Also with two manuscript wedding speeches in German written in black ink on paper two mounted albumen prints the first showing two actors dressed as a Frisian farmer and his wife and the other showing a man in Chinese dress 56 large ornamental vignettes printed in red or blue throughout 17 ornamental tailpieces printed in black blue and red and some dried flowers mounted on several leaves. 60 ll. A sumptuously executed wedding album presented to the Dutch groom August Janssen 1865-1918 and his bride Ella de Ridder 1877-1951 produced in honour of their wedding celebrations which took place on 24-26 August 1896 in Frankfurt am Main Germany. Most of the album concerns their "Polterabend" the wedding-eve party similar to present-day bachelor-/bachelorette parties except for the bride and groom joining together in the festivities. The main event now associated with a Polterabend is the smashing of porcelain by the wedding guests in order to bring luck to the couple's marriage but in general the evening is filled with plays and songs written and performed for the couple by their family and friends.A few performing actors were members of the Janssen-family a Dutch business family who had amassed their fortune with the tobacco cultivation in the former Dutch East Indies. They were also known for their generosity and philanthropic activities in the Netherlands. At the head of this family was the German-Dutch merchant Peter Wilhelm Janssen 1821-1903 one of the founders of the Deli Maatschappij in Sumatra and father of the groom who was his second son. His eldest son Christian Wilhelm Janssen 1860-1927 was married to Susanna Dorothea Anna Rehbock 1862-1933. Her brother the Dutch merchant Heinrich Carl Rehbock 1865-1938 was married to Caroline Janssen 1871-1951 one of the five daughters of Peter Wilhelm Janssen. Among the other actors were the brother of the bride Gustave von Ridder 1874-1956 the German playwright Hermann Otto Rudolf Presber 1868-1935 the German lawyer Paul Roediger 1859-1938 and his Dutch wife Julie Louise Charlotte Elink Schuurman 1875-1961 the sisters Anna Maria Humser 1876-1974 and Elisabeth Else Humser 1872-1967 daughters of the German lawyer and politician Gustav Adolph Humser 1836-1918 who was chairman of the Frankfurt city council at the time of the wedding celebration. The groom August Janssen 1864-1918 started his business career at trade offices in Bremen and London. He subsequently left for the former Dutch East Indies where he founded several enterprises. His wealth enabled him to engage in philanthropic activities. For example the municipality of Baarn benefited from his generosity he erected two public swimming pools there at his own expense. The bride Ella Elisabeth de Ridder 1877-1951 was the only daughter of the Belgian-German merchant August Cornelius de Ridder 1837-1911 known for his distinguished art collection of mainly Dutch and Flemish paintings of the 17th century which he built at his house at Kronberg near Frankfurt am Main. The famous Anglo-Hungarian artist Philip Alexius de László 1869-1937 painted Ellas portrait in 1903 in Baarn at the house of Hendrik Cornelis van den Honert 1854-1916 the successor of Peter Wilhelm Janssen as director of the Deli Maatschappij in 1898. De László had also painted her mother Johanna Elisabethe Louise May 1853-1942 around 1898 and two of her children in 1908.A unique wedding album of two members of prominent German-Dutch business families written and printed in 1896 as a special single copy publication. The album was produced in Amsterdam by Johan K. Koning who took care of the calligraphy of the texts and the printing of the divisonal titles explanatory leaves and vignettes. The spine and edges and corners of the boards show signs of wear with some minor loss of material at the foot of the sipne and the tips of the corners of the boards the leather is somewhat faded adn scratched all without affecting the general clarity of the tooling or the integrity of the binding. [WORLD WAR II] [GERMANY] TUCHOLSKY, Kurt (text); HEARTFIELD, John (design)
Deutschland Deutschland Ueber Alles
Berlin: Neuer Deutscher Verlag 1929. First German Edition. First Printing cloth issue with 1.-20. Tausend printed on title page. Octavo 24cm; yellow decorative cloth with photomontage by John Heartfield applied to covers and titles stamped in black on spine; yellow topstain; 231pp 5; illus; text is in German. Contemporary October 1929 owner's name penciled to front endpaper; slight forward lean light overall dust-soil to cloth with pictorial elements well-preserved and largely unrubbed; browning to endpapers with mild wear to base of spine; a presentable copy Very Good lacking the rare dustjacket. A powerful piece of social criticism by Tucholsky one of the most prominent German-Jewish authors and journalists of the Weimar Republic. Produced with graphic designer John Heartfield Tucholsky managed to combine vicious attacks on everything he disliked about Germany with a declaration of love for his country. He warned of a government with anti-democratic tendencies and the impending threat of National Socialism - a plea almost to revolutionize a dormant country - though his fears were realized in 1933 when Hitler assumed the position of Chancellor of Germany. Axel Eggebrecht one of Tucholsky's contemporaries said of Deutschland: "If this book were to turn out to be quite a big success it might be realized that the dream of awakening is still very vivid in Germany." Deutschland was listed on the Nazis list of censored books and though it did go through a second printing few enough survived destruction.

