‎TEO GRÜNBERG, (1927-).‎

‎Language, logic, and empirical knowledge: Collected papers, 1965-2005.‎

‎New English Paperback. Cr. 8vo. (20 x 14 cm). In English. 196 p. Language, logic, and empirical knowledge: Collected papers, 1965-2005. This collection consists of sixteen articles written in English by Teo Grünberg, who is one of the most distinguished logicians and analytic philosophers in Turkey. The basic motivation that lies behind the idea of putting these articles together in a separate volume is the utmost difficulty of access to many of the periodicals in which the articles are published, primarily because of the reason that their electronic versions are not available.‎

‎COLMAR VON DER GOLTZ, (1843-1916).‎

‎Millet-i müselleha (Ordu millet). Translated and prep. by Ismet Saribal.‎

‎New English Paperback. Pbo. Roy. 8vo. (24 x 17 cm). In Turkish. 455 p. Millet-i müselleha (Ordu millet). Translated and prep. by Ismet Saribal. Wilhelm Leopold Colmar von der Goltz, also known as Goltz Pasha, was a Prussian Field Marshal and military writer. After defeat in the Russo-Turkish War (1877-1878), Sultan Hamid, Sultan of the Ottoman Empire, asked for German aid in reorganizing the Ottoman Army, so that they would be able to resist the advance of the Russian Empire. Baron von der Goltz was sent. He spent twelve years on this work which provided the material for several of his books. During his time in the Ottoman Empire, Goltz had very negative view of Abdul Hamid II, writing: "The Stambul Efendi, whose father held a well-paid sinecure, reward by Sultan Hamid for his faithfulness, and who enjoyed to the fullest the good life, now knowing the struggle for existence, could not be a great leader on the battlefield. As long as Sultan Abdulhamid and the present ruling classes remain at the rudder, one may not speak of the rescue of Turkey." Goltz achieved some reforms such as lengthening the period of study at military schools and adding new curricula for staff courses at the War College. From 1883 to 1895, Goltz trained the so-called "Goltz generation" of Ottoman officers, many of whom would go to play prominent roles in Ottoman military and political life. Goltz, who learned to speak fluent Turkish, was a much admired teacher, regarded as a "father figure" by the cadets, who saw him as "an inspiration." Attending his lectures, in which he sought to indoctrinate his students with his "nation in arms" philosophy, was seen as "a matter of pride and joy" by his pupils. As a result, it was the Ottoman army rather the German army which first embraced Goltz's "nation in arms" theory as the basis of its understanding of war. After some years he was given the title Pasha (a signal honor for a non-Muslim) and in 1895, just before he returned to Germany, he was named Mushir (field-marshal). His improvements to the Ottoman army were significant. It is noteworthy that in the Greco-Turkish War (1897), the Turkish army stopped just before Thermopylae, only when the Czar Nicholas II of Russia threatened the Ottoman Sultan that he would be attacking the Ottoman Empire from eastern Anatolia unless the Ottoman Army stopped their campaign at that point.‎

‎The event of a thread: Global narratives in textiles.= Iplikten çözülmeler: Tekstilde küresel anlatilar. [Exhibition catalogue].‎

‎New English Paperback. 4to. (28 x 24 cm). In English and Turkish. 236 p., color ills. The event of a thread: Global narratives in textiles.= Iplikten çözülmeler: Tekstilde küresel anlatilar. [Exhibition catalogue]. 'The Event of a Thread' brings together 25 international contemporary artists, who use textile to create aesthetic and cultural narratives through objects, installations and video works. The title of the exhibition is a quotation from On Weaving (1965), the reference book by Anni Albers, one of the most important artists from the Bauhaus textile workshops. Albers believed that socio-cultural and economic activities impacted textiles, and stated that 'Just as it is possible to go from any place to any other, so also, starting from a defined and specialized field, can one arrive at a realization of ever-extending relationships. Thus tangential subjects come into view.?' According to Albers, one could discover 'the event of a thread"' at the root of each development. In the exhibition, weaving threads are utilized as a metaphor, which facilitate the interaction of weaving styles, stories and production techniques from different cultures, and mediate the development of new connections between them. Organized in collaboration with the Institute for Foreign Cultural Relations (ifa, Institut für Auslandsbeziehungen), one of the oldest art institutions in Germany, the exhibition is curated by Susanne Weiss and Inka Gressel on the invitation of ifa and aims to build on the original selection by creating new connections in each institution the exhibition travels to, with the assistance of curators at each institution and the addition of new works from local artists. 'The Event of a Thread' brings together a variety of stories ranging from the tradition of quipu used by ancient Andean cultures in South America to the textile techniques from the indigenous people of Wichi in Argentine and from Bedri Rahmi Eyüboglu's revival and adoption of the long-forgotten tradition of yazma (originally used for hand-painted kerchief) to Burhan Dogançay's tapestries created at the Aubusson workshops. The exhibition focuses on the historical, social and cultural meanings of fabrics, investigates the various uses of textile as a tool of expression and brings together different artistic positions that interact with one another within the exhibition space.‎

