The ink inscription on the title page by Markham reads, 'Charles C. Bowen with the translator's affectionate regards, Dec 9th, 1864'. This is the 33rd publication of the first series of the Hakluyt Society and includes Markham's translation of the original edition printed in Antwerp in 1554 as well as his detailed 40 page introduction that provides a good historical perspective and biographical details of Cieza de Leon. Markham had become an expert on Peru and on the native peoples there, having researched and written several works on the subject. Cieza de Leon's work provides an important reference of the time. He was the first European to give a name to the avocado and likely the first to write of the potato, which would be introduced to Europe. His was the first account of the Spanish conquest of Peru and provides details on the Incas, their customs, institutions, beliefs, economy, military. He was a sympathetic observer of the Spanish caused carnage and provides a valuable first-hand account of the area and the peoples.

NMM Cat Vol 2 Pt 1 entry 805: McClintock's first Arctic service was with Sir James Clark Ross on his second expedition in search of a North West Passage 1848-49. He accompanied Ommanery's 1850-51 espedition as first lieutenant of the Assistance. During this expedition he made a sledge journey of seven hundred and sixty miles in eighty days. He commanded the Intrepid in Belcher's 1852-54 expedition the last of those officially sent out to discover the fate of Sir John Franklin. In 1857 at the request of Lady Franklin McClintock sailed in the Fox to search for Franklin again. The Fox returned in 1859 having found many relics including a written record of its fate. In 1872 McClintock became admiral-superintendent of Portsmouth dockyard and in 1879 was commander-in-chief West Indies. This is the first UK edition. Quantity Available: 1. Ces planches sont des mises en scènes avec plusieurs personnages par planches, masculins et féminins, dans le décor de leur vie quotidienne. Les illustrations sont l'œuvre des frères Rouargues. Quelques rousseurs sur quelques feuillets de texte, sinon bel exemplaire.
