1916réf. 0009183CAMP COTTON EL PASO TEXAS TX. Good. 1916. On offer is a fascinating journal kept by an officer or high ranking NCO at Camp Cotton in El Paso Texas. He appears to be an officer with the 9th Massachusetts infantry fresh off training from Camp Framingham in Massachusetts who have come down to Camp Cotton. It appears that the troops were sent down to Camp Cotton to take place in the Pancho Villa Expedition attempting to hunt down Mexican Revolutionary Pancho Villa for his role in attacking New Mexico though they may have also been used to provide support for the ongoing Border War between Mexico and America. Beginning in June of 1916 and ending in September of the same year the journal documents the daily every day duties of the officer's command. Such looks into the darily Army command responsibilities in the early 20th century are not easy to come by. Such daily entries offer fantastic glimpses as to the uniform routine and daily activities of the officers and the enlisted men. One entry even goes over each detail of a meeting in which the Infantrys camp was set up:El Paso. Camp Cotton. Sunday July 2 1916. 1st meeting 11 am. Push all work till next meeting later in day. 2nd meeting 5-20 pm. Capt. Lawless will require spare parts and cleaning materials. Tops. 10 pm. Roll call chief and repeat to Regmt. Officers can buy for cash at Depot Quartermaster. Draw for Enlisted Men: 1 hat 1 cord. 1 O.T. shirt. 6 jean undershirts. 6 jean underdrawers. Belt if necessary. 3 breeches - cotton. 1 pr. Leggings. 6 pr. Socks for work. 1 pr. Shoes. 4 pr. Leggings laces. 4 pr. Shoe laces. All men must have one new outfit at all times. The above will be paid for by each man from his ____ of $4.00 for 1set 6 mos. Then $6 or $7 allowance for each 6 mos thereafter. Muster In Rolls. Col. Buck is sending the roll for correction. they must bear names of all officers and men. Ammunition 100 rds must be issued to each man. 6:30 pm. Recd 5 cases of 1200 rounds each from Capt. Lawless same as usual. At 7 pm each man recd 90 rounds which is all they belt can carry. Balance for present will be held by 1st srgt in his tent for immediate distribution. Tents must be ditched and cinders placed in Company seets. Calls Reveiller at 6am and all other calls same as those need used at Framingham. Tents Loop up early in morning drop at 9 am until further advised. Cots Request in for cots. Mess An officers mess will be established. Pay It is understood that Col. Parker is on his way here and will arrange to pay men for 8 days from Mass state funds. There are many more meetings in the new few days as the camp is set up for the soldiers arriving soon to the Camp. The men arrive a few days later around July 11th. There is an officer's meetings: 11 July. Meeting at 10 am. Meat only 2 times a day. Coffee twice a day. Muster and pay bills. Men to keep away from the citizens of the city. Physical inspection this weekend. Thereafter once a week. There is a tremendous amount of information about the nitty gritty details of running a camp full of enlisted men in the early 20th century. What to do if men go AWOL What happens when they are ready to be discharged Who will set up the latrine What supplies to order for the cook staff Who will staff the canteen and what will be served All these details come from the many notes the author took in the twice daily officers meetings held at the camp. The journal ends with notes on a 15 day hike about to take place. This hike may very well be the Infantry getting ready to hunt down Pancho Villa in Mexico though it is unknown: Revelle 4:45 am. Men carry two blankets. One man left believed in prison. Regtl surgeon will decide men who are to be excused. Carry 3 days dry components. Have men report to Capt. Doly 5:30 am. There journal is an absolute wealth of fascinating information and provides a really great amount of daily officer work and details of the life of an enlisted man on the border of the U.S. and Mexico during the Mexican Revolution. The books cover and spine are still in good condition. The covers are marbled paper and show some wear and fading. The book opens from top to bottom not from right to left. There are approximately 65 handwritten pages and the book itself is 110 pages in length. The paper is still in good condition showing only minimal wear and