In 1899 the author organized an expedition towards the North Pole. In spring he arrived in the Norwegian capital Christiania the present day Oslo with 10 companions. The duke acquired the Jason a steam whaler of 570 tons renamed it Stella Polare "Pole Star" & took the ship on the expedition through the frozen Artic Sea. The members of the expedition sought to reach the North Pole by way of Novaya Zemyla and the Franz Joseph Archipelago. They sailed as far north as possible and then continued their trek by sledge. While they did not reach the North Pole they did reach the highest latitude ever attained by sledge at that time. Both volumes covers slightly bumped and marked inner hinges beginning to crack tissue paper guards brown as usual. Contents clean. Very Good. A travel narrative in the form of fifty-two letters by two women book "peddlers" telling of their travels through the Atlantic states and Canada in 1853. They funded their expedition working as subscription booksellers which was a standard bookselling method of the time and their letters include first hand accounts of their experiences in New York parts of Canada Massachusetts New Jersey Virginia and North Carolina including their views on slavery and the rights of women. In their preface they state-- "What! we book pedlerssic write a book Who ever heard the like! We writers Ah! we fear our friends in their fondness are too hopeful when they urge us to publish a book.