‎[MEHMET] EMIN [HALID] ONAT, (1908-1961).‎

‎[MODERN TURKISH ARCHITECTURE] [Autograph letter signed Emin Onat].‎

‎Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) Original autograph handwritten letter by Mehmet Emin Onat. (30x21 cm). In Ottoman script. 2 p. Full. Letterhead of 'Teknik Üniversite Istanbul; Ev: Kadiköy'. It starts as 'Sevgili Lemancigim'. Emin Onat was a Turkish architect and former rector of Istanbul Technical University. Onat was born in Istanbul in 1908. He entered Istanbul Technical University in 1926. Then, he was sent to Zurich Technical University. Onat was one of the architects of Anitkabir, the mausoleum of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk. His architectural style was formed at ETH. Emin Onat learned to experiment, interpret and search for modernism from his teacher Otto R. Salvisberg, a well-known, experienced practicing architect. Despite getting under the Anitkabir's shadow, he has a unique architectural style. Onat's architectural talent blossomed at Zurich Technical University, where one of his fellow students was Otto Rudolf Salvisberg, who later went to become one of the best architects of his time. Onat completed his studies in Zurich and returned to Turkey in 1934. Within a year, he had become an assistant professor in the Department of Architecture at the School of Engineering. He held the post for a couple of years that were marked by strenuous relations with the other members of the faculty, owing to the novel methods of teaching Onat introduced. In 1944 Onat became the first dean of the newly established Faculty of Architecture at the Istanbul Technical University. Onat rose further into the echelons of the architectural world in 1946, when he was given an honorary membership of the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA). In 1951 he became the Rector of the Istanbul Technical University, a post he held for two years. The Hannover Technical University awarded him an honorary doctorate in 1956. In 1957 he returned to the university. His return lasted only three years as on 21 October 1960 he and 147 faculty members were ousted from the university. Onat designed several impressive buildings during his career. These include the Istanbul Theatre and Conservatory, Istanbul Palace of Justice (1949), Kavaklidere Cenap, Presidential Secretariat in Cankaya and the General Directorate of Security. Onat had a predilection for local architectural elements. He fused traditional designs into his own designs, striving to attain organic unity. Onat's other designs are the Istanbul Lounges, Uludag Sanatorium, Bursa Governor's Mansion and IBM Headquarters in Istanbul. (Source: Wikipedia). Rare.‎

‎COLMAR FREIHERR von der GOLTZ, (1843-1916).‎

‎[GOLTZ'S REFERENCE BOOK on 'THE BATTLES OF FORTRESSES' PRINTED for the OTTOMAN ARMY] Muharebât-i kila'. Translated by Farukî Sâmi [Pasha], (1861-1911).‎

‎Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) Original cloth bdg. with 'Tercüman Gazetesi Kitapligi' [i.e. Tercüman Newspaper Library] label on spine. Roy. 8vo. (24 x 16 cm). In Ottoman script. [8], 391 p., 5 numerous folded plates and plans. Some underlined sentences and notes by pencil. Goltz's reference book on "battles of fortresses" printed for the Ottoman military schools. Muharebât-i kila'. Translated by Farukî Sâmi [Pasha], (1861-1911). Wilhelm Leopold Colmar Freiherr von der Goltz, also known as Goltz Pasha, was a Prussian Field Marshal and military writer. As long as Sultan Abdulhamid and the present ruling classes remain at the rudder, one may not speak of the rescue of Turkey.". Goltz achieved some reforms such as lengthening the period of study at military schools and adding new curricula for staff courses at the War College. From 1883 to 1895, Goltz trained the so-called "Goltz generation" of Ottoman officers, many of whom would go to play prominent roles in Ottoman military and political life. Goltz, who learned to speak fluent Turkish, was a much admired teacher, regarded as a "father figure" by the cadets, who saw him as "an inspiration.". Attending his lectures, in which he sought to indoctrinate his students with his "nation in arms" philosophy, was seen as "a matter of pride and joy" by his pupils. It is noteworthy that in the Greco-Turkish War (1897), the Turkish army stopped just before Thermopylae, only when the Czar Nicholas II of Russia threatened the Ottoman Sultan that he would be attacking the Ottoman Empire from eastern Anatolia unless the Ottoman Army stopped their campaign at that point. On his return to Germany in 1895 Goltz became a lieutenant-general and commander of the 5th Division, and in 1898, head of the Engineer and Pioneer Corps and Inspector-General of Fortifications. In 1900 he was made General of Infantry and in 1902 commander of the I. Army Corps. After returning to Germany in 1895, Goltz was in close contact with his students, and offered them his advice. [.] Soon afterward Goltz gave up that position and became a military aide to the essentially powerless Sultan Mehmed V. Baron von der Goltz did not get along with the head of the German mission to Turkey, [.] Sami Pasha al-Faruqi, (1861-1911), was an Ottoman / Turkish soldier, bureaucrat and governor. The Ottoman governor who played an important role in suppressing the Karak Uprising, which was an uprising against Ottoman authority in the Transjordanian town of Al-Karak, which erupted on 4 December 1910. The revolt came after Sami Pasha, the governor of Damascus, wanted to apply the same measures of conscription, taxation, and disarmament to the inhabitants of Al-Karak that previously provoked the Hauran Druze Rebellion. ‎Mûcîdi (Composed by) GUISEPPE DONIZETTI [PACHA], (1788-1856).‎