aging. While the binding is still intact it is no longer very tight. The book should be handled with care. The handwriting is clear throughout in pencil. There is so smudging and fading in a few pages but in general the handwriting is clear and legible. The Pancho Villa Expeditionnow known officially in the United States as the Mexican Expedition but originally referred to as the "Punitive Expedition U.S. Army"was a military operation conducted by the United States Army against the paramilitary forces of Mexican revolutionary Francisco "Pancho" Villa from March 14 1916 to February 7 1917 during the Mexican Revolution of 19101920. The expedition was launched in retaliation for Villa's attack on the town of Columbus New Mexico and was the most remembered event of the Border War. The 19th incunable of the Islamic world, printed by Ibrahim Müteferrika's legendary Basmahane. The publication of Ottoman chronicles which began in 1734 with the edition of Naimâ's history, continued after a long break in 1783. This volume, containing the works of three court chroniclers who followed each other in rapid succession, is a chronological continuation of Mehmed Râsid's history, published by Müteferrika. Arpaemînizâde Mustafa Sâmî (deceased 1734) was the court's historian from 1730 to 1733, Sâkir Hüseyin (died 1742) in 1733, and Subhî Mehmed (ca. 1711-1769) from 1739 to 1745. The work of the three chroniclers is known as one coherent historiography, which presents the events of Ottoman history from 1730 to 1744. This work is a particularly valuable source on the Habsburg-Ottoman war between 1736 and 1739, in which Subhî participated in person. The prestige of the work, which offers detailed data on the administrative events (appointments, dismissals, and other biographical communications) is further increased by the fact that Subhî in many cases used original documents. This chronicle includes the events between the years 1730-1743. Contents: Ahd-i Humâyûn [i.e. Imperial constitutional declaration]., Zikr-i tecdîd-i san'at-i tab' [i.e. Preface on the Muteferrika Press of Vasif Efendi]., Fihrist-i târîh-i Sami ve Sakir ve Subhi [i.e. Contents of the work]., Text., History of Subhi. The workshop of Müteferrika began its historical mission in 1728. They published 17 works in 22 volumes. The printing house served as a means to the long-term goal of Müteferrika, his efforts to broaden the horizon and modernize the knowledge of Ottoman society and Islamic civilization. This is evidenced by the subjects of the books selected for publishing, the motivations put forth in the publisher's introductions, as well as by the documents illuminating the background of the publication of each book, also published in print. In 1742, with the publication of the Persian dictionary of Hasan Suûrî, a chapter of Ottoman book printing came to an end. With the death of Müteferrika, the printing of Turkish books was temporarily interrupted. The first generation of Ottoman-Turkish prints was soon followed by a new series when in 1756 Ahmed and Ibrâhîm Efendi (the latter perhaps the founder's son, according to speculative sources) made an attempt to resurrect the legacy of Müteferrika through the possession of a decree obtained from the Sultan. However, this experiment did not prove to be lasting, as it did not last longer than the new edition of the first Turkish printed book, the Lugat-i Vankûlî. After this, for several decades there was no continuation to the Turkish book printing established by Müteferrika, until in 1783 the workshop was put in operation again for the publication of six more works. The subjects of these late 18th century works were dominated by history and military technology, thus Müteferrika's strategy of book distribution made its way hand in hand with the efforts of modernization of the Ottoman state. The second edition of Lugat-i Vankûlî followed the principles of the first edition, and its introduction was composed on the model of the introductory pages of the two last books published under Müteferrika's supervision. The works published after 1783 display a noticeable development in typography not only as to its somewhat refined visual impression but also in its structure. For example, the d+h and r+h ligatures, (For more info please visit our website)

