Cross Alexander
The Lands of the West
Glasgow: James Hedderwick & Sons Ltd. 1911. Hardcover light green cloth lettered in black with picture of cruise ship on front cover. 273pp. Illustrated from line drawings by Mr. A.P. Thompson and photographs by Mrs. Cross and others. First edition. An interseting travelogue penned by an ex-representative of Parliament from Glasgow. Line drawings are of prosaic sites and monuments but the photographs are wondrfully evocative of life in American and Canadian urban centers during the first decade of the twentieth century. As a tourist from across the pond Cross was interested in most aspects of everyday life that differed from those familiar to him back in Britain. Hence the chapter 'From the Fifteenth Floor' accompanied by a photograph; and his commentaty on the new and from his observation growing trend towards prohibition of alcohol. Neat gift inscription on front free endpaper dated 1911. Mild sporadic foxing and finger soiling to text. Covers are strong and intact with spine slightly sunned and cloth mildly faded. A solid tight internally clean copy. Good. Scans on request. First Edition. Hardcover. Good. 12mo - over 6" - 7" tall. James Hedderwick & Sons, Ltd. hardcover

RETURN FROM THE POLE
Burke Publishing Co 1953. Cloth. Very Good/Very Good. 1st Edition: The original manuscript edited with appraisal by Frederick J Pohl 254ppillustrated with 8 pages of b/w photosmaps on eps showing North Polar Region and routes taken by Cook and Peary. Red cloth with gilt titling to spine in price clipped pictorial dustjacket. Sensational vindication of the author's controversial Polar claim to have reached the North Pole in 1908. "The story of the discovery of the north pole in April 1908 and the controversy surrounding it. Who really discovered the north pole Admiral Peary or Frederick Cook Here is Dr. Cook's amazing story of his struggle back from the North Pole a record which vindicates his original claim that he and not Peary had reached the Pole first. Dr. Cook wrote this final statement in the long and bitter Cook-Peary controversy. It is possible that someday Cook's claim to the Pole will have further supporting evidence. What about Cook's later life - his spending five years in prison for fraud This book was written between 1930 and 1935 as Dr. Cook declared 'Before I die I must clear my good name.' Cook suffered a cerebral hemorrhage on May 3 1940. Two weeks later President Franklin D. Roosevelt pardoned him." Dustjacket protected in plastic sleeve old sellotape markings to dustjacket. Cross, Dorothy
CONNEMARA
Paperback, 156 pages, English, book in fine order, with lots of pictures of the coast of this part of Ireland, . ISBN 9780992690830. Working in sculpture, film and photography, Dorothy Cross examines the relationship between living beings and the natural world. Living in Connemara, a rural area on Ireland?s west coast, the artist sees nature, the ocean and the body as sites of constant change and flux. Her works harness this fluidity and generative power, staging unexpected encounters between plants, animals, body parts and everyday objects, resulting in strange, hybrid forms that range from the lyrical, sublime and meditative, to the erotic, humorous and playful. Her sculptures might incorporate classical materials such as Carrera marble, cast bronze or gold leaf alongside discarded antiques, old boats, washed up jellyfish, whale bones or animal skins found on the shore. Treating these materials with equal reverence, Cross honours the legacy of art history but also the geological and ecological histories that far predate it, reflecting upon our place within the environment. Her works also draw upon a rich store of symbolic associations across cultures to investigate the construction of religious, social and sexual mores, subjectivity, memory and vulnerability.
