Browne, G. (George) Lathom.
The Life of Horatio, Lord Nelson.
Duodecimo. Pp. x, 181. With full-page maps and battle plans. Charming engraved vignette illustrations, often as tail-pieces. Hardcover, bound in the original publisher's navy blue cloth, sides ornately embossed in blind, upper cover with naval illustration in gilt, spine decorated and lettered in gilt, all edges gilt; some wear to spine-ends, old signature to first flyleaf. In a very good condition. A clean, handsome copy. ~ Scarce. Published under the direction of the Committee of general literature and education, appointed by the Society for promoting Christian knowledge. George Lathom Browne (1815-1892) wrote "Nelson: The public and private life of Horatio, Viscount Nelson as told by himself, his comrades, and his friends" (1891); and "Wellington: or, the public and private life of Arthur, first Duke of Wellington, as told by himself, his comrades, and his intimate friends" (1889); as well as many books on public law. "No description of a man as he really is, surpasses that which is contained in the plain straightforward relation of his thoughts, feelings, acts, and intentions, in private letters designed for the perusal of those alone to whom they were addressed," he writes in the Preface to "The Life of Horatio". "The letters of Nelson are all evidently written for the correspondent alone (.) there the heart speaks rather than the head, and the man appears without disguise. From them the following sketch has been drawn: in no way pretending to a comparison with the beautiful narrative of Southey, but hoping to compensate for its inferiority in style by its greater correctness in facts."

(Portielje, Gerrit).
Octavo. Pp. viii, 155. Large engraved title-vignette. Engraved title-page. Half-title "De Militaire Spectator". Hardcover, bound in contemporary half cloth and marbled boards; light foxing to title. In fine condition. A very well kept copy. ~ First edition. Very rare. The identity of the POW "British Officer" remained a mystery and it is just as well a fictitious personality. In any event the source for the book is an article in the German magazine "Unterhaltungsblätter für Welt- und Menschenkunde" which the publisher, Gerrit Portielje, saw sometime in 1826 and translated into Dutch. No further biographical details were provided or could be found.

Richard, Jules (Thomas-Jules-Richard Maillot); L. du Paty; Louis [Isaac] Trinquier; A. Souze.
La Jeune Armée. Illustrée d'aquarelles et de dessins.
Quarto. Pp. 315 (verso blank). Plus 40 leaves of hand-coloured plates, including frontispiece. Large armorial head- and tail-pieces, illustrated initials. Title-page printed in red and black, and with handsome armorial device. Half-title present. Hardcover, bound in the original publisher's full lavishly decorated cloth by A. Souze, large armorial illustration in gold, black, and silver within elaborate frame, gilt lettering to cover and spine, illustration to spine and lower cover, all edges gilt. The binding incorporates a second, elaborately decorated original paper cover, printed separately by the Paris firm of Draeger et Lesieur, beautifully illustrated and hand-coloured, gilt, blue, and red lettering within gold frame; spine ends bit worn, first inner hinges slightly cracked. In a very good condition. Handsome book, well preserved. ~ First edition. Jules Richard (Thomas-Jules-Richard Maillot) (1825-1899). Louis Isaac Trinquier (1853-1922). The lively plates are the result of a complicated and delicate process, now obsolete, which was invented in the early 1850's by Firmin Gillot. Known as Gillotage, the process turned a lithographic drawing into a relief plate. Employing both planographic and relief methods, the process remained purely manual, involving no photography. The lithograph was transferred to zinc and then etched, in an extremely laborious process, to make a metal relief block from which the final print was made. Noteworthily, many of Daumier's lithographic plates were treated in this way before their publication. Here, the plates are delicately hand-coloured by contemporary hand, rich in detail, and in a particularly good condition.

Tiedemann, B. (Benno) von.
Der Festungskrieg im Feldzuge gegen Frankreich 1870-1871. Mit 19 lithographiretn Plänen.
Crown quarto. Pp. vi, 271. Plus 19 fine lithograph maps, some of which are folding, bound at end. Hardcover, bound in contemporary quarter calf and marbled boards, green vellum French corners, spine with false raised bands between compartments, gilt lettering direct; boards were partly detached at one time and inner hinges were expertly strengthened and joints mended; old military institutional stamps to title-page and verso of maps, discreet magnetic strip at bottom of one page, even browning to some maps, some spotting. Withal a respectful tome in good condition. ~ First edition. Very rare. Jordan 3768; Baldamus II, 52. See also: B. E. Palat: "Bibliographie générale de la guerre de 1870-1871" (Paris, 1896), p. 464. The charm of this book lies in the wonderful lithographic maps which clearly were not meant to serve as mere carriers of information but to provide charm and elegance due to their artistic merit. Six of the maps have a hole dug into them close to the blank margin, probably a rodent's activity, with very minor loss. They were all expertly restored by professional hand. One has the repair clearly in the blank margin and two others in practically blank areas of the image.