Süleymân Izzî succeeded Mehmed Subhî Efendi (ca. 1711 - 1769) in 1745 as an official court historian (vaka'nüvis) and held this office until 1753, and is known as one of the three chroniclers for coherent historiography, representing the events in the Ottoman history from 1730 to 1744 and is a particularly valuable source on the Habsburg-Ottoman War between 1736 and 1739, as proven by his chronicle titled "Tevârîh-i Sâmî ve Sâkir ve Subhî", published in 1784. During this time, he recorded the contemporary events taking place between 1744 and 1753 in the Ottoman Empire. This work was the last item in a series of chronicles published by the printing house founded by Müteferrika. Franz Babinger writes that some parts of the book have been translated into German. Hammer translated one of the parts in question into German. All published, Izzi has planned the third part of his work, but this third part was never published. With 1 engraved double-page plate 4 lithographed colour-plates and 22 albumen photographs with guard leaves containing text. 2 works in 1 volume. Rare first and only edition of a report on the investigation of tea cultivation and production in Assam India and Ceylon. The Dutch cultural association Cultuur Maatschappij in Palakan-Salak asked H.J.Th. Netscher and Alexander Albert Holle to investigate the Assam and Ceylon tea cultivation and production with regard to the economic position of Java tea in the world market. Netscher and Holle had their investigations on tea cultivation and culture in British India and Ceylon printed but never put them on the market merely giving some copies to parties concerned with the tea industry. They gave the present copy to Norbert Pieter van den Berg head agent of the Dutch East Indian commercial bank at Batavia and president of the Javanese bank. The report discusses various aspects of tea and its cultivation including the geographic dissemination different kinds of tea seeds the conservation of tea seeds the process of drying tea leaves and the arrangement of tea factories. But the book also describes some remarkable things that caught Netscher and Holles attention of during their journey. They write for example about sugar and elephants. Nevertheless the main purpose of their report was to gather information on British-Indian tea cultivation especially regarding competion on the world market. The 22 albumen photographs in the present copy inserted through the whole book show mainly the tea gardens of Assam and Ceylon but also elephants and landscapes Netscher and Holle saw on their journey. A sign for that at least some of these photographs are contemporary is that they refer to their own train on one of the pictures. These pictures give this extensive and important report on tea cultivation enriching insights into the tea cultivation in British-India and Ceylon ca. 1900.Presentation copy from the Cultuur Maatschappij Parakan-Salak to Norbert Pieter van den Berg with some bolts at the end of the book unopened. 1885réf. ABC_47212Vienna: Carl Gerold's Sohn 1885. Contemporary half brown cloth with the original publisher's printed wrappers mounted on the boards. Large 8vo. With 3 lithographed folding maps one coloured showing the route of His Majesty's Ship Aurora along the east coast of South America. First edition of an account of the 8-month expedition to circumnavigate the globe in 1884-1885 by His Majesty's Ship Aurora a vessel launched by the Kaiserliche und Königliche Kriegsmarine Austro-Hungarian Imperial and Royal Navy to Brazil and the Río de la Plata basin. This voyage commanded by Victor Bosquet was primarily intended as practical training for naval cadets but also helped to facilitate the trade between South America and the Austro-Hungarian Empire as well as political and economic interests. On 27 August 1884 the corvette Aurora sailed from Pola to Gibraltar and further via St. Cruz on Tenerife to Bahia. After a short stay of about ten days the Aurora sailed to Rio de Janeiro also passing some other places to Buenos Aires and from there via Montevideo back to Pernambuco. Thereafter the Aurora sailed back to Pola via São Miguel Ponta Delgada and Gibraltar reaching Pola's central port on 25 April 1885.The present account drawing on the reports of the commanders of the Aurora paints a detailed picture of its voyage including some hydrographic navigational and