‎La Terre et les Hommes. – Germains et Latins. – Les Francs et l'Empire Carolingien. — "Ce petit ouvrage de M. Pierre Gaxotte est dense. L'Allemagne aurait pu naître, comme la Gaule, la Gaule gallo-romaine que Clovis a prise en charge, de l'éducation que Rome lui eût donnée. Mais la Germanie a refusé cette éducation le jour où Varus fut vaincu dans la forêt de Teutoburg par les bandes d'Arminius. Cette première victoire du nationalisme germanique, écrit M. Gaxotte, fut aussi le premier grand malheur de l'Allemagne. Devant le désastre Tibère agit "en souverain économe" et renonça a l'occupation complète de la Germanie, qui fut désormais coupée en deux, la partie qui était en deçà du limes et celle qui restait au delà. On pourrait trouver dans cette division l'explication de l'éternel déchirement allemand entre la culture que l'Occident reçut de Rome et l'ivresse des légendes montées des profondes origines. Mais l'Allemagne n'était pas née, elle ne naquit que huit siècles plus tard, quand Charlemagne reprit la tâche abandonnée par Tibère. Malgré l'autre essai de révolte tenté par les Saxons, il fit l'unité. Celle-ci ne dura pas, on le sait. La faiblesse des partages que les Carolingiens avaient hérités des Francs la remit en question. Mieux, ou plus exactement pire, la division de l'empire en trois tronçons devait faire de l'État intermédiaire, la Lotharingie, l'enjeu des divisions futures. Mais cette fois l'Allemagne était née, celle qui commence au delà du Rhin." Mai 2015 in New York City) war ein US-amerikanischer Historiker mit Schwerpunkten im Zeitalter der Aufklärung und des Bürgertums sowie in der Psychoanalyse. ... Er besuchte ab 1933 das Goethe-Gymnasium in Berlin, wurde aber 1938 als Nichtarier von der Schule verwiesen. Im April 1939 emigrierte die Familie aufgrund deutschen Judenverfolgung nach Kuba und 1941 in die USA nach New York City. Seit 1943 nannte die Familie sich Gay, 1946 erhielt Peter Gay die amerikanische Staatsbürgerschaft. Gay studierte ab 1943 an der Universität Denver und ab 1946 an der Columbia University, wo er 1951 promoviert wurde und eine Stelle als Assistenzprofessor erhielt. Seit 1969 war Gay Professor für Geschichte an der Yale University (emeritiert seit 1993) und Direktor des Dorothy and Lewis B. Calman Centers für Wissenschaftler und Schriftsteller an der New York Public Library. Für seine Werke erhielt Gay unter anderem 1967 den National Book Award und 1969 den Ralph-Waldo-Emerson-Preis der Phi Beta Kappa-Gesellschaft. 1983/1984 war Peter Gay Fellow des Wissenschaftskollegs zu Berlin.