‎[FATHER of the MODERN MUSIC and MUSIKA-YI HUMÂYÛN / FIRST ANTHEM of the OTTOMAN EMPIRE in the WESTERN STYLE] [SHEET MUSIC] Marche Imperiale Ottomane.= Devlet-i Âliyye-i Osmaniyye marsi. Arrangee pour piano par G[iovanni] Avolio, (1849-1936).‎

‎Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) Paperback. Folio. (33 x24cm). In Ottoman script and French. [3], [1] p. Ottoman stamped in period. The Ottoman Empire used anthems since its foundation in the late 13th century, but did not use a specific imperial or national anthem until the 19th century. During the reign of Mahmud II, when the military and imperial band were re-organized along Western lines, Giuseppe Donizetti was invited to head the process. Donizetti Pasha, as he was known in the Ottoman Empire, composed the first Western-style imperial anthem, the Mahmudiye Marsi. Like in many other monarchies of its time, the anthem of the Ottoman Empire was an imperial anthem, not a national one. Hence it paid homage to a specific ruler and a new anthem was composed at each imperial succession. However, in 1844, with the Tanzimat reforms, the Mecidiye Marsi was recognized as the first official Ottoman national anthem. The first official Ottoman national flag (which was in essence identical to the present-day Turkish flag) was also adopted in 1844. Giuseppe Donizetti was an Italian musician. From 1828 he was Instructor General of the Imperial Ottoman Music at the court of Sultan Mahmud II (1808-39). His younger brother was the famous opera composer Gaetano Donizetti. He studied music first with his uncle, Carini Donizetti, and, later, he was a pupil of Simone Mayr. After enlisting in Napoleon's army (1808), he served there as band leader. He took part in the campaigns against Austria and in Spain, and followed Napoleon to Elba. He was present at the Battle of Waterloo. After the fall of Napoleon, he continued his career as a bandmaster in the Savoy army. Giuseppe Donizetti Pasha, as he was called in the Ottoman Empire, played a significant role in the introduction of European music to the Ottoman military. Apart from overseeing the training of the European-style military bands of Mahmud's modern army, he taught music at the palace to the members of the Ottoman royal family, the princes and the ladies of the harem, is believed to have composed the first national anthem of the Ottoman Empire, supported the annual Italian opera season in Pera, organised concerts and operatic performances at court, and played host to a number of eminent virtuosi who visited Istanbul at the time, such as Franz Liszt, Parish Alvars and Leopold de Meyer. Although the elder Donizetti was born in Bergamo, Italy, Constantinople became a second home for him, and he lived there until his death in 1856. He is buried in the vaults of the St. Esprit Cathedral, near the Beyoglu district of Istanbul, in Pera. Giovanni Avolio, (1849-1936) was an Italian conductor and composer. According to the sheet musical paper, this first anthem was composed in 1831 by Donizetti and arranged by Avolio into piano in 1918. J. D. Andria is one of the best known music publishers among the Ottoman Empire mionrities. According to he documents in hand, it can be estimated that he began musical score publication in the year of 1904. Andria dealt with music publication at the address of Beyoglu, Istiklal Street (Near Agha Mosque) at 68 no. Andria also published four pieces of Turkish marche parties for piano as far as we know; besides his big sized west music works, which were published in general by him. Donizetti's 'Marche' is one of them as well besides Halit Recep Arman's, Miilok's, and Orente's ones. It is known when publishing life of Andria ended. ‎Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) Original color map. Elephant folio. (59x75 cm). In Ottoman script. [OTTOMAN MILITARY MAP of PATAGONIA and FALKLAND ISLANDS: ROUTE of DRESDEN] Alman kruvazörü Dresden'in takîbi ve tahrîbi. SMS Dresden cruiser's routes between 1913-1915 (World War 1) on the Patagonian shelf; western shores of South America, Patagonia and Falkland Islands. Dresden spent much of her career overseas. After commissioning, she visited the United States in 1909 during the Hudson-Fulton Celebration, before returning to Germany to serve in the reconnaissance force of the High Seas Fleet for three years. In 1913, she was assigned to the Mediterranean Division. She was then sent to the Caribbean to protect German nationals during the Mexican Revolution. In mid-1914, she carried the former dictator Victoriano Huerta to Jamaica, where the British had granted him asylum. She was due to return to Germany in July 1914, but was prevented by the outbreak of World War I from doing so. At the onset of hostilities, Dresden operated as a commerce raider in South American waters in the Atlantic, then moved to the Pacific Ocean in September and joined Maximilian von Spee's East Asia Squadron. Dresden saw action in the Battle of Coronel in November, where she engaged the British cruiser HMS Glasgow, and at the Battle of the Falkland Islands in December, where she was the only German warship to escape destruction. She eluded her British pursuers for several more months, until she put into Robinson Crusoe Island in March 1915. Her engines were worn out and she had almost no coal left for her boilers, so the ship's captain contacted the local Chilean authorities to have Dresden interned. She was trapped by British cruisers, including her old opponent Glasgow. The British violated Chilean neutrality and opened fire on the ship in the Battle of Más a Tierra. The Germans scuttled Dresden and the majority of the crew escaped to be interned in Chile for the duration of the war. The wreck remains in the harbor; several artifacts, including her bell and compass, have been returned to Germany.‎