meteorological observations. These are also included in the more descriptive navigational part of the voyage. Moreover it includes some information on the places where they anchored including Bahia Pernambuco Rio de Janeiro and many more. Die Reis S.M. Corvette "Aurora" was published separately and as an appendix to volume 10 of the hydrographical journal of the Austrian-Hungarian Navy Mittheilungen aus dem Gebiete des Seewesens. Altogether a highly interesting official record of the Austro-Hungarian circumnavigation of the globe via Brazil and the Río de la Plata basin and a great source of information for the Austro-Hungarian navys trading expeditions to this region. With the library stamp of the Royal Danish maritime library "Marinens Bibliothek" on the front wrapper a stamped subject indication on the front paste-down "Sørejser. b. 1884-1886" "Sea voyages ." and an inscription in ink "Reise" on the front wrapper. Wrappers on the boards a little browned spine a little discoloured with some tears on the folds of the first lithographed map not affecting the image but otherwise in very good condition.l Borba de Moraes p. 707; WorldCat 743212274 & 780852276 3 copies. Former Owner's Signature Dated 1894 Erased In Volume 1 Of George Ernest Morrison And A Few Marginalia Which Appear To Be His; George Ernest "G. E." Morrison 1862 - 1920 Also Known As Morrison Of Peking Or Chinese Morrison Was An Australian Adventurer Appointed In February 1897 As The Times Correspondent In Peking Despite His Lack Of Knowledge In The Chinese Language. He Traveled To Vladivostok And Reported To The Times That Russian Engineers Were Making Preliminary Surveys From Kirin Towards Port Arthur Then Sent A Telegram To Say That Russia Had Presented A Five-Day Ultimatum To China Demanding The Right To Construct A Railway To Port Arthur. This Was A Triumph For The Times And Its Correspondent But He Had Also Shown Prophetic Insight In Another Phrase Of His Dispatch When He Stated That "The Importance Of Japan In Relation To The Future Of Manchuria Cannot Be Disregarded". After A Visit To Siam And England Then To Australia 1899-1900 He Returned To Peking. When The Boxer Uprising Broke Out And During The Siege Of The Legations From June To August Morrison As An Acting-Lieutenant Showed Great Courage Always Ready To Volunteer For Every Service Of Danger. After A Siege Of 55 Days The Legations Were Relieved By A Multinational Force Which Then Ransacked Much Of The Palaces In Peking With Morrison Taking Part In The Looting. There Was Great Uncertainty Regarding The Future Of China In The Following Months And Through The Times Morrison Managed To Depict A Skewed Picture Before The British Public. While Russia And Japan United In Opposing Any Dismemberment Of China The Country Was Nevertheless Punished By The Imposition Of A Heavy Indemnity. In 1904 Morrison Became A Correspondent With The Japanese Army. He Was Present At The Entry Of The Japanese Into Port Arthur Early In 1905 And Represented The Times At The Usa Peace Conference. In 1907 He Crossed China From Peking To The French Border Of Tonkin And In 1910 Rode From Honan Across Asia To Russian Turkestan. From Andijan He Took A Train To St Petersburg And Then Traveled To London Arriving On 29 July 1910. A Great Chinese Physician Dr. Wu Lien-Teh Succeeded In Staying The Spread Of This Mortal Sickness Which Seemed To Threaten The Whole World. Morrison Published A Series Of Articles Advocating The Launching Of A Modern Scientific Public Health Service In China. When The Chinese Revolution Began In 1911 Morrison Took The Side Of The Revolutionaries. In August Morrison Resigned His Position On The Times To Become Political Adviser To The Chinese Government And Immediately Went To London To Assist In Floating A Chinese Loan Of £10 Million. In China During The Following Years He Had An Anxious Time Advising And Endeavoring To Deal With The Political Intrigues That Were Continually Going On. He Visited Australia Again In December 1917 And Returned To Peking In February 1918. He Represented China During The Peace Discussions At Versailles In 1919 But His Health Began To Give Way And He Retired To England Well Aware That He Had Only A Short Time To Live. He Died On 30 May 1920 . A Nice Historical Association. Later Ownership Signatures Of G B Wilson. G. Nicol hardcover