The present example is one of apparently two variant bindings for the first printing with no extablished priority known to us. While the pictorial cloth binding is the variant we have seen and handled most often we note another in yellow cloth without the pictorial elements and titles stamped in black on spine and front cover. A well-preserved example and a high-point of Heartfield's graphic design and layout work. Pachnicke & Honnef 60a-69 p.148-161. Neuer Deutscher Verlag unknown

[World War II – Germany – Nazism] Bliwernitz, Annemarie
Looking Back. A World War II Memoir by Annemarie Bliwernitz
St. Petersburg Florida: unpublished 1974. Ninety-four typed and photocopied pages measuring 8 ½ x 11 inches in a soft binding. Binding with wear; pages generally excellent to Near Fine. Overall excellent to Near Fine. Annemarie Bliwernitz 1905–2005 née Entz was born in Notzendorf East Prussia. In 1952 after surviving both World Wars she and her husband Bruno 1900–1992 immigrated first to Canada and then to the United States. Offered here is Annemarie’s unpublished memoir written between 1972 and 1974.

Bliwernitz grew up in a wealthy land-owning country family which she remembers lived far west enough that they did not have to flee the Russians during World War I and was less affected by the postwar economic situation than were city residents. Most of the memoir is taken up by Bliwernitz’s remembrances of World War II and life leading up to it. Of Hitler’s rise she writes:

“During these years conditions got worse in Germany . A new name came up ‘Adolf Hitler.’ – It was not hard for him to find followers now by the thousands and soon by the millions. He dared to stand up against the Communists with his brown uniformed S.A. men and a new wind seemed to blow over our illfated land. No wonder young people looked up to him and followed the new star nobody had much to lose. . Bruno and brother-in-law Willy after some meetings attended showed up in the new brown uniform also and farmers and laborers seemed to be united in that new idea. – It really changed Germany in a short time nobody could deny that unemployment ceased people got jobs again and housewives and mothers could buy the necessities of life for their families especially food. And it brought us to our feet again also.â€

Though of course Bliwernitz maintains that the “Concentration Camps and what happened in them was not known to the German people" she mentions that Bruno quickly became an Arbeitsdienstführer—essentially a labor camp overseer—and remembers dissenters being disappeared:

“As an example I will tell about Bruno’s oldest brother Alfred. He was all against Hitler from the beginning. One day he came home and picked up his neighbor’s paper at his frontdoor and wrote his ideas about Hitler and his lies down with pencil. This neighbor reported him they picked him up and that was the last his family saw of him. They were told ½ year later that he had died in Stuhm West Prussia a Concentration Camp. No explanation to his wife whatsoever. The same destiny happened to my co-worker a highly educated person at the Translation Office. She said in the lavatory where many ladies could hear: Hitler’s big picture in the office should be placed here in the toilet-rooms where it belongs. One of the ‘kind’ co-workers reported her and she came next day only to pick up her belongings and was not seen any more.â€

While Bruno is sent to the Eastern Front Bliwernitz and their children flee the Russians trying to reach the Americans on the Western Front. Along the way they encounter deserting German soldiers and near Hamburg liberated camp inmates:

“Shooting started close to us and we heard bombs exploding would we be hit We found out that the Concentration Camp near us had been opened and those freed inmates had shot their guardians. At daybreak we met the first one still in his black and white striped prison-suit kneeling on the ground by the chicken-coop and with his both hands feeding himself out of the bowl with the chicken food. . They came to us begging for a little bit of salt to cook the horse-meat they had cut out of the dead horses lying along the ditches . We talked to them and I remember one told me he was imprisoned because of his religion not to go to any war. He was from Elbing where I had gone to school as a young girl.â€

The family are reunited with Bruno and shortly before they surrender to the Americans they destroy the evidence of their party involvement: “Bruno’s N.S.D.A.P. membership-card my certificate for the ‘mother’s cross’ the passports of Horst and Juergen showing that they had been students of the Nazi-school in Stuhm etc.†After the German surrender the family is sent back east where they struggle to avoid starvation then return west where they are sent to live in Hardegsen. They finally decide in 1951 to emigrate as life in postwar Germany is simply too difficult but make the mistake of being honest about their history:

“Another big obstacle for us was that Bruno had been in a member in a Nazi-party though not an active one. But it was still a handicap in those days for any undertaking. We had not kept it secret in our immigration papers and they wanted a detailed description about our political involvement. That we did wrote a long letter in German didn’t have the money for an interpreter and never got an answer. . That was a bitter pill to swallow.â€

After this they decide to try for Canada instead and this time savvily “didn’t mention any Nazi-party attachmentâ€. This is a success; the family moves to Winnipeg and eventually to St. Petersburg Florida where the narrative was written. Bliwernitz recalls working as a housekeeper which she contrasts with her previous life in which she and her family would not allow maids farm hands or tradesmen to eat at their table with them.

Of interest to historians of the German civilian experience during the Second World War especially that of women and children. unpublished unknown

A cura di M. Ferrari e A. Venturelli.
Theodor Wiesengrund Adorno.
International reception of Adorno?s work began in 1954 with the publication of the Italian translation of his ?Minima Moralia? Therefore research into its history and that of some of its protagonists constitutes an important chapter in the evolution of the cultural dialogue between Italy and Germany and of the influence this can have on an international level. Today the reception of Adorno is still a sort of prism which reflects many topics, different disciplines and diverse cultural sensibilities. 535 gr. viii-286 p.