‎PAUL LANGE BEY, (German musician, teacher, orchestra and choir leader living and working in Istanbul), (1857-1919).‎

‎[SHEET MUSIC - ANTHEM OF BARBAROS HAYREDDIN] Haireddin Barbarousse.= Barbaros Hayreddin marsi.‎

‎Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) Paperback. Folio. (33 x 24 cm). In Ottoman script (Turkish with Arabic letters), and bilingual text in French and Ottoman Turkish on the cover. [4] p. Paul Lange was a German musician, teacher, orchestra, and choir leader living and working in Istanbul. Lange "Europeanized" Turkish military music and was one of the pioneers to bring German and European classical music to the Ottoman capital in the years between 1880 and 1920. Lange was born in Kartzow, Prussia, the descendant of an old Prussian teacher family. He was trained at the teacher's college in Neuruppin to become a school teacher. He graduated from that college in 1879 with honors. Because of his high musical skills, he was then admitted to the "Royal Academic Institute for Church Music" in Berlin, where he received training as a church organist. In 1880, Lange moved to Constantinople, where he assumed a position as a music teacher at the German School (Alman Lisesi) as well as organist of the Chapel of the German Embassy. Subsequently, Lange also became a music teacher at various other institutes of higher education in Constantinople, including several Greek and Armenian high schools (lycées) as well as American colleges such as Robert College and American College for Girls. Lange became a successful piano teacher and subsequently also formed his private conservatory, which however had to declare bankruptcy after two years. He transformed an existing Italian orchestra into a large German-style symphony orchestra with which he conducted the first performances ever of Beethoven symphonies and Wagner operas in the Ottoman Empire, with enormous success. Finally, during his visit to Constantinople in 1898, Kaiser Wilhelm II, who had already appointed him a "Kaiserlicher Musikdirektor" in 1894, became aware of Lange and helped him gain a position as head of a naval military orchestra of the Ottoman Navy. Subsequently, he took over several other military ensembles, before finally being appointed Director of the Sultan's music after the revolution in 1908. Since then Lange carried the Ottoman Court title "Bey". As a member of the Ottoman court, Lange was allowed to stay in Istanbul by the Allied Military Administration when all other Germans and Austrians were deported from the city. When Lange died in Üsküdar, Ottoman Empire, in December 1919, he received a state funeral, and the British Embassy chaplain performed the funeral at Feriköy Protestant Cemetery. However, his widow and his youngest daughter, who had stayed with him in Istanbul, were deported to Germany only a few months later in May 1920. The German-American conductor Hans Lange (assistant of Arturo Toscanini in New York City, later conductor at the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, best known for numerous recordings with the Wagner soprano Kirsten Flagstad) was the oldest son of Paul Lange. Paul Lange was a close friend of fellow German lecturer, Dr. Friedrich Schrader, also a faculty member at Robert College in the 1890s.‎
