Amundsen Roald
My Life As An Explorer
Garden City NY: Doubleday Page & Co. 1927. In original blue cloth binding with minimal library identifiers and from the collection of John Pearson former member and one-time president of the Rowfant Club of Cleveland; Signed by the celebrated explorer and author for the Museum of The Peaceful Arts Manhattan which in 1927 was located in the old Scientific American Building. The Museum of the Peaceful Arts later became the Museum of Science and Industry. This is Amundsen's last book and signed copies are extremely hard to find. Born in Borge Ostfold Norway Roald Amundsen is said by many to be the greatest Polar explorer of the 20th century. In 1911 Roald Amundsen and his men were the first humans to reach the South Pole. A 1925 flight over the North Pole nearly met with disaster but Amundsen prevailed. He and his men returned safely in their Dornier Do J Flying Boat N-25 after being on the ice for over three weeks. In 1926 Amundsen made a historic flight over the Arctic aboard the Norweigan airship Norge becoming the first undisputed explorer to reach the North Pole. The previous claims of Cook Peary and Byrd as being the first are all in dispute. On June 18 1928 Amundsen flying with a rescue party searching for the Italian airship Italia crashed somewhere over the Barents Sea. Amundsen and his aircraft have never been found. As recently as 2009 the Royal Norweigan Navy unsuccessfully searched for the wreckage using an unmanned submarine Hugin 1000. This former Museum of Peaceful Arts library copy is thusly marked in a few places including the call numbers on the spine and lacks its dust jacket; The boards are lightly shelf worn spine extremities and corners worn and/or bumped. Inscribed & Signed by Author. First American Edition. Blue Cloth w/Gilt Titling. Very Good. 8vo - Over 7 3/4" -9 3/4 " Tall. Ex-Library Hard Cover. Doubleday, Page & Co. Hardcover
