a voice in government its protection has recently been exploited by those who would douse a crucifix in urine burn an American flag or harass abortion clinic employees to name just a few examples. As a result many question its guarantees. This book chronicles the numerous assaults on free speech and expression that have occurred recently and shows how the lives of many ordinary citizens have been or would be affected adversely by the loss of First Amendment freedoms. Richards argues clearly and effectively that a strengthened not weakened First Amendment is necessary to meet the challenges of the new millenium." Dust jacket has minor edge wrinkling minor rubbing small shallow dent on front hinge. First Edition. Hard Cover. Near Fine/Very Good. Brassey's Hardcover

PRESIDENCY BY PLEBISCITE. The Reagan-Bush Era In Institutional Perspective.
Westview Press: 1993. 164 pages. "The U.S. presidency has been characterized in a variety of ways- imperial impossible imperiled; personal plural postmodern- depending on the era and who was in office. In this book the author outlines the attributes of the plebiscitary presidency a form of the office that dates from the FDR period but has been most fully exploited by Ronald Reagan. By contrasting the Reagan and Bush administrations the author points up the shortcomings of a presidency that operates by plebiscite and directs us toward a new standard for electing and evaluating presidents- one that insists on a respect for institutional limitations and effective citizen participation." Robert S. Weddle
San Juan Bautista: Gateway to Spanish Texas
Austin Texas: University of Texas Press 1968. First Edition. Cloth. Near fine/very good. A near fine first edition in a very good price clipped dust jacket. Orange cloth boards. From the private library of Larry Southwick collector's marginalia pencilled near front hinge. Mild soil marks to last free end paper. Dust jacket showing toning at spine and two tiny closed tears. Dust jacket now protected in a clear removable archival cover. 469 pp. including bibliography and index. Octavo. In their efforts to assert dominion over vast reaches of the now U.S. Southwest in the seventeenth century the Spanish built a series of far-flung missions and presidios at strategic locations. One of the most important of these was San Juan Bautista del Ro Grande located at the present-day site of Guerrero in Coahuila Mexico. Despite its significance as the main entry point into Spanish Texas during the colonial period San Juan Bautista was generally forgotten until the first publication of this book in 1968. Weddle's narrative is a fascinating chronicle of the many religious military colonial and commerical expeditions that passed through San Juan and a valuable addition to knowledge of the Spanish borderlands. It won the Texas Institute of Letters Amon G. Carter Award for Best Southwest History in 1969. University of Texas Press hardcover
